Should we keep the money we found?

This morning at soft play Ds found four £1 at the bottom of a slide. He was really excited but I explained how it wasn't ours and it had fallen out of someone's pocket and we handed it in to the reception. Unaware of the £4, on the way home DH found £100 in rolled up notes. He stood there for a while and didn't see anyone looking for it. I feel like it's good karma and we should keep it. My husband thinks we should give it to the police. (We are low income so feels like a lot of money)
So
YABU - you should practice what you preach to your son, hand it in.
YANBU - enjoy the good karma and keep it

Is it true that if you hand it in to the police and it isn’t claimed you get it back? If so, I would do that. At least you’ve tried and if you get it back you can spend it with a clear conscience.

Stoppochoco · 18/10/2021 19:16

I'd hand it into the police, you can claim it back after 28 days if no one claims it.
It would bother me to keep it, in case it was someone's rent money, or something like that.

frogsbreath · 18/10/2021 19:17

Always assume someone saw you and behave as you should not as you want to.

Hand it in and enjoy further good karma

Brollywasntneededafterall · 18/10/2021 19:18

My ds 20 odd years ago found a fiver.. I said we had to hand it in. It wasn't claimed and he got to keep it.
Recently ds 12 and his mate found 200 quid... Asked at the gate they found it at. Woman checked her cctv and it was the ndn. He gave ds and his friend 20 quid each! Honestly a good lesson both times.. Hand it in op...

Knittedfairies · 18/10/2021 19:19

How do you know whoever lost it isn't on a low income as well? Hand it in.

SleepingStandingUp · 18/10/2021 19:19

It seems hypercritical to give in £4 2+which likely no one will notice / think to ask for but you're happy to pocket £100 because the Universe likes you. It doesn't. That money is also someone's money. What if they're low income too?

HeartsAndClubs · 18/10/2021 19:20

IMO it’s wrong to keep anything more than £5.

TheChiefJo · 18/10/2021 19:20

This.
XenoBitch · 18/10/2021 19:21

YABU
That £100 could have also belonged to someone low income like yourselves.

WhoWearsShortShorts · 18/10/2021 19:21

There's no such thing as karma. The right thing to do is to hand it in

Firesidefox · 18/10/2021 19:21

I would keep it

SirensofTitan · 18/10/2021 19:21

There's no such thing as karma, hand the money in or do a suitably vague local Facebook post to find the owner

SD1978 · 18/10/2021 19:23

You logic makes absolutely no sense. You'd hand in £4 - an insignificant amount to teach your son about honesty, but £100 is fair game? Karma doesn't exist. It should be handed in to the police, and as others have said, you can claim it back if no one else does. If that was your £100.......you'd be happy if someone kept it for 'karma'......doubt it

Tal45 · 18/10/2021 19:24

if it was £5 of £10 I'd give it to charity but for that amount I would hand it in.

Pinkginlover · 18/10/2021 19:24

YABU
That money could belong to someone who is also on low income. It could be rent money or all the money they had to feed their family and pay bills until next pay day.
Hand it in.

Brollywasntneededafterall · 18/10/2021 19:24

I think you would feel bad if you kept it. A work colleague gloated she found 60 quid one Easter week end... I told her it could have been money for dc's easter eggs and she should have handed it in (found in a shop) lowered my opinion of her tbh...

Muchtoomuchtodo · 18/10/2021 19:25

Definitely hand it in.

kurtney · 18/10/2021 19:25

If this is for real, no you shouldn't keep it. You think the universe sent you £100 because you handed in £4? Give me a break 😆

The actual hypocrisy and twisting of the circumstances to somehow convince yourself that you should keep it! Bloody hell. Either keep everything you find or none of it, but don't try and make it you've somehow done a good deed and forces beyond your control are rewarding you for it.

girlmom21 · 18/10/2021 19:26

You're on a low income but that money might have been someone's pension money.
Hand it in.

Gazelda · 18/10/2021 19:26

You taught your DS a good lesson.

Lead by example.

Neighneigh · 18/10/2021 19:26

We found £80 once in a street in South East London. Being an ex-catholic my DH insisted we took it to the police station where I think they actually laughed at us....but low and behold a month later we got a note to collect it because it hadn't been claimed. I think it actually went towards a washing machine because we were about 22 then but anyhoo the point is if you hand it to the police you'll get it back guilt free.

SheWoreYellow · 18/10/2021 19:27

Could be granny’s pension. I’d post it on a local Facebook group (don’t give the amount or exact location) or hand in to the police if they accept it (some don’t any more).

FleasInMyKnees · 18/10/2021 19:27

Of course you hand it in, why do you think you should keep it.

clockover · 18/10/2021 19:28

You think the universe sent you £100 because you handed in £4? Give me a break 😆

This ^

Like WTF

LorenzoVonMatterhorn · 18/10/2021 19:28

Hand it in.
