To ask how the fuck you iron your king size duvet covers?

And fitted sheets?

I recently lost my grandmother and I have decided that I need to bloody well up my standards a bit - she had very high standards, and she's right!

I'm quite good at ironing generally, even work shirts but I just can't work out how to iron a massive duvet cover without it taking hours/being bloody difficult

hotel sheets - they have roller ironing machines. They are amazing and do give and incredible crisp result, but it is quite different to ironing by hand.

ironing = back breaking work. I would say that if you are taller than the average woman, then, yes, ironing really is back breaking. This is becuase 99% of ironing boards are too low. (they are also pretty narrow, but that is another issues)

I have deliberately bought a taller ironing board. I can stand stright and iron at a comfortable height.
I rarely iron, and often throw down a towle and iron the front. But when I do need to iron, I do not need to be bent over a board killing my back.

Same actually applied to baby buggies and kitchen sinks. My Granny's kitchen had extra high work surfaces, it was ace.

I have standards btw and they extend to caring, politeness, consideration for other people, integrity, professionalism etc. Not having smooth duvet covers.

Sanctimonious or what

Lysianthus · 25/10/2021 17:09

What’s an iron? Good folding on the airer works for us.

StTherese · 25/10/2021 17:10

I iron our bedding, it's quite soothing tbh. I use a steam generator and put a bit of witch hazel in with the water compartment, it makes the ironing smell lovely and fresh.

HopeHappy · 25/10/2021 17:18

@TheSpiral

I dry them hanging up, either on the line or over the top bannisters, and they don't have creases.
I miss my balconied landing in my old house with it's straight bannisters - my sheets were always so flat!

Nowadays they just get folded on to an airer then folded further in to the cupboard once dry. I can't say they look un-ironed when going on the bed though.

Last time I had to use my iron was when my DP came to stay and my Mum wanted to iron something she'd brought with her.

She was incredulous that my ironing board was at the back of a cupboard and that my iron is about 20 years old! Grin

I iron my all my bedding. I change my daughter's bed daily as the dog sleeps in with her and sheds so I need to change it daily to stop hair being everywhere. I have alot of bedclothes for that reason😅. I just iron one side so I fold the duvet in half and iron one side then flip over and iron the other but it is only actually ironing one side if that makes sense. I iron absolutely everything down to DH boxers. I think I may have a form of OCD as it seems my cleaning and obsession with everything being spotless is getting too much

BatshitCrazyWoman · 25/10/2021 17:40

Mine don't seem to need ironing, they're perfectly crease free. I like my bed to look neat, and it does without ironing!

LittleDandelionClock · 25/10/2021 17:40

@blink18two

Never ironed a duvet cover in my life. Nor a sheet, nor a pillowcase

In fact I don't iron anything - ever.

DH has work shirts that need ironing, but he does them himself.

blink18two · 25/10/2021 17:44

@toconclude

Why on earth do you need to start ironing duvet covers and fitted sheets just because your grandmother died? Condolonces, but that's batty. Find another way to remember her that isn't an utter waste of time
Urgh.

I think values are important. Why are "standards" important and what do you mean by "standards"?

krustykittens · 25/10/2021 17:50

That brings back memories of my Granny. Every Sunday was ironing day and that woman was a fiend for ironing! She even ironed dust cloths! I did the same thing when she died, more from the comfort of remembering her. I confess, I stopped, as ironing just isn't my thing, but I do keep up her high cleaning standards.

crochetcrazy1978 · 25/10/2021 17:53

I've seen people use crease release spray and a handheld steamer. I've also seen people whizz over them whilst they are on the bed with a cordless iron. I personally buy easycare bedding and hang to dry which means no creases

WonderfulYou · 25/10/2021 17:55

Sorry if I’ve misinterpreted your posts but you come across as someone with high anxiety.
Have you always been like this?
Do you think it’s the grief?
Or do you think just because you’re a SAHP your house should be picture perfect?

saraclara · 25/10/2021 17:57

I don't. My duvet covers are 100% cotton seersucker. They look crisp and gorgeous without ironing!

Kdubs1981 · 25/10/2021 18:03

Nope!

BashfulClam · 25/10/2021 18:04

I don’t, when I was selling my house I ran the iron over the bed before viewings. I just don’t iron but my gran would be horrified, she couldn’t understand why you would wear unironed pants. I said ‘Ach no one sees my pants!’ She was horrified ‘what if you tripped and you skirt went up and someone saw your pants?’ Well I don’t think it would ever happen and if it did I don’t think the first thought would be ‘that slattern has creased pants on!’ My other gran had the right idea ‘yer bum irons yer pants!’

saraclara · 25/10/2021 18:05

Hope this loads, to go with my seersucker post. Seriously, white seersucker is the answer. It's the nicest bedlinen I've had in my entire 60-odd years and the least effort of anything I've owned before.

Mine was M&S, btw, not the brand I stole this photo from. Not sure if they still do the exact one.

Munchyseeds · 25/10/2021 18:05

Simple ....I don't
Dry on the line or airer and fold
Lifes to short to iron such things
That said my Nan loved ironing!

sbhydrogen · 25/10/2021 18:08

I don't really iron my clothes (except some dresses), but I love to iron my bed sheets!

I tend to fold them in half or thirds. Fitted sheets are a bit more tricky, I can't really explain how I fold them for ironing.

sbhydrogen · 25/10/2021 18:09

Ironed sheets make getting into bed feel soooo luxurious.

PaperMonster · 25/10/2021 18:10

Fold in half and iron one half, then keep folding and ironing the bit that’s not been ironed. Can’t stand unironed bedding!

emlouwat · 25/10/2021 18:10

I take mine to the dry cleaners to be pressed properly

TonTonMacoute · 25/10/2021 18:16

I recently bought linen bedding so I don't have to iron them.

When I do use cotton bedding I don't iron them but I dry them until they are not quite fully dry then smooth and fold and hang on the airer. It helps that I have an Aga so I know they are fully aired.

A steam press is also an expensive option.
