To ask how the fuck you iron your king size duvet covers?

And fitted sheets?

I recently lost my grandmother and I have decided that I need to bloody well up my standards a bit - she had very high standards, and she's right!

I'm quite good at ironing generally, even work shirts but I just can't work out how to iron a massive duvet cover without it taking hours/being bloody difficult

How do hotels do it? There must be a simple way, but I’ve never managed it. Please can someone who has changed hotel bed linen enlighten us?

Sillyotter · 25/10/2021 14:52

I don’t. Got better things to be doing with my time

RachelHasThoseInBurgundy · 25/10/2021 14:52

Doh! I forgot the pic!

@RachelHasThoseInBurgundy

Fold them in half and iron one side then flip and do the other.

With fitted sheets you fold in half matching the corner seems and hook the corner over the end of the board, iron that section, flip over and hook the other corner, iron that section, then hook a corner so you have the top edge section on the board, iron, then pull the sheet towards you and iron a section at a time.

I iron for a living and this is how I get perfect results.

This! Although I don't iron fitted sheets, just the duvet covers and pillowcases. One of my greatest pleasures is getting into a newly changed bed with ironed covers 😁.

ChiefAdjusterOfRubensShorts · 25/10/2021 14:52

Tumble dried and then put straight on the bed, sprayed with crease release and then rub the iron over it while it’s on the bed.

It’s not perfect but it beats standing trying to iron it on the ironing board!

Scirocco · 25/10/2021 14:53

I only iron them if I've guests coming who are particularly keen on such things being done "just so". Don't see the point personally, they get adequately flat from drying.

blink18two · 25/10/2021 14:53

@cardibach

How’s that aggressive *@blink18two*? No more aggressive than saying we should all have standards. Which you followed up with ‘at least I’ll have made the effort’ which is a massively passive aggressive dig at the (vast majority) saying they don’t iron.
That was not meant as a dig at all.

Sorry you took it that way.

I don't.

When my grandma died I realised I need to grab life with both hands the way she did so focused my attention on ticking things off my bucket list rather than housework.

chelle862 · 25/10/2021 14:53

The op has asked how people iron their sheets, not a chorus of I don't, why bother, waste of time 🙄

Everything in my house gets ironed, including the duvet cover, I fold it in half length ways and and do both sides, fold in half again and just keep going until it will fit into the draw. Nothing better than fresh ironed sheets!

steppemum · 25/10/2021 14:54

well, to answer the actual question.

fold them in half. Iron the facing side, turn over iron the back, refold so the inside is on the outside and repeat.

But in reality, dry in tumble dryer, or hanging up and then fold well.
I find that sheets that are properly smoothed and folded and then stacked in the cupboard iron themselves. Whe you get them out to use they are smooth. The secret is to not just fold them, but fold them and smooth them firmly with your hands.

Palavah · 25/10/2021 14:54

So, we're all different

supersop60 · 25/10/2021 14:54

I iron stuff, but not bedlinen. Life is too short.
I have standards btw and they extend to caring, politeness, consideration for other people, integrity, professionalism etc. Not having smooth duvet covers.

blink18two · 25/10/2021 14:55

I'm going to try the crease release

Yes - I fold and iron each side - and do the corner thing with fitted sheets - I just love freshly washed and ironed bedding - some times if I'm busy or under the weather I will just chuck the bedding back on but I have two sets so I tend to always have an ironed one ready - not anything to do with 'standards' I just like it.

blink18two · 25/10/2021 14:56

Sorry for any offence caused by my 'standards' comment.

Really wasn't meant like that.

Shodan · 25/10/2021 14:57

I always iron mine, in the way @RachelHasThoseInBurgundy describes.

I also iron my pillow slips, and my sheets. DP likes flat sheets, which he wrenches into place firmly, hospital-style.

But I do it because I like the feeling of crisp ironed bedlinen. It really doesn't take very long, and leaves plenty of time for other, apparently more 'worthy' pursuits.

StupidPhones · 25/10/2021 14:57

I agree with the smoothing.
Lots of shaking here too before they dry!

Artie30 · 25/10/2021 14:57

I don't 😅

I iron most of our clothing but I draw the line at ironing bedding!

MerryMarigold · 25/10/2021 14:57

I don't. They are creased after 5 mins of sleeping in/ on them.

DownToTheSeaAgain · 25/10/2021 14:57

@Monsterpumpkins

Ironing lady here!! Iron the right side.. Make a quarter turn. Iron the right side.. Make a quarter turn. Iron the right side. Make a quarter turn.. Iron. All done!! All done
This is how I do it.

Kim and Aggie say that ironing means you don't need to wash at such high temperatures. Kim would be absolutely appalled at all you non ironing slatterns. Grin

gogohm · 25/10/2021 14:58

I don't, end of. Hotels have roller press machines

TatianaBis · 25/10/2021 14:58

You get a cleaner. I hate ironing.

blink18two · 25/10/2021 14:58

@MerryMarigold

I don't. They are creased after 5 mins of sleeping in/ on them.
I think they're a different type of creases though!
OP posts:
Mablefly · 25/10/2021 14:58

Hang over the bannister straight out of machine (or on the line in the summer). No noticeable creases!

user1497787065 · 25/10/2021 14:58

I am the exception it seems and yes I iron duvet covers.

I fold in four length ways iron either side and then turn and iron the other two quarters then fold to store. It doesn't take long really and sorry I could not but a ever cover on the bed without ironing it. Even my cat has an ironed duvet cover!
