A traditional Roast On A Sunday

Middicat · 24/10/2021 20:21

I cannot lie I love love love a traditional roast on a Sunday I look forward to it all day. My husband on the other hand is saying it is not the 1950s anymore and it is old hat to want this and he reckons very few people actually have a roast at home on a Sunday each week.

Am I being unreasonable to have this one meal I really enjoy each week. Am I alone?

I would say that his argument also involves the fact that as we have young children he usually ends up cooking most of it and he says it is not worth all the effort!!!! I disagree - would also like to add we usually have what he likes on any given day of the rest of the week.

I can’t stand a “quick roast” with frozen potatoes and Yorkshire puddings so will only cook one if we have friends over.
Otherwise we might go out for one but not often. There’s a million things I’d rather eat to be honest and spend my Sunday doing.

We have a more special meal but it isn't necessarily a roast, and if it is a roast it might not be a traditional one.

Might be lasagne, a stew that has slowly cooked for hours + dumplings, roast might be more Middle Eastern flavours. Can't be doing with the exact same meal every week.

glitterelf · 24/10/2021 20:31

I love a roast dinner but not exclusively on a Sunday you can't beat a midweek roast. I do work from home though so it's easy for me to do.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 24/10/2021 20:33

I like a roast, and don't mind cooking it, but I only do one about once a month. Wouldn't want to have to do it every week, and if DH tried to demand I do, he'd be going very hungry!

VestaTilley · 24/10/2021 20:33

We have one every Sunday in autumn and winter, and something else nice in spring and summer if it’s hot. If it’s a cold spring day we’ll have a roast then too.

Our Sunday’s are quite traditional - church, sherry, catch up on Gardener’s World while our toddler naps, then a roast.

I think if your DH finds it a faff to cook then maybe you should cook it or take turns, but similarly he needs to do more cooking mid-week if so.

iwishiwasonhol · 24/10/2021 20:34

I love a roast and its the one meal the kids all enjoy ,but we have it on a Wednesday as i work on Sundays

RoseRedRoseBlue · 24/10/2021 20:34

The Roast Dinner pasties the next day are equally good!

Sparklingbrook · 24/10/2021 20:34

I can't be bothered with a roast dinner on a Sunday, but I enjoy an occasional carvery in the evening or on a Saturday.
Don;t really want to spend Sunday indoors cooking and eating.

StTherese · 24/10/2021 20:34

I love a nice roast dinner, but I only do a Sunday roast every few weeks. I do sometimes cook one midweek as a treat.
Prep the veg the night before to save time, and just have frozen yorkies. Gravy - Bisto Best, with 2 oxo cubes added. Keep it simple!

Fetarabbit · 24/10/2021 20:35

I like a roast on a Sunday during autumn and winter, but only if we can be arsed. He probably isn't that bothered as he ends up cooking most of it when he doesn't seem to really want it Confused. Why not agree a meal plan for the week of stuff you both enjoy/a balance of stuff you both like and then if you want one Sunday you cook?

oviraptor21 · 24/10/2021 20:36

We love them here still. Don't always manage them every week any more but when we did it was a focal point of the week and a lovely way to bring the family together.

Is there any way you can be more involved in the cooking? Or swap roles so every other week you do the cooking ie the Sunday roast. Kid pressure pay turn it into a weekly event ..... ?

MrsSkylerWhite · 24/10/2021 20:36

I think a perfect roast is probably the hardest meal to cook. So many things/timings, proper gravy, pudding etc.

Once a year here, Christmas Day and then in the evening.

If I ate that lot at “lunchtime” I’d be comatose for the rest of the day.

galacticpixels · 24/10/2021 20:36

That's a real pain to have to cook one every Sunday if he doesn't want to.

We only have a roast a few times a year.

DeepaBeesKit · 24/10/2021 20:37

Have it every week pretty much. My kids are quite young and it's the easy option as they both eat it well and it's not too difficult to make.

drpet49 · 24/10/2021 20:37

Genuinely don’t know anyone who has a roast dinner every Sunday.

catgirl1976 · 24/10/2021 20:38

A roast is the least faffiest meal in the world. I do one every Sunday with all the trimmings including pigs in blankets, cauli cheese, home made Yorkshire’s etc and I find it simple and easy. It’s just timings and I prep everything during the time the oven is heating up and the chickens had its first 30 mins then baste it abs then it’s just a case of shoving other bits in and taking them out at the right time

But if you want you cook it

AlfonsoTheUnrepetant · 24/10/2021 20:38

I love roast dinners but rarely eat them.

pourmeanotherglass · 24/10/2021 20:39

We often have a roast on a Sunday but not always.
I look forward to it, as it is often the only day i eat meat - the kids are both veggie and i cant be bothered to cook 2 separate meals on a weeknight but normally do on a Sunday.

Snowdropsandbluebells · 24/10/2021 20:39

This made me laugh.. you love the roast but you don't cook it

I would love that too Grin

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 24/10/2021 20:39

Love a Sunday dinner. I only have the veg as I don't eat meat. It's a faff to cook though so it's rare we have one.

InFiveMins · 24/10/2021 20:40

We used to have a Sunday roast every Sunday without fail. I love them, and I enjoy cooking them too.

We are currently trying to eat healthier so haven't had one for a couple of months and I really miss it.

userxx · 24/10/2021 20:41

I used to enjoy a roast dinner every few months, I then got together with someone who likes one every Sunday. It's absolutely killed it for me. I find them boring and so much cleaning up afterwards. I'd happily never eat one again.

steppemum · 24/10/2021 20:42

love a roast, but hate the amount of time it takes out of my Sunday.

We have one every couple of months, not more often.

I think if your dh is doing most of the cooking, then he gets to say he doesn't want to cook it!

Not being sarky, seriously impressed (and hoping for an invitation Grin)

Raymond Blanc? Pah! Roux Brothers? Piece of cake.

Sunday roast 😱

EcoCustard · 24/10/2021 20:43

I love a roast dinner but don’t one weekly. It’s about once a month in the winter. DH cooks roast beef and I cook roast chicken or lamb. Rarely have one in the summer, bbq then. I find it a faff with our young kids.
