15 baby boys were given the name 'Lucifer' in 2020.

One of the reasons I love where I live is that o felt complete freedom to call my children whatever I liked, because it's so diverse around here that no one would raise an eyebrow.
When discussing names for DS(10), I said this to my DSD. She said thoughtfully "Well, there is a boy in my class called Tuna".
But apparently after the first week, no one really noticed that Tuna was an odd name.
In school and nursery my DC have had friends called Lalibela, Epiphany, Izan, Ziyad, Israel, Kenji, Zion, Zain and John.
I've met as adults Genghis, Twinkle, Shukrije.
I wouldn't bat an eye at Lucifer, a name I've always liked.
I think I'd draw the line at Chlamydia, however pretty it sounds.

Regardless of anything else it's going to get shortened to Lucy. Might as well have gone yhe whole hog and called them Sue. At least ther would be a song about it.

I like the name Lucifer. Don’t really see the big deal people are making about it, but then again I’m not religious. And no I haven’t watched the tv show, no idea what it is.

I wouldn't use Lucifer on a human. It does suit cats though! Phonetically it's a pleasant name with nice meaning, but the devil association has drowned out its use over time. It could be redeemable in the future if the media create more cultural references, but we're not there yet.

A lot of people are still aware of the association of Lucifer/ the devil and that will affect people's perceptions of the name and some people would let that affect the way they treat the child, some "just" with humour, but there is the potential for deep offence too.
That's a lot to willingly place on a child as they develop their sense of self.

Really though? Are people really that judgemental that they can’t accept a name for just being a name that someone liked without negative connotations? If so, that’s really sad.

The problem is that names do have associations, and this name is associated with the Antichrist. Therefore you are potentially burdening the poor kid from the start. Choose something else!

Not everyone is religious though! A lot of people see the bible as a load of rubbish. So it’s only really religious people who would have a problem, and aren’t they taught not to be judgemental?

I think it’s a beautiful name (and I’ve never watched the TV show).

Amber is a name which fell out of favour due to the novel 'Forever Amber' but has made a comeback in the last 15 years or so.
@toocold54, you're welcome. Melchior and Casper being the other 2 ! ( you never know when you might need this info ...!)
And here's a bit more info. They're not named in the Bible, at all. It was 800 years later before the names appeared in a different book, and stuck for some reason.

Not read much of the thread.

IMO

You can't call a baby Lucifer!!! WTF?!

That's just bizarre! And grim.

Any Satans in there? Adolf? Beelzebub? Pol-pot?

I hope they don't want/ need to get their child into a CofE or RC school in the future!!! One with religious criteria... Look out for the threads in a few years!

I taken aback at the majority of posters saying yeah cool fab! Still each to their own!

But still. State religion is Christian. Plenty of people go to church etc.

Imagine the reaction of tbh most people. Aw congratulations! Gorgeous baby! What's the name?

Lucifer

Cue bafflement and uncomfortable silence...

Bonkers.

@TuftyMarmoset

Baby always appears in the baby name stats as sadly some babies are never named - for example if they are stillborn.

I wouldn’t choose lucifer - just setting the kid up for ridicule and bad connotations imo

Really though? Are people really that judgemental that they can’t accept a name for just being a name that someone liked without negative connotations? If so, that’s really sad.

There are many churches where practices such as shunning continues, and they would be highly likely to take the name seriously. Not all churches are tolerant "Jesus loves you as you are" types. Maybe that's dodging a bullet, but also you wouldn't want to risk alienation with a potential "my mummy says I can't play with you because you're a devil child"

It's not a name that I'd fancy having to explain to a stranger at a call centre if they suspect it's a prank.

At best, I wouldn't want the first impression to be mired by someone having to get over themselves and reminding themselves to be a better person.

If you're an adult with a more alternative lifestyle changing your name, that's a concious choice, but it's a lot to impose on a child finding their place in the world and expecting to trail-blaze through centuries of predjuice.

Lucifer - the bringer of light.

Or if you're into old victorian songs - pack up your troubles in your old kit bag
Bring me a lucifer to light my fag...

Striking a match - also a bringer of light.

Jesus ;) Knickers in a twist much.

I used to know a kid called Damien. He was an absolute horror too - really lived up to his name, unfortunately. My mother was frightened of him and I never quite understood the depth of the reasons why; it was only when I was older that I connected her religion to his name and behavioural issues. Grin

Nobody seems to wet themselves at the name Cain - the first ever murderer who killed his brother.

Do go find the true meaning of Lucifer.
