Should we keep the money we found?

This morning at soft play Ds found four £1 at the bottom of a slide. He was really excited but I explained how it wasn't ours and it had fallen out of someone's pocket and we handed it in to the reception. Unaware of the £4, on the way home DH found £100 in rolled up notes. He stood there for a while and didn't see anyone looking for it. I feel like it's good karma and we should keep it. My husband thinks we should give it to the police. (We are low income so feels like a lot of money)
So
YABU - you should practice what you preach to your son, hand it in.
YANBU - enjoy the good karma and keep it

Don't be a hypocrite

@Exboltqueen

I know it is the right thing to do. It just seemed too much of a coincidence to happen on the same day. I'm doubtful we will get it back though its probably drug money due to the area it was found. But yes he will go to the police station in the am
You probably will get it back, not many people would go to the police station asking if their money had been handed in.

I found notes in a money bag in the street once. I handed it in but it wasn’t claimed. It paid for a nice winter coat for DS.

Exboltqueen · 18/10/2021 19:47

Nope never heard of it.

I’d keep it, just drop it in my pocket and wander home with a smile on my face , If someone is stupid enough to drop it without noticing then tough luck . 😀. Probably drug money anyway.

TertiusLydgate · 18/10/2021 19:52

If this is for real, and I find it dubious, of course you shouldn't keep it!

Could you spend someone's lost money with a clear conscience?

If you believe in karma, that makes no sense whatsoever.

Cheeseontoastwithchopsauce · 18/10/2021 19:53

So you get all holier than thou when it's in front of your kid to teach them morals and then think seriously about pocketing 100 quid cos your kid wasn't about at the time?
Confused

Wheelz46 · 18/10/2021 19:53

I found a substantial amount of money in the street that wasn't in a purse, wouldn't have dreamt of pocketing it.

I handed it in to the police, a grateful elderly lady was in floods of tears when she found it had been handed in. Thought she never would see the money again which was going to pay for her heating.

She wanted to get in touch with a reward for returning it, I said to the lovely police officer, the biggest reward was it being returned to the owner, I wouldn't have dreamt of receiving an award for something I would hope any honest person would do.

Yabu. Someone might be desperate for that money. If they're not or its dodgy , they won't claim it and you'll get it back.

I lost a £10 note in a corner shop once and I was so skint, I couldn't eat for a few days. Several months later I was in the shop again and the owner handed me £10 as he'd found it under one of the freezers. This was 20 odd years ago and I've never forgotten his decency. The World can be a shitty place, choose to be a decent person to others, not a jerk. The impact on others can be huge.

mellicauli · 18/10/2021 19:58

People who still use cash: the elderly, the young, the poor and drug dealers (I assume)..I’d hand it in.

Chumleymouse · 18/10/2021 19:58

I’d have kept the 4 quid too.

chesirecat99 · 18/10/2021 20:00

@JesusInTheCabbageVan

If you keep it without taking sufficient steps to find the owner, it's theft. Aside f from being morally wrong, you could end up with a criminal record if caught on CCTV. Or your DH in this case.
This ^

It's called theft by finding.

Hand it in. If it isn't claimed, you will be able to keep it. If you believe it's "karma" for handing in the £4, surely karma will send the £100 back to you? Maybe not now as you were going to keep it.

user1493494961 · 18/10/2021 20:00

Just keep it.

Ari202 · 18/10/2021 20:01

A woman I know lost £100 around this time a few years ago. She’s saved that money for her sons birthday and she was absolutely heartbroken, called into the local police station to see if it was handed in, the post office close by.
It was gone.
She cried, she absolutely sobbed her heart out.

Personally, I would hand the money in. If nobody claims it then you can have it anyway.

Gilly12345 · 18/10/2021 20:01

Where exactly did Hubby find the £100?

Sorry I don’t trust the Police, how can you be so sure you would be given the money if it wasn’t reported missing?

If not claimed it would be given to the Police Xmas party.

Well it's not OP's money so it doesn't matter if she doesn't get it back.
GertietheGherkin · 18/10/2021 20:02

I'd have to hand it in, my conscience would haunt me otherwise. I'm glad your Husband is going to hand it in OP. It's the right thing to do.

DoormatBob · 18/10/2021 20:02

I thought the police stopped taking lost property years ago?

GrolliffetheDragon · 18/10/2021 20:03

In those circumstances I'd hand it in.

£5 or less on the street I'd keep. Anything more I'd hand in (depending on the circumstances, found £10 once in the middle of nowhere covered in mud. Kept it). Anything more than a £2 coin I'd hand in in a shop or other venue.

delilahbucket · 18/10/2021 20:05

You're right OP, £100 is a lot of money. I'd be devastated if I lost that amount and someone stole it because they believed they had done a right thing and the universe owed them. It isn't yours so you try and find the owner.

CatbellsQueen · 18/10/2021 20:05

Our police don't take in lost property any more. There was a FB post recently telling people to hand it in at the shop or location where you found it. So not sure really what you'd do at a park! Goes against my conscience completely as I'd have always said hand it in, but don't really see how there is any alternative to keeping it.

Goawaymorningsickeness · 18/10/2021 20:05

To keep the money is an offence of theft by finding. Of course you need to hand it to the Police.

OnceuponaRainbow18 · 18/10/2021 20:05

If it’s lots I would hand it in! £20 or less I keep and donate the same amount to save the children!

SunShinesBrightly · 18/10/2021 20:06

Hmm... If you believe in ‘Karma’ keep it and see what happens.
No doubt it will bite you right back.
In other words you have £100 of someone else’s money now but one day someone will take something belonging to you or you may lose something yourself and not have it returned to you.
