Should we keep the money we found?

This morning at soft play Ds found four £1 at the bottom of a slide. He was really excited but I explained how it wasn't ours and it had fallen out of someone's pocket and we handed it in to the reception. Unaware of the £4, on the way home DH found £100 in rolled up notes. He stood there for a while and didn't see anyone looking for it. I feel like it's good karma and we should keep it. My husband thinks we should give it to the police. (We are low income so feels like a lot of money)
So
YABU - you should practice what you preach to your son, hand it in.
YANBU - enjoy the good karma and keep it

That could also be someone who is in the same position as you or worse. It could be the difference of them and children eating, or not.
Please hand it in

PinkSyCo · 18/10/2021 21:18

Good karma? Lol. Why the hell do you think it’s ok to keep £100 but not £4. I can’t believe the hypocrisy of you to be honest.

52andblue · 18/10/2021 21:18

@Chumleymouse

If I found ten grand I’d keep it……….. bury it in the back garden and keep my fingers crossed 🤞🏼
Have you seen the film 'Shallow Grave'?
Angel2702 · 18/10/2021 21:23

Easy to say hand it in but most Police will no longer take responsibility for any lost property.

Best thing you could do would be to put posts up on local groups to see if anyone comes forward and can tell you how much is there.

Cherrysoup · 18/10/2021 21:23

I’m glad you aren’t keeping it, it’s theft by finding if you don’t make a good effort to return it to the owner plus morally wrong. What if that’s someone’s money for weekly shopping and they’re low income too?

RainingYetAgain · 18/10/2021 21:23

I followed a cyclist, and notes literally flew out of his back pocket. I collected 40 quid but couldn't find him. (He continued round the bend and then reached a cross roads.)
I put it on FB and Nextdoor, and local pub put a note up on the bar.
After a week I rang the police, who told me to hang on to it for another 3 weeks and then it was down to me what happened to it. However, she said if I handed it in, it would not be returned to me.
I gave it to a local charity.

Benjispruce4 · 18/10/2021 21:24

You have to hand it in. Some poor soul is having an awful realisation that they’ve lost a lot of money.

mummy182822828 · 18/10/2021 21:26

Hand it back you don't know what's going on in that person life they could be low income and security cameras could catch you taking it be careful hand it in you never know who's watching .

Biscoffee · 18/10/2021 21:26

You have to hand it in. Anything else would be dishonest.

HouseOfFire · 18/10/2021 21:30

@JovialNickname

Take it take it. Anyone who has £100 rolled up and loses it isn't poor. Even if it's an old person they'll be rattling around in their massive house that you will never afford collecting their free winter fuel allowance. Statistically you are poorer than anyone that casually loses £100. Keep it and use it well!
Actually - i'm a relatively high earner (although not to to the level of some people here Hmm ) I dont carry cash, because i have credit cards and dont need to carry cash.

That person may not be able to get a credit card, that person might have withdrawn from the post office on their pension, you have no idea how much money that person has

ShowOfHands · 18/10/2021 21:32

If not claimed it would be given to the Police Xmas party

Wtf is one of those? 14yrs in service, they don't even get a mince pie when working Christmas day to my knowledge. DH cooks his team full English Christmas breakfast on Dec 25th and pays for it himself.

GreyhoundG1rl · 18/10/2021 21:35

I'd imagine there's more than one police division in the country.

MargaretThursday · 18/10/2021 21:41

@clockover

You think the universe sent you £100 because you handed in £4? Give me a break 😆

This ^

Like WTF

By this logic that if they sent you £100 because you handed in £4, then handing in £4 should bring a couple of thousands. Grin
Chumleymouse · 18/10/2021 21:42

Most drug deals are done with folded or rolled up cash exchanges ( it’s easy to pass to each other) They don’t stand around getting wallets out and counting it in the park 😀. Normal ( honest ) people don’t carry cash around rolled up, it’s kept safe purse,wallet, bag, zipped pocket.

I would say it’s most definitely money from I’ll gotten gains ……… so get out and blow it ………… 🤣

Inanun2 · 18/10/2021 21:43

I left my handbag with purse in on holiday abroad at a very popular tourist spot - I was sure it would have been picked up and stolen but I raced back to where I had left it and someone was holding it checking my purse to see if there was ID in it. I was so lucky the ‘right’ sort of person found it and I got it back.
I would like to think most people would do that.
Hand it in as it is the right thing to do IMO.

ShowOfHands · 18/10/2021 21:43

@GreyhoundG1rl

I'd imagine there's more than one police division in the country.
I like the optimism in this post. Maybe elsewhere there are forces with enough money to adequately provide enough officers and enough left over for a knees up at least once a year.

Yes I shall hope that is true.

TractorAndHeadphones · 18/10/2021 21:44

Can you tell the soft play to contact you but not hand in?
I don't think people would check with the police - the soft play is unlikely to give the money back to you if unclaimed. They'd probably swipe it for themselves.

Elieza · 18/10/2021 21:46

Hand it in and make sure you tell them you want it if nobody claims it and that you want the finders fee if they do.

Every time I’ve found money I’ve had it back as nobody claimed it. Grin

Deadringer · 18/10/2021 21:49

I would hand it in. But, about 30 years ago my dh found a bundle of notes just lying in the street, a couple of minutes before he found it a man had walked past him, a known criminal. It was about 700 pounds, an absolute fortune to us at the time. I persuaded him to hand it in to the police. At that time you had to wait a year to claim it, he went back to the police 12 months to the day and there was no record of any money handed in, the copper had obviously pinched it. I am normally very honest but i always regretted not keeping it.

DanielRicciardosSmile · 18/10/2021 21:49

If handing in £4 resulted in karma of £100, then surely you should keep going. Hand in the £100 and you'll find £2500. Then hand that in, and find £62,500. By the end of the week you'll be richer than Jeff Bezos!

Redruby2020 · 18/10/2021 21:50

@PinkiOcelot

Is it true that if you hand it in to the police and it isn’t claimed you get it back? If so, I would do that. At least you’ve tried and if you get it back you can spend it with a clear conscience.
😆 You'll never see the money again that way, nor will the person who lost it 😉😆
jeannie46 · 18/10/2021 21:51

Found a wallet with someone's passport, holiday money etc in it behind a bench on a Cross Channel ferry - just where you get off. I took it to the Purser and it was returned to the owner who hadn't missed it. Wondered how it could have got there. Looking back I think it was probably stashed by a pick pocket who'd expect to pick it up again just before they disembarked.

Picked up £140 late at night on the pavement. Handed it in to the Police and it was sent back to me a few weeks later.

Couldn't have lived with myself had I kept it.

Anon778833 · 18/10/2021 21:52

I would hand it in because if nobody claims it you'll get it anyway.

£100 is a lot of money for some people. It could be someone's food, electric or gas money. Ime rich folk don't carry that much cash around.

BaggyBloomers · 18/10/2021 21:54

Reminds me of a story in the news years ago. A couple of kids found a carrier bag in a phone box that was full of ripped up £ notes. They said at the time it was in the thousands. The kids handed the bag of torn cash into the police, but no one ever came forward to claim it in the time period so they eventually gave it back them & told them whatever they could stick back together correctly they could keep. Never did find out how much they made from it Smile

madroid · 18/10/2021 21:54

Please hand it in.

Someone did that for me once and I was so grateful. At the time it was the difference between feeding my dc or not.
