To take a pet to a non-pet holiday cottage if it will not go on to the premises?

I think this should be fine but need perspective.

Our dog does not like sleeping anywhere except his bed or the car. He's happy at the dog sitters but that's not an option.

We've had a spontaneous look for a short break next week abd found a perfect 3 night cottage except it's not dog friendly.

The dog wouldn't sleep in the property anyway, he only settles in the car and is very happy in there.

The property has designated parking that is slightly off from the property, so he'd never be actually in the garden or house. We'll be out of the property most of time anyway exploring and finding dog friendly pubs.

I can't see any reason why an owner would object to this, but very aware that if there's neighbourly eyes keeping an understandable look-our, the optics aren't great, even though we're not technically breaking any rules.

I'm considering emailing before booking to ask permission but concerned that the word "dog" may create a reaction without the true scenario being realised, and we lose the property.

AIBU to take him anyway and chance it?

Nope. Just literally read OPs posts with the filter function.

PooBearnow · 22/10/2021 17:34

@ellyoctober you can not leave a dog in a car. Even if you can see it. you aren't going to stay awake all night. Absolutely not.

JerryGiraffe · 22/10/2021 17:38

I am going to assume that you are joking OP, this the only reasonable explanation for what you're suggesting. In case it isn't a joke, no you can't do that and I struggle to see how anyone can possibly think any part if it is acceptable, fair or decent, sorry

clarehhh · 22/10/2021 17:43

Totally unacceptable and I am a dog lover. Future bookings may be allergic to dogs. You will get caught out why risk it!

TakesTheCake · 22/10/2021 17:43

Outrageously unreasonable, yes.

Kittysummer · 22/10/2021 17:46

Speechless. If I was to write something it’s not going to be very nice.

PurpleOkapi · 22/10/2021 17:46

WTF? No, you can't make your dog sleep in the car for three days! Especially when the car is parked a block or more away from where you are. You have no idea what the weather might be like. And you're not going to spend every waking moment out and about. Are you going to just hang out in the car the rest of the time, and only go back to the room to shower and sleep?

Jamc93 · 22/10/2021 17:46

YABU

Just no! Similar to other people's comments, it's insane and completely irresponsible to do that to your dog. However the fact you are only responding to comments to justify your decision and completely ignoring the rest telling you how unreasonable you're being, tells me you have already decided to do it regardless.

Rosiebrown1 · 22/10/2021 17:48

I just can’t believe anyone would suggest this as an option 😔 it makes me sad for the dog

MollyMinniesMum · 22/10/2021 17:49

They will object, don’t do
it

Owl55 · 22/10/2021 17:55

Be honest , do you really intend to not let the dog in the cottage during your break? I’m afraid I don’t belt you! Leave it with a friend , YABU

Dnaltocs · 22/10/2021 17:57

No no no.

Dnaltocs · 22/10/2021 17:58

Just can’t believe this is a genuine enquiry. Poor dog.

Animood · 22/10/2021 18:00

Won't the dog be cold at this time of year!

ilovechocolate07 · 22/10/2021 18:00

I'm struggling with understanding that you plan on leaving you pet trapped inside a car all night.

notoldjustpastyoung · 22/10/2021 18:03

There must be plenty of cottages that are dog friendly. ~Why go for one that is not. Not much fun for the dog.

purplebunny2012 · 22/10/2021 18:09

So you'll be picking up all his fur before you leave? There's no way you'd get it all and then they have a guest that's allergic stay after you.

MumMRM · 22/10/2021 18:10

Basically if you are OK to treat a dog like that, you should not have a dog, full stop! So the dog wakes at 8am & you will be with it all the time from 8am til bedtime at 10pm? I doubt it, so it will be left in the car! Disgusted!!!

purplebunny2012 · 22/10/2021 18:11

Darn, I have to read the OP properly! No, you can't leave your dog in the car for the whole stay, and if you relented and let him on the property you then have the issue I already raised

ellyoctober · 22/10/2021 18:17

All hail to Mumsnet Daily for reinvigorating this. Sad

PinkStink · 22/10/2021 18:21

Ah well. You could take a picture of your dog snuggled up next to the fire at home surrounded by treats and balls and still the naysayers will trudge in shitting on the thread having not read it.

No this is not ok, I am a holiday cottage owner and do not accept dogs. I wouldn’t allow it.

1ittlegreen · 22/10/2021 18:35

No one has yet mentioned the smell. The dog would have deffo been in the property at some point if OP was going to use the cottage. OP was banking on this despite her arguments otherwise.

A dog shook its wet coat within a few metres of me the other day and left the worst smell ever on my jeans. All that slobber, fur and smell potentially in someone's beautiful home. Makes me feel sick.

KayKayWat · 22/10/2021 18:37

How would he breathe without risk of rain coming in window?
