Should we keep the money we found?

This morning at soft play Ds found four £1 at the bottom of a slide. He was really excited but I explained how it wasn't ours and it had fallen out of someone's pocket and we handed it in to the reception. Unaware of the £4, on the way home DH found £100 in rolled up notes. He stood there for a while and didn't see anyone looking for it. I feel like it's good karma and we should keep it. My husband thinks we should give it to the police. (We are low income so feels like a lot of money)
So
YABU - you should practice what you preach to your son, hand it in.
YANBU - enjoy the good karma and keep it

He found money in street. He keeps it. Its different to finding said money in tesco where they have customer services etc

SockFluffInTheBath · 18/10/2021 20:06

A couple of years ago DH found a £10 note in town and since he had DD with him he handed it in at the police station. After the set time they called him to say it hadn’t been claimed, and what would he like to do with it. He asked if they had a charity box, they didn’t, so he said he’d have it back (to put in a charity box). Lots of huffing and puffing later they told him it had been misplaced and they would have to raise a cheque if he really wanted it. So he made them, just out of cussedness, since he said they’d clearly spent it on biscuits Grin

Chakraleaf · 18/10/2021 20:07

I would be paranoid it was someone's drug money and they would find me!

MrsSkylerWhite · 18/10/2021 20:07

Hand it in. Rolled up, presumably fell out of someone pocket, quite possibly to cover something really important.

Chumleymouse · 18/10/2021 20:09

Like coke

iwishiwasafish · 18/10/2021 20:10

Well, you handed in £4 and found £100, so hand in the £100 and see what the next level up is Smile

Chumleymouse · 18/10/2021 20:11

If I found ten grand I’d keep it……….. bury it in the back garden and keep my fingers crossed 🤞🏼

Exboltqueen · 18/10/2021 20:13

Absolutely, could be some sort of bizarre karma accumulator betting scheme Grin
LidlMiddleLover · 18/10/2021 20:15

Theft by finding is an offence Hand it in its not yours

saraclara · 18/10/2021 20:15

There is no such thing as karma, FFS.

Hand it in.

Chumleymouse · 18/10/2021 20:16

Yeah there is the karma sutra ……. 😘

MrsRobbieHart · 18/10/2021 20:17

How is this even a question?? Shock you hand it in! Someone has lost that £100. It could be someone’s food money for the month!

Chumleymouse · 18/10/2021 20:20

Yeah mine !! If a poor person is stupid enough to lose it , then another poor person ( me ) could do with the extra ……… too many bullshitters on here saying hand it in ……..

toocold54 · 18/10/2021 20:21

YABU £10 fine but £100 is a huge amount and can literally make or break someone’s life.

If you truly were on a low income it would be a no brainer and you’d both agree to try and give it back.

I couldn’t forgive myself if I’d knowingly taken some poor kids parents rent money.

Zebradanio · 18/10/2021 20:22

Hand it in to the police. If it's not claimed you get to keep it. I've done that and got to claim it later on.

TheVolturi · 18/10/2021 20:23

Once the cashpoint gave me £120 when I asked for £80. I panicked because I thought I'd get in trouble, and that it would take £120 off my balance. It was an independent atm and I didn't know who to talk to about it so I rang my bank and they said forget about it. I still worried for ages that I'd get a bill from somewhere, but I didn't. No idea what happened!
In you position op I would post on social media that you'd found some money, in that area, and wait to see if anyone comes forward. You obviously don't hand it over unless they describe it (rolled up, what sort of notes, and total amount)

toocold54 · 18/10/2021 20:24

I do believe in karma by the way. I’ve handed in money a couple of times and I’ve also had my money and phone handed in too.

You will get karma but probably not in the way you are hoping.

Kiduknot · 18/10/2021 20:24

I got to keep £100 when it wasn’t claimed.

TrollsAreSaddos · 18/10/2021 20:24

Sounds a bit contrived to me.

If it’s drug money you would probably end up getting it back.

Yogawankonobi · 18/10/2021 20:25

Practice what you preach.
I don’t understand handing in £4 but wanting to keep £100? I’m sure the £100 is missed more than £4.
You being a low income family is irrelevant, it’s not your money. In fact as a low income family how would you feel if you lost £100?

Bumpsadaisie · 18/10/2021 20:26

£100 - you got to hand it in.

Kiduknot · 18/10/2021 20:26

Make sure you chase them after the set time though. Don’t wait for them to contact you.

Porfre · 18/10/2021 20:27

This is actually really funny.

So the lesson is if you find £1 in the street you need to hand it in. But anything over £100 it's better to keep?

I usually do it the other way round. Small change you keep anything that is a larger amount you need to hand it inGrin

TakeYourFinalPosition · 18/10/2021 20:27

@Exboltqueen If it’s drug money; people aren’t likely to go and collect it from the police… so you might get it back.
