To ask how the fuck you iron your king size duvet covers?

And fitted sheets?

I recently lost my grandmother and I have decided that I need to bloody well up my standards a bit - she had very high standards, and she's right!

I'm quite good at ironing generally, even work shirts but I just can't work out how to iron a massive duvet cover without it taking hours/being bloody difficult

my mother used to have probably still has a rotary iron like this

that was our chore if we misbehave.
one hour on the machine ironing sheets and duvet cover and table cloths and handkerchiefs.
and woe behold if there was any crease.

and no. I don't iron anything

Yerroblemom1923 · 25/10/2021 20:01

Dont put them in the tumble dryer as this dries them too much for ironing. Either line dry or hang over banister over night.
Use Comfort crease release spray as you iron. I put duvet cover over ironing board and keep turning it. Then fold it in half. Iron. Fold into quarters. Iron. Ready to go on bed. Fitted sheets just keep rotating on ironing board. I still don't really know how to fold them effectively so just put back on bed straight away.

jackiebenimble · 25/10/2021 20:02

I iron mine! And am otherwise slovenly. I take one side and iron it all the way to the bottom and then flip it around and iron the other half all they way to the bottom. Its awkward when the iron stand is covered. But im left handed and awkward as hell.

Personally i don't like the way crumpled sheets feel better on my skin. Or how they look.

They do iron better when they aren't bone dry or tumbled. And i find the steam setting on the iron means i can do one in about 12 mins.

Frazzledd · 25/10/2021 20:03

I don't iron them, but I have a big throw that covers half the bed & matching cushions...plus most of my bedding is highly patterned so disguises creases quite well!

I'm sorry for your loss OP. My Nan used to have the comfiest, best made beds ever! We spent most school holidays with her, she'd iron everything, hospital cornered sheets , with a pulled tight extra sheet underneath to climb under, the biggest, fluffiest pillows, massive duvets...

Not thought about those beds in a long time, I miss my nan, its brought back nice memories. Thank you Flowers

You get a cleaner. I hate ironing.

I can't justify 'getting a cleaner' when I'm a SAHM.“

Why? I had cleaners when I was at home with my small ones. Far rather have spent my time with them than ironing bedding.

I was spending time with him, just while ironing. He was playing and I was making all the right ooohs and aaaahs.

It's not one or the other

If I want 100% cotton I like the seersucker fabric that’s sort of puckered and doesn’t need ironing

catwhispererpsps · 25/10/2021 20:08

When it's on the bed 🙈

KhaleesiOfChaos · 25/10/2021 20:14

@AICM

Why the fuck do you iron duvet covers?
Ha ha - this with bells on!!!!
GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 25/10/2021 20:17

I don’t iron bedding, except maybe pillowcases for guests.
Any creases soon smooth themselves out. And they hardly show anyway on patterned duvet covers.,

Flareyairy · 25/10/2021 20:25

I literally envy anyone that has the time (or is it the 'arsedness'?) to give a shit about how flat a piece of material is that only you are going to see. Occasionally when you happen to be in the room. Plus it goes flat after a day or so anyway.

So envious. Obviously way too much chaos going on in the rest of my life to even consider caring!

ElephantOfRisk · 25/10/2021 20:28

It's not how it looks, it's how it feels. The top can be creased but I like the bit next to me to be ironed. I don't wear Pjs.

BreakfastOfWaffles · 25/10/2021 20:30

@Echinops

I do at work, I fold it in half and half again, length ways, and iron down one side, then the other, then turn the fold the other way and iron those 2 sides, so I've done it in 4 panels, if that makes any sense.
This is exactly what I do too. It works well with a hot steam iron. I find they look so much better after ironing and last longer looking nice on the bed.
Flareyairy · 25/10/2021 20:32

Fair enough @ ElephantOfRisk, totally get that as there's a few things I need to just feel right..

yes, some things I'm not fussed about but DH is worse than me. He has thermal tops he wears for work that are completely crease free and worn underneath his uniform, but he needs to iron them for the feel.
Mrstamborineman · 25/10/2021 20:36

I don’t iron or justify not doing it.

boreon · 25/10/2021 20:37

I don't! I wash my superking bedding and dry the bottom sheet in the dryer and hang the duvet cover and pillowcases over my landing bannister and it dries kind of un-creased Grin
Life's too short for ironing bedding

carolinesbaby · 25/10/2021 21:21

I own an Iron. I've used it once in the last two years.

I don't iron bedding, obviously.

Yes, standards are important, but so is my limited free time. Life's too short to worry about whether my duvet covers are creased.

Echinops · 25/10/2021 21:37

The king size duvets at work, we also sewed strong snap/pop fastenings at each corner and middle of the edges of the duvet and the inside of the covers, makes it so much easier to change.

Marvellousmadness · 25/10/2021 21:43

Hahahahha ironing your bed sheets.

Ain't nobody got time for that

daisyjgrey · 25/10/2021 21:45

Don't.

@RachelHasThoseInBurgundy

As a professional ironer, what kind of iron would you recommend? No iron I've ever had seems to get out stubborn creases in things like cotton shirts or bedding.

I use a Bosch steam generator (picture attached) it’s very good at ironing, however I don’t like the water tank, it’s awkward to fill and they don’t send you a jug to fill it, I think they should have added a little flap to open for filling rather than having to remove it every time and try and angle your jug/tap into the gap. Other than that I have no issues with it.

For creases I try and iron damp where possible, failing that use a crease release spray. You can make up your own with hair conditioner. (Tutorials online)

Thanks! I'll look up the crease release spray. One of those steam generator irons is on my wanted list for while I have a house with a utility room or somewhere proper to store it.
nokidshere · 26/10/2021 16:01

I wash then tumble mine and put straight back on the bed warm. No creases by the time I get in it.

AryaStarkWolf · 26/10/2021 16:04

Ironing Duvet covers? bahahahaha life is too short!

HeronLanyon · 26/10/2021 16:12

By folding them. That is all.
