Aibu about DD and calling 111

Sorry for long post - Am I just over reacting? DD started with a cold on Wednesday (runny nose, temperature etc.) by Friday night it had turned into vomiting and bad cough. We monitored her over weekend, and no improvement. Phoned Dr on Monday and was told just a virus but Dr was very funny about why we hadn't taken her for a PCR test. (We had done a lateral flow as soon as she seemed under the weather that was negative). Dr was unaware that guidance says only take under 5s if absolutely necessary or Dr says to. Took her for PCR which is negative. We've been giving her fluids but she's refused all food since Friday afternoon. We've tried juice squash, smoothies, only thing she will have is milk or ice lollies. DH is concerned but not as much as me! I'm very worried but I don't want to over react.

We've been giving Calpol and ibuprofen but they don't seem to be doing anything.
Symptoms include (Dr was made aware of all of these):
Cough
Temperature
Refusing food (even ice cream/chocolate/crisps etc)
Runny nose
Ear pain (she keeps rubbing her ear and flinches when you touch that side of her head)
Sore throat (won't eat anything, when she gets distracted and eats a snack she is sick when she tries to swallow and will start crying)
Vomiting
Mottled skin
Very clingy
Cry is unusual, very high pitched.
Not active or interested in doing things.

I'm worried as she hasn't eaten since Thursday and it's now Tuesday. Do I phone 111?? Do I phone Dr again? Or am I panicing over nothing??

Glad you're taking her in OP. Mottled skin and high pitched cry is worrying.

HollowTalk · 19/10/2021 22:19

I think taking her to hospital is the right thing. I really hope she's okay.

Thundercats77 · 19/10/2021 22:25

That's must have been awful for you.

PanicBuyingSprouts · 19/10/2021 22:29

Let us know how you get on @Brandysnapfoxylady Thanks

Atla · 19/10/2021 22:32

With those symptoms I think taking her to hospital tonight is the right thing to do.

I'm pretty horrified at your GP not arranging for a sick child to be seen - she is so young and it sounds like she's been really poorly.

Flowers let us know how she is OP.

Suzanne999 · 19/10/2021 22:39

111 or GP. Small child vomiting and not eating / drinking much = dehydration. Probably viral but could be a secondary ear infection?
I think Thursday to Tuesday with no improvement is long enough.
I hope your daughter feels better soon.

Suzanne999 · 19/10/2021 22:42

Hadn’t read your post about the unusual cry. That’s concerning. A&E. If there’s a rash say you want her checked for sepsis. You should be told a sepsis protocol is being followed. If not, push for it. Don’t be scared of offending anyone. Probably not serious but investigate for the worst, hope for the best.

Buggeredpelvicfloor2013 · 19/10/2021 22:45

Like another poster here, we had this and it was severe bacterial pneumonia. Very, very close to turning into something worse in our case - our DD was 2 as well and I kept getting fobbed off by the doctors. Please, take your little one to A&E tonight. My daughter had to have a spinal to confirm it wasn't meningitis as she started with a rash after 5 days of the same symptoms you listed & 4 doctors trips of being fobbed off as a first time mum. Please, please, a&e now x

GrandmaAli · 19/10/2021 22:48

You can call 111 but they will probably tell you to take her to A&E.
I'm worried about the earache, mottled skin and not eating, especially fluids!!!

Please keep us updated as & when possible!!
I hope she recovers soon. x

Whoopsmahoot · 19/10/2021 22:49

Def 111 as minimum.

GrandmaAli · 19/10/2021 22:50

Press a glass against her rash. If the rash doesn't disappear, it could be meningitis!!
Especially with the high pitched screaming etc!
Definitely A&E!!!

bettertimesarecomingnow · 19/10/2021 22:51

Hope she is ok OP x

Ileflottante · 19/10/2021 22:51

I would. Sounds like she has a tonsillitis/ear-type infection and she might benefit from a course antimicrobial assistance, (amoxicillin or Pen V) as she’s still struggling.

Ileflottante · 19/10/2021 22:55

Definitely get her seen and in paeds A&E if advised. Mottled skin can sometimes just be caused by a fever, so don’t panic too much about that. I know there’s some panicky posts on here shouting ‘meningitis’, and of course we should all be mindful of that, but she’s been ill for so long that it’s probably unlikely.

grace1991 · 19/10/2021 22:59

Mottled skin is infection!!!! Take her now

ElvisPresleyHadABaby · 19/10/2021 23:00

Definitely A and E, hope all is alright.

LibrariesGiveUsPower45321 · 19/10/2021 23:04

Mottled skin = A&E ASAP

Doctors can miss things, or mild viruses can turn into worse infections, so it’s always best to get checked again if things get worse.

Hope she’s ok.

Redsquirrel5 · 19/10/2021 23:15

I don’t think people are shouting meningitis but time is of the essence if it is and therefore it is vey important to rule it out. Meningitis rash will not recede when I glass is moved over it but my niece went to bed after being a bit off colour her older sister checked on her and my sister went up to check on her and her sister said mum she has a few spots. That is when my sister took her to hospital. Within 36 hrs she had a severe rash and on life support. Within 48 hrs her capillaries and her veins had collapsed. Time is of the essence and taking her for a second opinion when the other doctor hadn’t actually seen her is vital.

It might be a viral rash but it might not. A high pitched cry isn’t good. My daughter5 had fluid on her brain. So did my niece 7.

I am not trying to panic people but if we hadn’t taken our children they might not be here. I aim to inform people I don’t mean to frighten people but sometimes the mother’s instinct is right and this mum is worried and has taken her daughter. The Consultant at the hospital even said mother’s instinct is often right.

I hope you little girl recovers soon.

BlueberrySugar · 19/10/2021 23:16

Another one suffering A&E.

I hope she is okay.

There is definitely something doing the rounds.
My DS who is 2 started with a blocked nose yesterday, was sick last night into early this morning and now has a runny nose and chesty cough.

PCR negative.

BlueberrySugar · 19/10/2021 23:16

Suggesting**

clockover · 19/10/2021 23:19

Mottled skin has also been reported In covid cases!

I hope your DD is ok OP

lynntheyresexpeople · 19/10/2021 23:20

I hope she's ok x

Glitterybug · 19/10/2021 23:21

Poor baby definitely take her in. I took my son in once when he was a baby with mottled skin, cough, lethargic etc, the doctors at A&E said it was a cold but said if in doubt they'd rather see a child who isn't seriously ill, than not see one who is. So nobody will think anything of it if you go get her seen.
