15 baby boys were given the name 'Lucifer' in 2020.

@Sparklesocks

Maybe you could go as Luc or Louis instead Grin
Or Lucy
NiceGerbil · 23/10/2021 04:06

Still surprised by all the it's fine etc posts!

What if, when grown-

Wants to go into politics? Who votes for Lucifer? Bet name would impact!

Is religious and Christian?

Would it impact job applications?

Esp as thinking about it. If I came across a Lucifer (and hadn't read this thread!) I would have assumed it was a name that had adopted themselves. Never would have imagined it was actual name!

Are there any countries they may want to live in/ travel to that it might be a prob? Some countries have a list of names you can't call baby. Not sure with adult coming in.

Say you want to work with people like in a care home, hospital etc. Name would be ???!!! and could freak some people out...

I assume the child will have a nickname.

Oh and.
How would a child feel when they got old enough to know what most well known connotation is here, wouldn't they be v likely to think why the hell did parents call me that??!!

TasteTheMeatNotTheHeat · 23/10/2021 04:13

I don't think it's a big deal. I can think of much worse names.

oakleaffy · 23/10/2021 04:21

No one benches at Lucy , which has more or less the the same meaning?

Ooh love to hear them!

@NiceGerbil

Gary springs to mind, for starters...

pelosi · 23/10/2021 04:29

It means morning star in Latin. Morning star is a common name in many languages, it’s a shame it doesn’t work in the West due to the connotation.

oakleaffy · 23/10/2021 04:31

Edit : No one blenches at Lucy is what it should say- Bloomin spellcheck!

Tilltheend99 · 23/10/2021 04:35

Lucifer is the Latin translation of the Hebrew word for morning star used in the passage Isaiah 14 which came to be interpreted in early Christianity as a passage about the Devil’s fall from grace/origin story. At least that’s my appraise of this wiki explanation. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucifer

Would be more worried about the people taking against Damien’s on religious grounds considering that is a fictional character from a horror movie and the name means ‘conquer,’ or ‘to tame.’

People can do what they want (up to a point) but I think this is more to do with the trend for naming kids after whichever box set was watched last.

SarahBellam · 23/10/2021 04:55

@Missmissmiiiiiiiiisss

YANBU Why would you call your child after personifies evil Shock
Lucifer doesn’t personify evil at all. Lucifer punishes evil.

The TV series was great and likely reframed how people thought about him - protector of good, rehabilitates bad.

Nocaloriesinchocolate · 23/10/2021 07:53

Smiling now at thought of baby Lucifer wanting to go into the church when he grows up - Rev Lucifer would certainly be memorable! Especially if he married a Lilith!!

I knew a (lovely, well behaved) boy at school whose surname was De'ath. Rev Lucifer De'Ath might boost the congregation.

What on earth is wrong with Teddy? It’s quite an old name that can be short for Edward or Theodore 🙄

I agree. It's a great name. Edward, Edmund, Edgar or Theodore all classic names that have Teddy as a lovely nn. The Teddys and Teds I've met in life have always been lovely men.
Feckauras · 23/10/2021 09:07

You all are batshit crazy! It’s only a bloody name. Like I said not everyone cares about the bible and sees it as a stupid scaremongering story.

I wonder if this is a generation thing, I can’t think of anyone in their mid thirties and below who would bat an eyelash at that name.

Alfxn · 23/10/2021 09:08
@MrsTerryPratchett I particularly feel for the children registered as Micheal (8), Pheonix (7), and Pheobe (19), among all the other alternative spellings 😬
So I hate to be this person (Grin), but Micheal is actually an Irish name pronounced Mee-hall.

In fact the current Taoiseach (prime minister)'s name is Micheál.

Before I get jumped on, to be technically correct, there should be some fadas in the name - Micheál or Mícheál - but sometimes they don't get inputted on computer forms.

Of course, some of these could also be misspelled Michael's Grin

Alfxn · 23/10/2021 09:10

Michaels, not Michael's

TuftyMarmoset · 23/10/2021 09:42

Thanks @Alfxn, that’s useful to know. I’m out of the loop on Irish stuff, I didn’t even realise Leo Varadkar wasn’t Taoiseach anymore Blush

@Feckauras I’m 26 and I think it’s awful. Regardless of whether you are Christian or not, the name has a broader cultural association which is unfair to saddle a child with.

Teddy is fine as a nickname, for a little boy. However I wouldn't name a child Teddy as there is them no other option for a grown man to use!
TheChiefJo · 23/10/2021 10:34

@DogInATent

It sums up the basic flaw in the concept of being given a name at birth and being expected to carry it for life.

Wouldn't it be much more sensible to be able to choose your name at 16/17? - you could choose to keep the one you're given, or you could choose something else entirely.

The theory of this is good, but 16/17 year old are tasteless in the extreme! I'm trying to think what 16 year old me would have saddled 40 year old me with... It's why you can't get tattoos till you're at least 18. I'd have probably gone with a comedy character name, Waynetta or something thinking it was hilarious. Grin
YourFinestPantaloons · 23/10/2021 11:11

FGS Lucifer is an actual name that's been appropriated on ONE culture by people who believe Satan is called Lucifer.

And frankly if people are thick enough to think a child has links to the devil because of his name I wouldn't personally take their dubious opinions into account in any way shape or form.

I think it's a lovely strong name. I'm a teacher though and I am used to hearing unusual names. All of them after a while don't seem unusual at all!

YourFinestPantaloons · 23/10/2021 11:13

Also Teddy is a lovely name. I know a Theodore who is nicknamed Teddy, it's lovely.

My DD is named after a season she wasn't born in. She very nearly was but she came early and we'd already picked the name out. Some thick bastards people act like we may as well flog her half to death every day for the trauma we've inflicted. She gets "Autumn born in July? Why didn't you call her Summer?". Because we didn't like the name Summer, why don't you have more brain cells

QuestionableMouse · 23/10/2021 11:53

Adolf is a name too.

Both have (strongly) negative/ "bad" connotations and it's disingenuous to ignore that.

TheChiefJo · 23/10/2021 12:04

@YourFinestPantaloons

Yes to people being thick. We named one of ours Damien. Many idiots have asked why we named him after the devil. I point out that it means 'shelter' and was simply the name chosen by the script writers of a shlocky horror film for their main character. My ex BIL laughed and said "ha ha, Fools and Horses!" when he was first named. I asked him if he understood the joke on F&H and he had no idea about the Omen films... Proper thick.

Feckauras · 23/10/2021 12:05

@QuestionableMouse Hmm Adolf was a REAL person who was pure evil. You can not compare the name Adolf to a name in the bible that some people believe is a true story!
