To ask how the fuck you iron your king size duvet covers?

And fitted sheets?

I recently lost my grandmother and I have decided that I need to bloody well up my standards a bit - she had very high standards, and she's right!

I'm quite good at ironing generally, even work shirts but I just can't work out how to iron a massive duvet cover without it taking hours/being bloody difficult

OP posts:
waferingstranger · 25/10/2021 16:01

I dont iron my sheets for anyone, I do it for me because thats what I like. And if I'm listening to a dj streaming music for 3hrs I can double up and iron my clothes and sheets at the same time

Some people like to sit and watch TV for hours....so what. I dont care what other people do with their time, thats up to them I don't judge them for it

Op came on here looking for some advice as opposed to being judged for how she spends her time

Obviously some people do it for genuine enjoyment, in which case fine. Obviously that's a little unusual, but each to their own.

Most people, though, do it because they feel they need to do so due to societal pressures, which OP herself implied was the case for her by talking about having standards and judging people who don't iron their clothes. So it was that perspective to which I was expressing confusion, given that very few people go looking inside other peoples' bedrooms.

Lynne1Cat · 25/10/2021 16:03

I don't iron any bedding - they're going to get creased anyway - I think there's enough ironing to do without that as well.

MahMahMahMahCorona · 25/10/2021 16:05

@underneaththeash

I put it in a bag, outside my door. The bag disappears for a day abs then everything inside comes back ironed and folded. I’d try it…,

This is amazing. Do you think it would work if I did the same?? Are there ironing fairies out there?

waferingstranger · 25/10/2021 16:05

It's like people who iron pants. I'm sure some people do, and if that's a genuine hobby then ok! Weird but ok!

But if they're doing it because they think they're supposed to then.. Why??

PrimeraVez · 25/10/2021 16:06

We have an Emperor size bed, DD has a Super King and both DS’s have a King.

The secret is sending them out to be ironed by someone else!

limitedperiodonly · 25/10/2021 16:06

@RachelHasThoseInBurgundy. Thanks. I do a similar thing but I'm probably not as fast as you.

These threads are not for people who don't have an iron, think you can't tell the difference between tumble-dried or say "life is too short."

  1. That's okay; 2. People can; 3. Best get back to your busy life rather than wasting it on ironing threads.
dottiedodah · 25/10/2021 16:07

Dont forget in Grandmas day ,most sheets would be white and ironed .Just how it was then .We do not have an Ironing Board at all here! Just dry as normal in TD .Put Duvet inside ,quick shake ,good to go!

Standrewsschool · 25/10/2021 16:07

I fold them in half or quarters to iron them.

I used to have to iron the kids socks and pants when I was a nanny. I thought the mum was joking at first but it turns out that's fairly normal in France. It was a nice quick job though. Much easier than fighting a duvet.
Squiz81 · 25/10/2021 16:09

I used to iron mine (fold in half, iron, fold in half again, iron on treat until it’s folded drawer size)

I’ve since given up, half the bed is covered by a throw anyway. I just fold nicely now. Fitted sheets don’t need ironing as they are so stretched out on the bed.

Joystir59 · 25/10/2021 16:09

You don't iron your duvet covers unless for fussy guests.

trappedsincesundaymorn · 25/10/2021 16:10

What's this "iron" of which you all speak? Grin

StupidPhones · 25/10/2021 16:10

It's burny, keep away from it.

Rubyupbeat · 25/10/2021 16:11

I don't.
My friend irons on the bed.

shouldistop · 25/10/2021 16:11

I either tumble dry them and give them a good shake as soon as they come out. Or in spring / summer give them a good shake after washing and hang outside.
I've never once ironed bedding and I don't intend to start ever.

MatildaTheCat · 25/10/2021 16:11

@blink18two I iron my super king duvet covers.

  1. Wash using a slightly lower spin to reduce creasing.
  2. Two people to take each corner and fold in half pulling tight and lining up correctly.
  3. Dry over the back of 2-3 dining chairs. ( I tumble then fold)
  4. When still very slightly damp ( if possible) iron whilst still folded into four.
  5. Air then put away.

Takes less that 10 minutes in total and is bliss.

I “treated” myself to a King size bed last Autumn, and had to get all new bedding… Hmmm - love the bed and the extra (starfishing) space, but - changing the bed is a bloody nightmare!! I’m only tiny so wrestling with the quilt cover and fitted sheets is comically difficult. I daren’t even begin to try ironing them😂

DoctorSnortles · 25/10/2021 16:14

This.

People get very aggressive about ironing. I iron everything because I like to wear natural fabrics and they don’t look good unless pressed. I like ironed bedding. People who don’t seem to get all irate about it, as if it’s the most awful waste of time (as opposed to lying on the sofa watching Squid Games and eating Pringles.) A bit of time alone, quietly ironing clean-smelling clothes whilst listening to a podcast is not the very worst way to spend part of your evening.

Have you tried turning the duvet cover inside out? Turn it inside out, put your hands up the inside along the seams until you can grasp the inside corners. Still holding the corners, pinch hold of the top corners of your duvet. Give it all a shake and the duvet cover falls over the duvet. Give it a few more shakes and then just do up the bottom.

Loads easier.

Randomneim · 25/10/2021 16:19

Hang them outside immediately after the wash and the wind/gravity flapping them around helps: they're much less crinkled than they would be in the dryer. Get a laundry tarpaulin for bad weather days in winter, or save duvet washing day for non raining days.

Absolutely. This thread was always going to attract the people who gloat about not owning an iron (I know nobody in RL who doesn't own an iron)

I iron because I like things to be pristine, they fold away better in the drawers and I might as well iron and catch up podcasts than do other jobs (like cooking 😡😡😡)

I iron mine. I like it. I can do all the household sheets and covers in the space of two episodes of Silent Witness or similar. I like the peaceful activity to counteract the murderiness.

With fitted sheets, fold into four so that all the corners are nested. Iron along the flat edge, both sides, then tuck the ironing board into the corner and pull our the elastic so you get a smooth-ish surface. Iron back and forth toward the elastic so you don't iron creases in. Then quickly go over the flat bit, both sides. When you fold it, line up the edges and tuck all the elastic inside.

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 25/10/2021 16:24

If you Buy good quality linen or French linen and a beautiful throw, you will never need to iron bed linen again.

Terfydactyl · 25/10/2021 16:25

@SoupDragon

Out of curiosity, I ironed my bed linen once. It made zero difference to how it felt so I have never done it again. Life is too short!
I did this too. Sorta channelled my inner granny. Then went to bed in nice ironed sheets and wondered why when straight out of the dryer or off the washing line was the same. Decided the backbreaking labour wasnt worth it so never done it again, also lost the iron and never replaced it. FWIW I do have excellent high thread count bed linen that doesn't much crease.
