A traditional Roast On A Sunday

I cannot lie I love love love a traditional roast on a Sunday I look forward to it all day. My husband on the other hand is saying it is not the 1950s anymore and it is old hat to want this and he reckons very few people actually have a roast at home on a Sunday each week.

Am I being unreasonable to have this one meal I really enjoy each week. Am I alone?

I would say that his argument also involves the fact that as we have young children he usually ends up cooking most of it and he says it is not worth all the effort!!!! I disagree - would also like to add we usually have what he likes on any given day of the rest of the week.

Love a nice roast dinner.

SeasonalNamechange · 24/10/2021 20:22

i find them very overrated

LittleGreyFluffyCat · 24/10/2021 20:22

We have a roast every Sunday, like you I look forward to it all day. My husband loves cooking it though.

Shoxfordian · 24/10/2021 20:23

I don’t like roast dinners
If you’re the one that really wants it then you should cook it

loudbatperson · 24/10/2021 20:23

We have one most Sunday's, but usually go out for it once a month, which as the main cook of the house I really enjoy. A roast isn't particularly taxing but it's always nice to have one without having to cook and serve it.

Maybe take over the cooking of it? If your husband doesn't really want it, it's not fair for him to feel obligated to cook one for you.

BabbleBee · 24/10/2021 20:23

I love a roast but it is a faff to cook it.

dementedpixie · 24/10/2021 20:24

We have them every few weeks; certainly not every week. They cause a lot of mess that needs cleared up afterwards

CoffeeRunner · 24/10/2021 20:24

I'm on the fence with this. I do love a roast dinner. But I also find them an annoying faff to cook!

LettertoHermoine · 24/10/2021 20:24

Why don't you cook it and let him look after the kids? Problem solved.

sbhydrogen · 24/10/2021 20:24

I love a roast on a Sunday, especially in the autumn and winter. I do tend to go out to a pub to eat them though!

Hellocatshome · 24/10/2021 20:25

We have one most Sundays but it isn't that much effort. We do the meat in the slow cooker then have frozen roasties and Yorkshire puddings and the veg doesnt take long. I always things like that are only a lot of effort if you make them. When the kids were younger we sometimes got a ready cooked chicken from the supermarket and frozen veg that you bung in the microwave.

MsWalterMitty · 24/10/2021 20:26

You cook it then

Bobsyer · 24/10/2021 20:26

I love a roast dinner and we have them most Sundays. I don't find it a faff at all, unless I'm doing Yorkshires and that's because I need to put the oven up to full heat and do them on their own. It's not a big deal though. But once you've got the timings right it's easy.

I'm not evangelical about it, I'd be perfectly happy to not have a roast!

Yummymummy2020 · 24/10/2021 20:26

I love a roast dinner and try to have one every weekend! I don’t begrudge it as I enjoy it so much. If you are cooking all week he should humor you and do it I say!

TinaYouFatLard · 24/10/2021 20:26

I LOVE a Sunday roast. It’s the whole ritual of it as well as the delicious food.

SantasLittleHoHoHo · 24/10/2021 20:26

I adore them! Totally makes Sunday's feel perfect. However with two young kids - is it worth the hours of prep / cooking for half the people eating it to not really appreciate it? Also if he doesn't really feel like they're worth it, but still has to cook it for you that could be why he feels that way!

LivingNextDoorToNorma · 24/10/2021 20:26

We have a roast every couple of weeks usually, less in the summer when it’s hot. I really enjoy them, but they’re a faff to make. I’m the one who cooks it, and I couldn’t face doing it every single week.

Amberflames · 24/10/2021 20:26

Probably once a month here.

thistimelastweek · 24/10/2021 20:26

I like a Sunday roast.
It's not just that it's delicious, it gives Sundays a distinctive feel which I like.

TolkiensFallow · 24/10/2021 20:27

I LOVE a Sunday roast. We have them every Sunday

ASDFamily · 24/10/2021 20:28

I love a roast but we don't have one every sunday. It is more effort to cook, but I'm the one cooking it. We are currently away in a holiday cottage and I did a roast today!
I don't think you can insist that DH cooks a roast.... Why can't you do it if you want it every week?

MrsKDB · 24/10/2021 20:28

So much faff. Easy for the person who’s not cooking it to demand it.

Tagcurious · 24/10/2021 20:29

I love a roast and we have one pretty much every Sunday. I’ve had a tough weekend so I got takeaway roasts from Toby Carvery. They are amazing.

TomPinch · 24/10/2021 20:30

YANBU. Love a good roast done properly. And if you roast a decent sized piece of meat then there is plenty over for other meals.

I do find it a faff though. 2.5kg of beef, making Yorkshire puddings (or pork and getting the crackling just right), parboiling spuds, making gravy out of the juices and emulsifying it, preparing two other kinds of veg, and timing it all - I find that way more work than most other meals. I know there are short cuts but they make it not worth doing.

kitcat15 · 24/10/2021 20:30

We had a roast today 😋
My daughter made it but in my kitchen as its bigger than hers..... its our first home cooked one since easter 🐣 ..... i loved it 🥰
There was me, partner, 3 grown up kids, son in law, 3 grandaughters and the dog....the food was lovely but having all my family around was lovelier
