Should we keep the money we found?

This morning at soft play Ds found four £1 at the bottom of a slide. He was really excited but I explained how it wasn't ours and it had fallen out of someone's pocket and we handed it in to the reception. Unaware of the £4, on the way home DH found £100 in rolled up notes. He stood there for a while and didn't see anyone looking for it. I feel like it's good karma and we should keep it. My husband thinks we should give it to the police. (We are low income so feels like a lot of money)
So
YABU - you should practice what you preach to your son, hand it in.
YANBU - enjoy the good karma and keep it

By the way, this really isn’t Karma!

qualitygirl · 18/10/2021 20:28

Karma is a bitch @Exboltqueen and what goes around comes around. Etc etc

If I found 100 I would hand it in for sure! If I lost 100 I would love if it was handed in rather than taken.

I always hand in money I find and funnily enough whenever I lose money/things in public they are always handed in.

Discwriter · 18/10/2021 20:31

I pick up quite a lot of money, quite often. Think the area must be terrible, must be drug money. I always hand it in at the local police station and collect it after 28 days. Really hope if it's someone on a low income, they will check with the station.

notanothertakeaway · 18/10/2021 20:32

@Exboltqueen

I know it is the right thing to do. It just seemed too much of a coincidence to happen on the same day. I'm doubtful we will get it back though its probably drug money due to the area it was found. But yes he will go to the police station in the am
Even better. If it's drug money, less likely someone will claim it

I'm encouraged how many PP are telling you to hand it in

steff13 · 18/10/2021 20:39

I found $240 on the floor of the grocery store once. I turned it in at the customer service desk, and 30 days later they called me and said no one claimed it, so I got to keep it.

I couldn't not turn it in; I kept thinking what if it was someone's grocery money for the week?

Weirdlynormal · 18/10/2021 20:40

I found £200 once. Gave it to Mind as I couldn't find the owner. I'd give to the police OP. You never know what the situation is.

Practicebeingpatient · 18/10/2021 20:43

Using your slightly flawed logic, the universe gave you £100 for handing in £4. So the universe multiplied your good £4 good deed by 25 to reward you with £100. If this is actually the universe keeping score it means that if you keep the £100 they will have to multiply that to £2500 to punish you for dishonesty. Can you afford that sort of punishment?

I'm glad some other peoples instant reaction is to keep it also. Maybe karma wasn't the best word to use but £100 would make such a difference to us, soft play today was a treat. Its just so tempting when it's in our flat! we were debating back and forth some of the points that have been raised. Hence the post But like I said we will be handing it in and really hope it finds it way back to us soon.

Good on you! Smile. I hope you are justly rewarded (and you’ll feel good too).
blameless · 18/10/2021 20:49

Karma is a bitch, so hand in the money. BUT

Years ago a woman filled up her car, paid for the petrol and placed her purse on the roof of the car while she fiddled with the key in the lock. I picked it up after she drove off and couldn't follow her.

Handed it in to the Police station and wasn't offered any form of receipt. One of the local officers was later sacked for 'borrowing' a mobile phone from Evidence.

If you hand it in, make sure that it's recorded and that you get a receipt!

antoniawhite · 18/10/2021 20:52

Hand it in. That’s far too much to kerp.

purplecorkheart · 18/10/2021 20:53

Hand in. I found a wallet many years ago in a department store, handed it in and about half an hour later noticed a woman searching for it. I will never forget the relief on her face when I stopped her and told her where it was handed in.

antoniawhite · 18/10/2021 20:53

Sorry. Saw update. I really hope you get it back too.

GreyhoundG1rl · 18/10/2021 20:54

You virtuously handed in £4 and think it's perfectly ok to keep several hundred?! Knock it off with the "I think it's karma!" nonsense 🙄
It's not yours. But you'll probably keep it anyway 🤷🏻‍♀️

thedancingbear · 18/10/2021 20:55

In principle, you should hand it in.

In practice, if you do that, there's every possibility that the cash is just going to end up in the back pockets of your local individual officers.

It's probably the 'wrong' answer, but in reality I'd be very tempted to hang onto it.

Chumleymouse · 18/10/2021 20:56

Keep it op and treat the family…………it’s just your lucky day .

There no such thing as karma 🤣. If there was I’d have been in serious trouble along time ago. It’s dog eat dog out there.

Yep. In fact, one of the papers did a study a while ago where they handed in 'lost' wallets at a variety of police stations, but with some kind of means of tracking. It transpired that a majority of those were not handled honestly. I'll see if I can dig out a link.

Are you really suggesting that op steals it before someone else does?

WeAllHaveWings · 18/10/2021 21:02

I couldn't keep it not knowing who lost it, I would hand in and also post on local Facebook pages that a substantial sum of money has been found and handed into police station so hopefully whoever lost sees it.

Welshiefluff · 18/10/2021 21:04

Keep the £4 hand in the £100.

Eloise12 · 18/10/2021 21:07

I would be worried it was someones rent or bill money, you should hand it in.

Bloodypunkrockers · 18/10/2021 21:08

@Gilly12345

Where exactly did Hubby find the £100?

Sorry I don’t trust the Police, how can you be so sure you would be given the money if it wasn’t reported missing?

If not claimed it would be given to the Police Xmas party.

Of course it would Hmm

And "hubby"? FFS

MrsLargeEmbodied · 18/10/2021 21:12

i found rolls of notes at soft play,
i handed them in, i do regret it

Ladywholoveswine · 18/10/2021 21:13

If it was me, I’d hand it in, if it’s not claimed after a certain amount of time, then you’re entitled to the money. However, I would ask that the police donate it to a charity of my choice, if not claimed.
