Aibu about DD and calling 111

Sorry for long post - Am I just over reacting? DD started with a cold on Wednesday (runny nose, temperature etc.) by Friday night it had turned into vomiting and bad cough. We monitored her over weekend, and no improvement. Phoned Dr on Monday and was told just a virus but Dr was very funny about why we hadn't taken her for a PCR test. (We had done a lateral flow as soon as she seemed under the weather that was negative). Dr was unaware that guidance says only take under 5s if absolutely necessary or Dr says to. Took her for PCR which is negative. We've been giving her fluids but she's refused all food since Friday afternoon. We've tried juice squash, smoothies, only thing she will have is milk or ice lollies. DH is concerned but not as much as me! I'm very worried but I don't want to over react.

We've been giving Calpol and ibuprofen but they don't seem to be doing anything.
Symptoms include (Dr was made aware of all of these):
Cough
Temperature
Refusing food (even ice cream/chocolate/crisps etc)
Runny nose
Ear pain (she keeps rubbing her ear and flinches when you touch that side of her head)
Sore throat (won't eat anything, when she gets distracted and eats a snack she is sick when she tries to swallow and will start crying)
Vomiting
Mottled skin
Very clingy
Cry is unusual, very high pitched.
Not active or interested in doing things.

I'm worried as she hasn't eaten since Thursday and it's now Tuesday. Do I phone 111?? Do I phone Dr again? Or am I panicing over nothing??

Yes. Especially with those smptoms listed at the end. Call them now or go to A&E.

MindyStClaire · 19/10/2021 20:37

I would want her seen, so GP in the morning at a min but the mottled skin and unusual cry would make me consider out of hours or A&E tonight. I'm not medical though.

Incidentally, where did you see that advice about under 5s? I have a 3yo and a 1yo who have both had countless PCR tests due to coughs and tempteratures, I didn't think their guidance for testing was any different.

bloodywhitecat · 19/10/2021 20:37

I'd be headed for A&E with mottled skin, high temp and a high pitched cry, they are flags for meningitis.

Cheeseballer · 19/10/2021 20:38

In fact I'd just go to A&E. The skin and cry on top of everything else. Just take her now

Coronawireless · 19/10/2021 20:38

Or sepsis. And severe dehydration.

Bluebubbletrouble · 19/10/2021 20:38

Your not over reacting at all imo. Listen to your gut instinct. How old is she OP?

FleasInMyKnees · 19/10/2021 20:38

She needs a hospital trip, hope she is ok.

bloodywhitecat · 19/10/2021 20:40

Don't wait until morning, she needs assessing tonight.

Calvinlookingforhobbes · 19/10/2021 20:40

A & e or 111

AudTheDeepMinded · 19/10/2021 20:40

I would go to A and E, the last three symptoms were signs of severe infection in my four-week-old son. He was admitted for a week and had IV antibiotics for a kidney infection. Better to be safe than sorry with small ones (Oh, and he'd seen THREE gps who had missed his symptoms in the week leading to admission, we took him to hospital in the end as was so worried, trust your instincts).

SRK16 · 19/10/2021 20:41

A&E or at the very least 111.

foxgoosefinch · 19/10/2021 20:41

Mottled skin and unusual cry - go to A&E ASAP please OP. Bette to be safe than sorry.

Blackopal · 19/10/2021 20:41

How old? How high is the temp?

Take her to A and E, at the least call 111.

rubyslippers · 19/10/2021 20:41

A&E
The high pitched cry and not eating are worrying in addition to everything you’ve mentioned

Brandysnapfoxylady · 19/10/2021 20:42

She's 2 x

Also just saw she hasn’t eaten for days - get her seen right now OP, at the very least she is probably very dehydrated with low blood sugar.

foxgoosefinch · 19/10/2021 20:43

You are DEFINITELY not overreacting by taking her to A&E by the way - 111 once called a blue light ambulance for my 2 y o when she has severe tonsillitis.

8dpwoah · 19/10/2021 20:44

Another vote for A&E here. We had mottled skin without so many other symptoms and 111 sent paramedics for that who in turn said they'd take us in if we didn't feel reassured (we did, and felt a bit silly as we'd assumed 111 would point us to the walk-in or similar!).

The funny cry and mottled skin are things that stick out to me as red flags so I'd just pack up and go to A&E, I'm sure they won't be cross with anyone taking a poorly small child.

georgarina · 19/10/2021 20:44

NHS website says mottled skin, unusual cry and change in behaviour means call 999

winningforhim · 19/10/2021 20:44

A and E, please please go. Better to be safe than sorry. Hope she is okay, wee soul Thanks

It's only recently changed in Wales, don't know about anywhere else in UK. It says on the Welsh Gov website.

Take her to a and e. No doctor will think you’ve done the wrong thing taking her to be looked at in person.

Pencilandpaper · 19/10/2021 20:45

Gosh at 2, yes take her to A&E.

SleepingStandingUp · 19/10/2021 20:45

Def A&E op. I'm amazed with the ear thing you haven't been given a dose of basic antibiotics, at best it sounds like an ear and throat infection. That isn't going to just go away.

Rainbowcake88 · 19/10/2021 20:45

My 3 yo DD was like this, as soon as I saw the mottled skin I phoned 999. Paramedics took her straight in as she had low oxygen and suspected sepsis. It was so scary but turned out to be a virus (not covid) best to get her checked immediately. Mottled skin is not a good sign! Good luck x
