Investing in Chanel

Is this a good idea given how ridiculously the prices are rising, sometimes two rises per year.
A classic flap massively over delivers in return on price.
The idea would be to use it on special occasions and clean and keep perfect in between - and then sell it when I am 65 or so.
I'd have to sell this idea to DH - we have other investments and pensions etc that dh pays into every year. He is very good with finances and is planning for future. I need to convince him to divert some money away from his normal investments or even relocate some.
Is this utter madness? I have smal pt jobs occasionally but it would take me 5 years to save for one of these on my own

As with any investment you need to research carefully.

Not all Chanels are equal. Personally I would expect a bag that is used to hold value but not increase.

(I don't have any but love watching Super Dacob https://youtube.com/user/WatchSuperDacob )

LivingLaVidaBabyShower · 01/11/2021 22:15

So I actually made a fair bit of cash on chanel.

There was high demand and shortage on minis in particular both 20cm and 17cm a while back... i want to sayyyy 17/18
The le boys were mad popular too.

I had a good relationship with an SA they used to whats app me when stuff came in as I built a relationship with them and used to buy A LOT
i would resell the minis immediately in brand new condition at approx £700-£900 over retail.
Le boys at about a £500 mark up
(Like teslas people will pay to jump the queue)

I did it for about 18 months and ultimately resold in order to buy a chanel mini, WOC and jumbo outright/ free.

If you want to see 3x on your £££ get into crypto and buy some tech ETFs or FAANG

Crypto and google/fb shares are how we are funding our ground floor renovation/kitchen extension in cash next year!!!

CinnamonJellyBeans · 01/11/2021 22:15

I was quite intrigued by the thread title. "Investment" makes me think bank vaults, diamonds so big they have names, gold mines, future works of art

A bag? Is that it? Is that what we call an "investment" nowadays?

We must all be investors. I may as well call my sofa an investment.

Mermaidwaves · 01/11/2021 22:28

This thread is fascinating, I feel like an alien following it! Grin I have no idea what half of this all means, but surely if Chanel didn't exist any more in 10 years that would make the bags more valuable as you can't buy them anymore? Forgive me if I'm being naive or totally clueless!

WhatAShilohPitt · 01/11/2021 22:37

If you want an investment bag, get a Hermes one. I think the general idea of buying a bag that you’ll deliberately barely use or enjoy in the hope that you can charge someone else more money for it years from now is bizarre. Why not buy something you can actually enjoy all the time, like art or a watch?

blueshoes · 01/11/2021 22:40

He would like to see something triple in value in 3 years to outperform our current investments.

This is an insane statement.

You might get it on the odd investment but most investments don't give this level of returns and the risks taken to obtain it mean you are more likely to lose capital than have consistent returns. Even Warren Buffet does not make these returns and he made made spectacular misfires over the years.

The poster who implied your dh is running is a pyramid scheme if he is getting these returns is spot on.

Animood · 01/11/2021 22:42

I think it's defo OK to invest in things for fun and just to see what happens. Might be one of those fun things!

However, I'd only invest in a fun thing if I had lots of other sensible investments, good pension, was already a home owner and paying extra on the mortgage.

So whether this is an ok idea mostly depends on your overall financial situation.

ManifestingWisdom · 01/11/2021 22:48

The Channel Flap never goes down in price.

Would you be able to sell it though?!

ManifestingWisdom · 01/11/2021 22:49

The Gucci Jackie is a good classic bag that will hold its value.

ManifestingWisdom · 01/11/2021 22:50

Sorry, I know you weren't asking for suggestions. Just not a fan of the channel flap/or 1955. You can't fit anything in it.

BeardyButton · 01/11/2021 22:52

I think this is the most ridiculous thread I ve read on here. And I ve read a lot of ridiculous threads on here.
@PuttingOutFires it says in the OP what she means, a classic flap.
I thought 'flap' was a typo ......

Thefartingsofaofdenmarkstreet · 01/11/2021 22:53

I would totally love a Chanel bag but, apart from the fact I could never afford it, I was also horrified when I found out that they apparently burn their end of season stock to stop it from making its way into the the (shock horror) 'sales'.

This is what I wanted to hear. I wish I had got started sooner because in about 2008/9 I had so much spare cash and no kids and the bags were about 300% cheaper!

Yes, but what the fuck is a classic flap for those of us who are uninitiated into the world of overpriced fashion?

wallowmall · 01/11/2021 23:02

@Thefartingsofaofdenmarkstreet they defo have sales

TooBigForMyBoots · 01/11/2021 23:06

A handbag?ShockHmm

Sorry, I came over all Lady Bracknell there.

Hawkins001 · 01/11/2021 23:15

All the best op

RockingAmadeus · 01/11/2021 23:17

@wallowmall really, I was certain that Chanel never had sales. I’ve heard of sample sales but thought that was clothes and shoes, never handbags/leather goods.

LizzieMacQueen · 01/11/2021 23:22

A good second hand would grow in value too - I'd look into getting one of those instead.

Hoolihan · 01/11/2021 23:29

Why have so many people commented on this thread just to declare that they don't know what it's about? Who cares??

Twiggywinkle13 · 01/11/2021 23:33

If your husband was really tripling his investment in 3 years, I’m sure you’d have multiple classic flaps.

They’re a great investment, they’ll never go out of fashion but then definitely won’t triple their price in three years Hmm

hawtpot · 01/11/2021 23:40

Chanel have sales !???
