A traditional Roast On A Sunday

I cannot lie I love love love a traditional roast on a Sunday I look forward to it all day. My husband on the other hand is saying it is not the 1950s anymore and it is old hat to want this and he reckons very few people actually have a roast at home on a Sunday each week.

Am I being unreasonable to have this one meal I really enjoy each week. Am I alone?

I would say that his argument also involves the fact that as we have young children he usually ends up cooking most of it and he says it is not worth all the effort!!!! I disagree - would also like to add we usually have what he likes on any given day of the rest of the week.

I made roast dinner yesterday. Went to the shop to buy the stuff at 10.30 . Was out of the door by 2.30 to go to work. It certainly doesn't take all day !

I really don't want to spend my precious Sunday food shopping and cooking.

@PrawnofthePatriarchy

I find it a really easy meal to make.
Tell me how! Honestly, maybe I'm taking too much time over this.
mbosnz · 25/10/2021 19:11

Love them, but we do mix it up. We also do burgers sometimes, that sort of thing.

CoalCraft · 25/10/2021 19:15

They're alright if someone else cooks them but definitely more trouble than they're worth - I agree with your DH there.

YANBU to enjoy them though, each to their own and all.

@BlackAlys

It's all in the timings. None of the instructions are difficult. Try making eg just roast chicken, or just roast potatoes. Note how long it takes

I have a note of what time to do everything, and it's foolproof

GirlWithAGuitar · 25/10/2021 19:59

Although it does mean he shuts himself away in the kitchen for the majority of the day, and is apparently absolved of any further duties

That’s probably why he loves it so much. 😬

@DyingForACuppa

DH is Italian so we alternate the Sunday roast with a traditional Italian sunday meal from his family that is so faffy it makes a roast look like child play. He makes it though, and the children help!

In either case we have enough leftovers for 1/2 easy meals during the week (we usually portion and freeze the roast meat).

Obviously we do sometimes go out to things but generally speaking as we are very busy in the week, I try to plan an outing/visit Saturday and have Sunday as a rest day, day to do all the small home jobs, reset for the week. We drink wine at lunchtime and watch a film or play a boardgame after the meal clear up.

ooh what things do you have when it's Italian Sunday meal please? I like to mix it up for new ideas. Smile

misses point of thread

I love cooking a roast as its so predictable and no thinking involved. My grown up kids say its their favourite dinner and they would never do it for themselves. So if they are home there is always a very positive response. It's trying to think of what to cook every other day that's the pain l find.

LeSquigh · 28/10/2021 16:25

I love roast dinners but they take so much time to prepare and so much time to wash up that I rarely bother.

whattodo2019 · 28/10/2021 16:36

We usually have a roast every sunday

Not2daySatan · 28/10/2021 16:49

In the autumn/winter we have a roast every Sunday and in the spring/summer I still roast the meat and have it with salad instead
