15 baby boys were given the name 'Lucifer' in 2020.

It's not something I'd personally want to yell across the playground 🤷🏻‍♀️

Were there any Beelzebubs?

I quite like it. As a PP said it’s better than names like Teddy. It’s got a nice strong sound. It’s got all sorts of meanings.

Awful. It's just a name in the same way Adolf is just a name.

It's actually quite a nice name, but you wouldn't burden your kid with it would you?

Poor kids

I really like the name. I wouldn't think anything negative if someone told me they called their baby Lucifer.

I think it's a cruel name to call a child. Either that or someone had a very rough pregnancy thanks to the kick kick kicking of cloven hooves. Presumably 14 are merely decoys for the true anti-christ hidden among them?

If memory serves correctly, it was rejected by the Addams family along with "Mao" before they settled on Pubert as being more... bearable. I'm guessing the tv show accounts for popularity?

@Tombero

Well, at least it’s only 15 and not 666 of them. That would be a worry.

It's a great idea. Lucifer is the morning star, it's not necessarily satan. I don't think I could do it, but then I'm a bit if a wuss. The programme Lucifer is very popular and might have inspired them. I always wondered what his mum and dad were thinking. Smile

Maybe they are devout Satanists. Would you frown on the name Jesus @Beancounter1 ?

I'd have gone for Satan

It sums up the basic flaw in the concept of being given a name at birth and being expected to carry it for life.

Wouldn't it be much more sensible to be able to choose your name at 16/17? - you could choose to keep the one you're given, or you could choose something else entirely.

I doubt most people are naming their children Lucifer because it means morning star. Seems more for shock/edgy value than anything.

Can't see the point of it, so many edgy names to choose from that don't also remind people of "evil" ( no i don't believe) but maybe that's the point. To each their own.

The TV show Lucifer has probably made it more popular, though I've only watched one episode. Couldn't stand the man's smarmy expression.

They will likely have been registered as baby because they didn't come up with a name prior to the 6 week deadline for registration. You can change their first name in the first year. This way they can do the legal registration, but have longer to consider a name.
As for Seedy, I've heard it used by muslim families. Presumably it is a muslim name.

Erm, you can. Officially at 18 or any time thereafter. Socially earlier if you choose to.

But what did Lucifer actually do?
He brought knowledge. He gave Adam and Eve knowledge. God got all pissy about them having knowledge and threw lots of tantrums. And then religious groups throughout the centuries persecuted and silenced scientists.

There are lots of boys names which mean God or similar. He was the asshole. Lucifer... not so much.

Report
GatoradeMeBitch · 21/10/2021 23:56

It matters because other people may believe this. Names are a public thing - it is about how everyone else sees you.

Yes, but the kind of people who will believe a baby is a devil because he is named Lucifer are the kind of people who believe any and all things.

Most people would just be quietly amused. And maybe wonder if we're running out of good names, if we've had to start plundering the underworld for inspiration.

The only thing I don't like about it is it getting shortened to luci as a boy - yes I know names can be for any gender nowadays but just a personal preference I prefer luci or Lucy for a girl

I think Devil or Satan would be worse but no to Lucifer although it is a shame because it is actually a nice name.

Yes, I assumed it was a transliteration from another language/alphabet where the parents didn’t have English as a first language so didn’t know. I still think it’s bad on the part of the parents though - if you’re doing that you should at least Google it to make sure it doesn’t mean something bad in English, as seedy does.

Lucius, perhaps. Lucifer was suggested by my 'edgy' older child but we declined.

AliceinBorderland What's so awful about Teddy? On it's own for an adult, not great I grant you, but as a baby name for Edward or Theodore , it's fine!
My grandson is Theodore. Currently he's Teddy, Tedbear, Theo, Theodorable as he's a baby. When he's older he'll be Theo, Ted, Theodore, or Teddy! There are a lot worse names out there...!
