To ask how the fuck you iron your king size duvet covers?

And fitted sheets?

I recently lost my grandmother and I have decided that I need to bloody well up my standards a bit - she had very high standards, and she's right!

I'm quite good at ironing generally, even work shirts but I just can't work out how to iron a massive duvet cover without it taking hours/being bloody difficult

@RachelHasThoseInBurgundy

Fold them in half and iron one side then flip and do the other.

With fitted sheets you fold in half matching the corner seems and hook the corner over the end of the board, iron that section, flip over and hook the other corner, iron that section, then hook a corner so you have the top edge section on the board, iron, then pull the sheet towards you and iron a section at a time.

I iron for a living and this is how I get perfect results.

This poster is a pro!

My mum taught me how to roller press a lifetime ago – our neighbour had on and we'd occasionally pop over to press linen (usually table cloths).

Personally, I find the trick is to not leave things in the dryer too long after the dryer is done. Also, buy textured duvet cover so you can't tell if they are wrinkly.

babybunny123 · 25/10/2021 15:45

i iron them when they are on the bed and the pillow cases its so much easier.

RachelHasThoseInBurgundy · 25/10/2021 15:46

The answer is pay Rachel to do this!

I wholeheartedly agree! Grin

sweatervest · 25/10/2021 15:46

i iron it loosely (don't see my youtube channel as i haven't got one) and then iron it folded in half. so doubled so to speak. (describing ironing isn't my strong point).

i love ironed sheets.
i remeber an interview madonna did years ago and she said she has clean sheets every day apart from sunday when the housekeeper had a day off. (or words to that effect). and i thought "oooooh. i wish i was madonna/someone similar"
ironing water is the new hash tag, as they don't say.

Blueuggboots · 25/10/2021 15:47

Iron duvet covers and sheets that are going to get creased while you're asleep?! No.

RachelHasThoseInBurgundy · 25/10/2021 15:47
@RachelHasThoseInBurgundy you're not in York by any chance?!
Sorry! Not even close.

MilduraS · 25/10/2021 15:48

I don't iron my own sheets but in the guest room I'll iron the sheet once it's on the bed. I also do a quick iron over the duvet while it's on the bed. The sheet looks perfectly ironed, the duvet is more of a quick once over to get rid of big creases. Generally it's fresh out of the tumble dryer just before they arrive so aren't too bad anyways

Mercurial123 · 25/10/2021 15:48

I iron my clothes but refuse to do bedding. I line dry and my cotton duvet covers rarely have creases.

YouJustFoldItIn · 25/10/2021 15:48

At various stages in my life I have either:

Sent them out to an ironing service

Thrown them over a tall clothes hanging rail and steamed them then left them to air.

Ironed them the hard way (you need a very clean floor)

Not given a fuck and put them on the bed as they are. After a night or two you can't tell the difference anyway.

Mercurial123 · 25/10/2021 15:49

A hand held steamer would be easier and just steam on the bed.

Coffeeonmytoffee · 25/10/2021 15:49

Fold it and then iron it. So I fold it long ways and just iron. It comes out well with very little effort. With fitted sheets I do the same. Harder to get to look ok but not impossible. They're never perfect.

JudgeJ · 25/10/2021 15:50

@Noorandapples

I think some people iron it on the bed, I don't iron though, nobody sees my bed!
I do that with fitted sheets, put them on the bed very slightly damp and iron with a very hot setting, perfect. I also iron duvet covers by folding and moving around, it's not rocket science!
SpeckledlyHen · 25/10/2021 15:51

@myheartskippedabeat

Ironing bedding? Sorry life is far too short

You've clearly got way too much time in your hands if your worried about this nonsense!!!

Just rude and unhelpful. Why even comment. I bet there are things you do in your life that someone else would think was a complete waste of time and consider you to have too much time on your hands also..
AuntyMabelandPippin · 25/10/2021 15:51

I do the bottom half of the duvet, then turn it around and do the top half.

I only iron one side as I've a steamer iron that goes right through.

I love my sheets all freshly washed and ironed.

H1Drangea · 25/10/2021 15:53

I run a BnB , so feel obliged to iron bedding as people are paying for the privilege of sleeping under it
I dry duvet covers hanging from the banister ( we have a galley type landing - sounds grand , but it isn’t ) folded lengthways in four , long part hanging down
Then , I iron one side , turn it over and iron the other side
The 2 sides in the middle don’t actually get ironed , but still come out nice and flat
The trick is to fold them neatly when they come out of the washing machine ( and I do have one of the flat press irons that you sit down at , permanently set up ready to go )

StupidPhones · 25/10/2021 15:53

Op did your grandmother have any other high standards you aspire to?
My ironing advice is non existent.

RaginaPhalange · 25/10/2021 15:54

I only iron my kids uniform, fuck ironing anything else. Each to their own.

isthismylifenow · 25/10/2021 15:58

My bedding is always ironed. Another small joy of being single is not having to share my bed which now always has white cotton bedding on it.

I did have a steam press which I used to iron use. Now I pay someone to do it. Win win in my opinion.

I love my bedroom. It's my happy place after many years of it not being so. It's the small things, and for me, this is one of them.

Londonnight · 25/10/2021 15:58

I have never ironed bedding -- there really is no point. I iron very little, most things nowadays just don't need to be ironed. Life is far too short to be worrying about it.

CounsellorTroi · 25/10/2021 15:58

I don’t, what is the point?

ElephantOfRisk · 25/10/2021 15:58

I have 100% cotton ones OP but they are intentionally not meant to look completely smooth. However, I do hang mine over the bannister to dry to they are pretty much bed worthy, but the bannister isn't long enough so they get a crumpled line in the middle. So, I tend to just iron the edges and the line up the middle as it takes ages otherwise.

I like stuff to be ironed generally as it feels so much nicer on your skin.

I rarely ever use the tumble dryer and allergies mean we don't use fabric softener either.

FatOaf · 25/10/2021 15:58

I just live with the fact that it takes a long time. I watch movies while I'm ironing, so I don't particularly mind how long it takes.

I don't take a lot of time over fitted sheets, as they get stretched when you put them back on the mattress: I iron the middle and reasonably close to the edges but I don't bother with the corners.

StupidPhones · 25/10/2021 15:59

Itsmylifenow that's lovely.

Tumbleweed101 · 25/10/2021 15:59

I don't iron mine because I simply don't have time but I do like the look of ironed bedding, especially good quality sheets. I think there are ways you can fold and iron in sections.

BigButtons · 25/10/2021 15:59

I don't iron anything anymore. Just the occasional shirt as and when it needs doing. I don't even have an ironing board. My clothes aren't wrinkled and as for bedsheets? Why would you iron them? Any creases will come out with body heat and you can't see the sheets anyway.
