To think a 95 year-old woman slowing down is not that shocking?

Regardless of whether you are in favour of a royal family or not… is it really a shocker, or a crisis, that a 95 year-old woman is slowing down somewhat and missing engagements?

I personally am in favour of the royal family, and I hope nothing is seriously wrong with the Queen. But it’s not like she hasn’t been seen in months and there’s some great conspiracy to keep the reason a secret. She’s had one night in hospital and missed one engagement. She’s 95. Someone not having a few health problems at that age is a news story!

I know people are interested in royal stories, but realistically, ‘old woman not as young as she used to be’ isn’t news. For at least 25 years now, it’s been made clear the Queen won’t abdicate, but will hand over more responsibilities to Charles and, increasingly, William. Unless something major or out of ordinary happens, we don’t need a running commentary.

@SilverBirchWithout

Personally I’m feeling a tad guilty. A few weeks ago I was at a village meeting where a few people were frothing about making plans for next year’s jubilee. I made an unfortunate comment about it being a risk to plan so early as she was no spring chicken ...
I wouldn't feel too guilty, I'm sure many have said/ thought the same.

I've certainly heard it being brought up in discussions.

RoseRedRoseBlue · 27/10/2021 01:56

It will be very telling if she doesn’t attend Remembrance Sunday wreath laying in a couple of weeks time.

PurpleFlower1983 · 27/10/2021 01:58

I hope she makes it to her platinum jubilee. It would be an unfortunately fitting end to the crap last couple of years should we lose the Queen at this stage. No matter what your beliefs she has served the country dutifully her whole life and absolutely since she was 25. I think the Charles/Camilla/William monarchy will be something very different really. It’s sad.

DockOTheBay · 27/10/2021 02:04

But no its not odd for a 95 year old to be slowing down. Afertall most 95 year olds are dead.
True, don't get much slower than that.

My gran is 97. She walks herself up to the bingo a few times a week, goes to asda once a week and looks after her home. Pre covid she went on coach holidays and cruises with friends. I would say she's doing very well for her age, but I can't imagine her being able to go to long days which involve a lot of standing around, meeting many people, travelling long distances by plane etc.

Surely they'll have to go ahead with the extra long weekend regardless now, people will have already booked holidays etc
Nat6999 · 27/10/2021 02:15

If the Queen dies before her Platinum Jubilee next year the weekend could end up being Prince Charles Coronation if there is time from the Queen passing. How long does it take to plan a coronation? I presume that like the Queen's funeral it is already planned on paper, the only thing would be around Covid, would we still have world leaders & royalty from around the world be allowed to attend.

PyongyangKipperbang · 27/10/2021 02:47

She is the oldest and longest serving monarch the UK has ever had.....as a republican and antimonarchist, even I am sickened by some of the comments on this thread.

I wonder what the comments would be if it was your mother/grandmother/great grandmother. Whatever she may be officially, she is a woman with a family.

It's pretty obvious she wouldn't entertain the thought of finding love again, and one of her children is facing legal action for things that would make any parent feel ashamed.

All she's ever known is a life of public service. I am wholly unsurprised at her attempting to fill of her remaining days with serving the country in the only way she knows.

What else is she going to do? Stay at home and have enough time to be with her overwhelming thoughts of grief at losing her husband or her sadness at having raised a child she thought shared her values and apparently doesn't?

I'd want to keep busy too.

Whether or not you like the Royal Family in general, I think it's pretty hard to deny that the Queen hasn't given her all to this country. You don't get to 95 putting other people's needs above your own and suddenly feeling able to stop.

I might not have a lot of time for all of her relatives, but I think the Queen is an amazing lady. She's also a person - yes, she's a person of public interest, but she should also be afforded a shred of privacy/dignity in her old age. Bloody hell, most of us won't even make it to 95 - if she doesn't want every single hospital visit reported, give her that.

Pixxie7 · 27/10/2021 04:30

I think it’s a smoke screen to cover the incompetence of the government who has lied and manipulated since they came to power. You may not be interested but many are, she is just as entitled to confidentiality as everyone else.
It is no wonder that she is unwell given what her family are putting her through.

heebiejeebies45 · 27/10/2021 04:42

I've seen quite a few threads about this. I really never knew people cared so much about the Queen/Royal Family

generalh · 27/10/2021 04:48

@greyinganddecaying

I'm another who wouldn't be surprised if she lasts less than a year without PP.

Wonder if we'll still get our extra bank holiday next year if she doesn't make it until then?

In my LA schools had their BH on Sept 1st so we went back after the summer a day later.
EmmaGrundyForPM · 27/10/2021 04:55

I am.not a royalist, but appreciate that the Queen has dedicated her life to public service.

I can't understand why she hadn't cut down her engagements to a mere handful and let Charles/ William step up more. However, it is her choice.

I do think it's distasteful to speculate on anyones death though. Some of the comments on here are dreadful.

WhereWeAreNow · 27/10/2021 05:03

Germans work hard alright

Pantsomime · 27/10/2021 05:21

Some of the comments here make me think we have lost all sense of humanity and its deeply worrying for all our futures. The Queen has served the country tirelessly and I wish her well

derxa · 27/10/2021 05:40

Appalling comments

something2say · 27/10/2021 06:02

May God bless her. Itll be a sad day when she goes. And I believe she deserves privacy, but she is of great interest to people.

Wordsmith · 27/10/2021 06:12

My mum is 89, in good health and lives alone, but has been slowing down quite rapidly over the last few years. It's a natural effect of ageing and it does accelerate the older you get. Walking is tiring, meeting people is tiring, doing stuff is tiring. It doesn't mean she's on her way out, it just means she's getting old.

The Queen is 95 FGS. Travelling hundreds of miles to a glittering reception where she has to stand for a long time, greet a lot of people and perhaps make a speech is asking a lot of anyone that age, Queen or not.

mellongoose · 27/10/2021 06:20

She is still doing her boxes and meeting the PM once a week. Therefore she is still carrying out her Head of State duties.

Rosiiiiie · 27/10/2021 06:29

If she was actually close to dying, why would Will and Kate have gone for a midterm break? And why isn’t Harry heading back to UK?

Cadent · 27/10/2021 06:32

we don’t need a running commentary.

Yes, so why this pointless thread, OP?

No has said the Queen shouldn’t slow down and the media will always report on her health, as many people are interested.

ItWasPeculiarButBearable · 27/10/2021 06:38

She’s obviously got Covid, which is why she’s up to doing video appointments but isn’t allowed to meet anyone in person. No?

Aposterhasnoname · 27/10/2021 06:44

@WhereWeAreNow

Fuck me that’s some xenophobic shit right there. I guess you’re one of these twats that think anyone with heritage from outside the uk can’t possibly be British, and shriek about “sending them back” every time someone that doesn’t meet your idea of being British commits a crime.
DoctorSnortles · 27/10/2021 06:49

Unpleasant comments on this thread. I suppose it's the way of the world now - glib nastiness being all the rage.

I think it's horrible.

Sorrynotsorry2 · 27/10/2021 06:55

I assume shes waiting for the jubilee next year .. She will definitely be the longest reining monarch in history for many years to come . Shes done well to last this long .
