To take a pet to a non-pet holiday cottage if it will not go on to the premises?

I think this should be fine but need perspective.

Our dog does not like sleeping anywhere except his bed or the car. He's happy at the dog sitters but that's not an option.

We've had a spontaneous look for a short break next week abd found a perfect 3 night cottage except it's not dog friendly.

The dog wouldn't sleep in the property anyway, he only settles in the car and is very happy in there.

The property has designated parking that is slightly off from the property, so he'd never be actually in the garden or house. We'll be out of the property most of time anyway exploring and finding dog friendly pubs.

I can't see any reason why an owner would object to this, but very aware that if there's neighbourly eyes keeping an understandable look-our, the optics aren't great, even though we're not technically breaking any rules.

I'm considering emailing before booking to ask permission but concerned that the word "dog" may create a reaction without the true scenario being realised, and we lose the property.

AIBU to take him anyway and chance it?

No.

Either find a dog friendly property (my preferred option) or you get kennels/sitter. Anything else is cruel.

bunnybopbop · 21/10/2021 22:28

What a fucking awful dog owner you are.

You shouldn't have dogs.

Spidey66 · 21/10/2021 22:29

Fair enough OP realises she is unreasonable

HalzTangz · 21/10/2021 22:30

@ellyoctober

You can see the car from the property.
So you are going to stay awake 24/7 then.

If I saw a dog left for any length of time I'd be reporting it to dog wardens, it's freezing at night at this time of year (that's as bad for a dog as it it when a dog is in the car in summer).
Search a bit harder and find a dog friendly place or cancel your impromptu get away until you can find a dog friendly place

MrsSkylerWhite · 21/10/2021 22:32

That’s horrible. It’s really cold already here.

ellyoctober · 21/10/2021 22:37

@liveforsummer

Yes we've done it before when he hasn't settled in previous dog friendly accommodation.

But had he truly settled all night in the car or have you just no longer been disturbed?

Feel like that's getting a bit existential Grin

When we've had him in it previously, it's because he stirs avd is unsettled in the tent or in the holiday accommodation (pet friendly). As he's so content in it normally, we decided to try it (when camping, sometimes a teenager sleeps with him too and confirms he sleep as soundly as at home). Wgen we've been in holiday accommodation, there's no sign of unsettlement wgen we wake him in the morning. Avd he's always in there for a lesser time thab he sleeps at home.

There's also a cabin heater/cooler in there to cope with the weather. I know a few people have mentioned the cooler weather now, so that's not a concern.

But that we're doing it now anyway, already made different smaller - day trip plans

Apologies for typos. My eyes get tired at this time of night

You are not good dog owners.

HalzTangz · 21/10/2021 22:41

@ellyoctober

I can't see his bed from my bedroom at home, it's a few doors away. It's not too dissimilar.
It's completely different. At home he's in his bed inside the same house.

In a car he is at the mercy of being stolen whilst you sleep

liveforsummer · 21/10/2021 22:42

But it's hugely different when camping and you're right there (which a dog knows) and the campsite is dog friendly so literally only in there to sleep and the rest of the time chilling in the evening sitting outside and at dog is there while you're cooking breakfast with the family AND a family member is in there with him. In a holiday cottage you aren't going to be sitting in the car at 10pm rather than chilling in the living room in front of the fire. You've obviously realised that now but are still arguing for it?!

I'm not arguing for it though?

I've listened, taken on board, changed plans.

And I'll only look for pet friendly accommodation in the future for full access for him.

We get requests like this all the time, dog will only stay in the car, won't ever set foot in the building. Changeover day - dog hair in bed, on sofa and poo in garden.
No no no no. They also get billed for it.
We can't then say the property is no dogs for those with allergies!

Marvellousmadness · 21/10/2021 22:53

Poor dog.
Happy you changed plans because you were being VU.

AlwaysLatte · 21/10/2021 22:53

So you'll feed him in the car/on the street, as well as leave him in a car all night? What happens if he whines? You won't hear him. And open to dog theft. This is bonkers and hopefully made up.

@ellyoctober despite the fact that you have listened, considered opinions and now changed plans this thread WILL KEEP GOING

IT WILL GO FOREVER AND EVER

I predict the next 5 posts will liken you to Hitler, accuse you of dog abuse and hell nuking the commonwealth because they will not READ THE F*Cking thread

AlwaysLatte · 21/10/2021 22:58

Oh sorry, I saw that you changed your mind. Good call!

careerchangeperhaps · 21/10/2021 23:03

Wouldn't the dog be cold in the car? It's 4°C outside at the moment and I'm in the South West which is generally warmer than most other parts of the UK.

I'm not sure you can say that anyway, because by law you have to accept guide dogs.

Not going to place any bets against that! Grin

You are very unkind to your dog.it is not the cold( dogs can manage in cold temperature, unless it is a "toy dog")that bothers me with your attitude towards your dog,It is the amount of time the poor creature has to spend alone in a car.If I would see this, I would report you to the RSPCA.Has the dog water? You should be ashamed of yourself to even concider this.

londonrach · 22/10/2021 06:37

Yabu. You can't do this... Poor dog and the cottage is no pets! Next visitor could have allergy to dogs ...

Whatiswrongwithmyknee · 22/10/2021 08:08

That could be said of any school/workplace/transport/Café/pub/restaurant/shop place outside of your home and friends visiting your home. I'd be amazed if anyone is SO affected

It could be said and it is a problem for those of us with allergies. If this amazes you I think you maybe just don't know much about how severe allergies can be. People regularly bring animal hair 'to me' and trigger my asthma. The dander is on everything they touch including the clothes owners wear.

DarlingFell · 22/10/2021 08:21

You cannot leave your dog in a car overnight. It’s bloody cruel. The temperature has really dropped overnight recently, one of my dogs tapped me on the shoulder in the night asking to come under the covers, it was chilly. Your desire for a holiday does not trump your dog’s right to a warm, safe and secure bed Hmm

DarlingFell · 22/10/2021 08:31

That’s not true. I wish people wouldn’t make incorrect statements on SM as ‘facts’. I have two non toy dogs. They feel the cold, because they are warm blooded mammals. Large short hair dogs freeze to death, they get hypothermia. Their body temperatures are higher than humans but they feel the cold like any other homeotherm.
