To take a pet to a non-pet holiday cottage if it will not go on to the premises?

I think this should be fine but need perspective.

Our dog does not like sleeping anywhere except his bed or the car. He's happy at the dog sitters but that's not an option.

We've had a spontaneous look for a short break next week abd found a perfect 3 night cottage except it's not dog friendly.

The dog wouldn't sleep in the property anyway, he only settles in the car and is very happy in there.

The property has designated parking that is slightly off from the property, so he'd never be actually in the garden or house. We'll be out of the property most of time anyway exploring and finding dog friendly pubs.

I can't see any reason why an owner would object to this, but very aware that if there's neighbourly eyes keeping an understandable look-our, the optics aren't great, even though we're not technically breaking any rules.

I'm considering emailing before booking to ask permission but concerned that the word "dog" may create a reaction without the true scenario being realised, and we lose the property.

AIBU to take him anyway and chance it?

I probs wouldn't do it but are cages really any better?

BoredZelda · 22/10/2021 18:39

You can see the car from the property.

When you’re sleeping?

RockyReef · 22/10/2021 18:39

We have a holiday cottage on our farm, it's no pets allowed. I would be pretty cross if someone turned up with a dog they kept in the car the whole time. It's not the sleeping outside thing, as dogs can be fine with that if they are used to it even in freezing temperatures, but what are you going to do with the dog when you come back for dinner in the evenings or on a rainy afternoon?

Email if you want although I strongly suspect the answer will be no, but don't just turn up and keep your poor dog in the car all the time you're not out of the holiday cottage, that's really not on.

ellyoctober · 22/10/2021 18:42

@PinkStink

Ah well. You could take a picture of your dog snuggled up next to the fire at home surrounded by treats and balls and still the naysayers will trudge in shitting on the thread having not read it.
@PinkStink

He's already fast asleep after his poached chicken Breast supper and a 3 mile walk around the local park.

Gosh know how tired he'd be after 3 times that in a hilly area of the country and a pub supper!

He'd be snug in his warm bed in a heat programmed environment. Will ventilation.

Poor deprived mutt

But as I may have mentionedWink, we're not going...

A lovely fair response, tyvm.

Which you'd been first responder Thanks

Yabvu
To subject a dog to car.
You know at some point the dog will be inside!
It’s selfish, some people choose non pet accommodation due to asthma or just don’t want to sleep where a dog sleeps.
YABU.

MermaidinJeans · 22/10/2021 18:53

Just... No.

HomeSliceKnowsBest · 22/10/2021 18:58

I'd sooner you smuggled the poor dog in the poor unsuspecting owner's property than left him in the car. Both of these acts are low, but the dog left to freeze/get stolen alone in the car is despicable.

BasiliskStare · 22/10/2021 18:58

@ellyoctober - good decision - we only go to dog friendly places - it's more difficult but it works Flowers

Thanks for RTFT.

It was just a last minute opportunity and I was positing whether it'd work.

And it's not right, and so it's not on as you have seen. Smile

I know the OP has decided against it - all good.

Just coming back to say that we have sometimes taken our pets to 'no pets' holiday lets, but only if the owner has happily agreed to make an exception in advance after a discussion. They are indoors when we are, not out, too. We offer a damage deposit or extra cleaning fee but this has never been taken up nor needed and we have always been welcomed back. Some cottages are dog friendly but not pet friendly - ie the owners will only accept dogs, not cats or other pets.

I read something funny on a holiday cottage booking site recently. A guest had written a review complaining about certain things, to which the owner replied pointing out that the guest had taken a canary in a cage into the cottage for its holiday without permission!

PepsiMaxCherry · 22/10/2021 19:10

YABVU. If the homeowner has specified no pets then it's for a reason. My son is allergic to dogs so I'd be really pissed off if that was my house and he had a reaction after you stayed.

RootinandTootin · 22/10/2021 19:10

I don’t think there is anything wrong with leaving the dog in the car, I’m presuming he’s snug. You know what your dog is happy with and as pp have said some dogs live outside. I do think though you should mention it to the owner it might be an insurance thing.

Babyroobs · 22/10/2021 19:15

Blimey, I wouldn't be able to sleep knowing my dog was at risk of being stolen.

WTAFhappened123 · 22/10/2021 19:20

What shite pet owner! No DONT do that Angry

Teatotal2 · 22/10/2021 19:20

That is outside, not stuck in a car!
It is an absolutely ridiculous and selfish suggestion of OP to do this for sake of saving a few quid on a proper dog friendly break or finding them an alternative place to stay while they go, minus dog!

Teatotal2 · 22/10/2021 19:22

Sorry my post applies to this♤
There's a big difference living outdoors to being stuck overnight and prolonged periods in a car ffs!

Have you tried reading the thread?
1forAll74 · 22/10/2021 19:31

Best ask the owners, and be upfront about all things.I assume the dog won't bark his head off all night, if he can't see you from the car.

keeptheaspidistra · 22/10/2021 19:37

What a horrible idea. Your poor dog. How much time must it have had to spend in the car alone for this to become its accustomed norm.

Justfortonight999 · 22/10/2021 19:40

OP you could run a masterclass in how to respond to messages politely and calmly and defuse upset. So impressed. 👍🏻

ellyoctober · 22/10/2021 19:40

I think fill think I come back to this after he's been in the car Grin
