15 baby boys were given the name 'Lucifer' in 2020.

I wouldn't use it because I believe in God, but really, it's just a name!

@Notjustanymum, yes, thinking about it I’m sure I’ve heard of the odd Adolf in newspaper articles.

I know a Benito. That raised a few eyebrows with Italians.

Lilith is great. Even Lucien has a nice meaning.

Honestly I'd rather be called that than Jaizmyne or something.

Lucifer sorry!

@MrsTerryPratchett I particularly feel for the children registered as Micheal (8), Pheonix (7), and Pheobe (19), among all the other alternative spellings 😬

@HollowTalk

I've reached the point where it wouldn't bother me as long as it was spelled correctly.

This made me smile. I'm in absolutely the same camp.

My favourite one ever has to be 'Airwreka'. How is that poor child ever going to make an appointment on the phone without spelling it out?

As I mentioned on the other thread - a father who named his kid Lucifer was on the radio saying he thought it was "unique". Aside from the fact that it clearly isn't - why the fuck does everyone have to strive to give their kid no other kid has (or spell it in such a stupid way no-one can guess how to) - why? What's it for?

TuftyMarmoset · 22/10/2021 17:14

Agreed @daimbarsatemydogsbone. I’ve never met someone with a contrived unique name/spelling and thought ‘this must be a very special individual’, I just judge their parents.

It's not unique to misspell things. It's incredibly common. I mean usual BTW no comment on class.

Hi, just logged back on.
To the poster who asked, I wouldn't name a child Jesus either. I think it might be used in Spanish-speaking countries though?
At least Satan is not on the list!

Yes Jesus is common in Spanish speaking countries. Pronounced Hay- zus ( apologies if not quite right).
I agree with op - Lucifer is awful. If they are fans of Tom Ellis, why not Tom or Ellis??!! ( That's a joke BTW but reminded me of when Victoria Beckham was expecting and it was said she liked Santa for a girl, as her favourite shopping area was in Santa Monica. A more obvious girl's name screamed out to me but hey ho !!)

Angel is also a reasonably common Spanish first name. While we were still in the au pair stage I really wanted to have an au pair named Jesus or Angel so that I could say that the DC were with Jesus or that an Angel was watching over them. Grin Unfortunately none of them even made the short list.

Ex DH had a cousin named Angel, her mother was Italian. When she got a bit older she told people it was Angela and her mother was horrified. She did eventually accept that it was simply an anglicised version of the name but I dont think she was ever happy about it.

Yes in Spanish speaking countries you have Jesus and Angel and also Xavier which translates as Saviour. My grandmother was called "Maria of the angels", that was literally her name, shortened to Angel.

DD7 is convinced a child at the ice skating rink in Sheffield was called Satan. We have argued repeatedly over the probability of this.

Oh I really wanted to called DS Xavier but ex vetoed on the grounds that it was pretentious and DS would hate me later. Ironically I now have a teen who would absolutely LOVE to have the initial X to confirm his credentials as speshul and youneek and difrunt. Hmm

Lack imagination there.
MyCaul, Feenix and Feebe would be much more unique.

Might name my next child Loose-Aoife after all. It's double barrelled and everything.

@Beancounter1 I know of twin boys called Lucifer and Rupert!

Report

I love the name Lucifer!
And think quite often if I had a boy I would have wanted to call him that (not sure I would have gone through with it though) and I wouldn’t say I’m ‘cool’ I just like the name and I’m not religious.
I don’t associate any names with religion like Noah, Joseph, Mohammad etc the only one I associate it Jesus but I wouldn’t use that because I don’t like the name.

I don’t know if Balthazar has a religious connection but I love that too.

@toocold54, Balthazar was one of the 3 wise men. It's got a nice sound to it. Lucifer does too - I just couldn't name a child Lucifer, but I think Balthazar is pretty cool.
