A traditional Roast On A Sunday

I cannot lie I love love love a traditional roast on a Sunday I look forward to it all day. My husband on the other hand is saying it is not the 1950s anymore and it is old hat to want this and he reckons very few people actually have a roast at home on a Sunday each week.

Am I being unreasonable to have this one meal I really enjoy each week. Am I alone?

I would say that his argument also involves the fact that as we have young children he usually ends up cooking most of it and he says it is not worth all the effort!!!! I disagree - would also like to add we usually have what he likes on any given day of the rest of the week.

I love a roast dinner but haven't eaten meat for two years. Love the roasties, Yorkshire puddings and veg but can't quite get over the gap on my plate. Have tried various nut roasts but they just taste like stuffing which I like but a box of paxo just as good.

elliejjtiny · 24/10/2021 20:44

I like roast pork and beef but hate chicken. We do roast every Sunday for the whole family and it's usually chicken because it's cheaper so I end up just eating the veg and the pudding. I could really do without it to be honest.

RampantIvy · 24/10/2021 20:45

as we have young children he usually ends up cooking most of it

Why?
Why can't he look after the children and you cook the dinner?

Therunecaster · 24/10/2021 20:46

I love a Sunday dinner. Every other week I cook for 10. I have the most amazing hot lock that I stuff everything into. Got it for 20 quid 20 years ago. No faffing about with timings of worrying about stuff getting cold.

I get cleaned up before serving and then ta tarrr it all comes out piping hot. I do use Aunt Bessies roasties as we love them!

Dindundundundeeer · 24/10/2021 20:46

Frozen Yorkers. No, just NO

Embroidery · 24/10/2021 20:46

I love a roast dinner.
Cant you cook it and he looks after the kids. Take turns.
Also use shortcuts, M&S roast in bag Roast Chicken is lovely and no work at all. Roast potatoes, 3 veg, gravy and stuffing. Aunt bessies yorkshire puds. Easier to cook than spag bol!

ImInStealthMode · 24/10/2021 20:46

I love a roast dinner but every week would get old quickly. We probably have 3-4 a year at home, and only in winter.

elliejjtiny · 24/10/2021 20:46

Forgot about the yorkshires. I eat those too but not the roast potatoes as they get cooked with the chicken and taste of chicken fat.

TatianaBis · 24/10/2021 20:46

Can’t stand roast ‘dinners’ (unless it’s a bird), can’t even bear the name.

If he has to cook it he cooks what he likes.

Dontgetyerknicksinatwist · 24/10/2021 20:46

I love a good M&S roast. Our family favourite is the lamb. I get the ready prepared roasties, red cabbage, cauliflower cheese and broccoli. I add ready made fresh lamb gravy and mint sauce. It’s on the pricey side but cheaper than eating out and is fairly quick and easy to prepare and the kids love it.

MeltedCheeseonTop · 24/10/2021 20:47

Love a roast (or a version of - pie/toad etc) every week during the winter. Football Sunday for us!

Don’t get why it’s more of a faff than anything else though. Possibly as it’s the only day of the week I get to cook for fun at my own pace rather than squeezing it in while I work between school and activities etc!

IamJuliaJohnson · 24/10/2021 20:47

I love a roast, and so do the kids, but DH is less fussed. I do most of the cooking and meal planning so we have a roast as often as I fancy/can be bothered. It can be as easy or as complicated as you want to make it but really is just down to timings. I rarely do ‘proper’ roasties (with parboil and tons of fat), sometimes opting for just nice Charlotte potatoes tossed in oil and salt and pepper then bake. Usually do roast parsnip and carrots. If I’m feeling wintery I might braise some red cabbage in red wine, and I almost always do Yorkshires. Best bit imo! We haven’t had one for a few weeks but it is hard to get it really wrong, and is a crowd pleaser.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 24/10/2021 20:47

I like a roast dinner but not every week. We have one more like monthly.

Dontgetyerknicksinatwist · 24/10/2021 20:48

Oh and yes we have the giant Yorkshire’s too - ready prepared of course 😂

Holidaytan · 24/10/2021 20:49

We have them very, very occasionally, unless we’re eating out.
But there’s just the two of us and to be honest, we’re normally out doing fun things at the weekend rather than in the kitchen cooking a meal for half the day!

Whatwouldnanado · 24/10/2021 20:50

Do it yourself. Love a roast but often have it as an evening meal on Sunday. Parboil the roasties, prep meat to cook long and slow while we're out or doing other stuff and simmer a bit of other veg. Yorkshires and roasties cook at the same time later on. Leftovers are great for the next day or two so it saves time overall.

AnneLovesGilbert · 24/10/2021 20:50

I love it and happily cook one about once a month.

You can’t be dictating meals you aren’t willing to cook. If you want it you have to cook it. Why don’t you?

ittakes2 · 24/10/2021 20:50

You question is not "Am I being unreasonable to have this one meal I really enjoy each week?"
Its "Am I being unfair expecting my husband to cook the roast dinner I want each Sunday."

621CustardCream438 · 24/10/2021 20:50

I do one about six times a year, rarely on a Sunday. Too much faff and kids don’t like it. If I’m going to faff around in the kitchen half the afternoon I’d rather make a big batch of lasagna or cottage pies or something else that can also be frozen and thus makes easy midweek meals too. I don’t particularly like leftover roast veg or meat, so a roast only does one meal and maybe a sandwich or two for DH if it was a bigger chicken.

If someone else cooks one I’ll very happily eat it. I think it’s completely out of order to complain your DH doesn’t want to spend a lot of time cooking a meal he doesn’t like though.

hotmeatymilk · 24/10/2021 20:51

We do it every few weeks because DD is a roast dinner fiend and falls about in paroxysms of delight when she learns that today is a roast potato! gravy! broccoli! carrots! day. (The meat she can take or leave.)

I find them a faff as, though the individual components are easy, the overall prep and timings tie you to the house, so it kills a Sunday morning all-family outing, then there’s all the clear-up afterwards, and suddenly the day is gone.

mamaduckbone · 24/10/2021 20:51

We have a roast more often in the autumn and winter, rarely in the summer. I do enjoy it and feel that it marks Sunday out as different from every other day. The Dcs aren't big fans though so we don't have one every week.

OverByYer · 24/10/2021 20:51

Love it. When my children were younger it was the one meal we all enjoyed, especially after spending Sunday’s on a cold, damp rugby pitch. Sigh, those were the days.

AlbertBridge · 24/10/2021 20:52

We had one today (roast pork with crackling) for the first time in ages and it was bloody lush! Plus it's a relatively easy and affordable meal. The pork joint was huge but only £5.14.

Chattercino · 24/10/2021 20:52

We have a roast lunch most Sundays. I really love that tradition

TwinsandTrifle · 24/10/2021 20:52

@MsWalterMitty

You cook it then
