If one person in the house is on a particular diet, should everyone else be on it too?

It's for health reasons, this person is overweight and sedentary. They currently do none of the cooking or shopping. They can't have takeaways, sweets, chocolates etc. We're not a very sweet tooth house but do get takeaway occasionally. Dinners cooked 6 days a week from scratch reasonably healthy, meat, fish veg etc. If this person now wants to go on a specialist diet, should they source and cook for themselves or do I have to do it basically?? (I'm refusing. That's the Aibu)

I think if someone needs to make dietary changes for health they should be supported and I'd be prepared to make some changes, as I would feel the whole family would benefit from them. However, the real issue seems to be the expectation that you do everything. You need a fairer system for shopping and cooking and then a compromise on the menus.

It depends on the diet. If it’s very restrictive then no, the other healthy people in the house don’t need to follow it. If it’s just a case of eating healthier meals together then I can’t see much issue with this.

Should also say that I think people trying to lose weight should be supported and I don’t think it’s kind to sit munching chocolate or whatever in front of them regularly. The rest of the family should make some effort to support them.

The rest of the family does already eat a healthy diet. The complainer is issuing orders about what the OP has to specially cook him.

If it's for health reasons, it would help him massively if everyone in the house cooperates

mustlovegin · 03/02/2022 17:52

You shouldn't have to do do everything though OP. He should be doing the shopping and cooking too

I don't think you all need to eat the same diet and meals, but I do think that removing junk: chocolate, sweets, biscuits etc is the right thing to do.

I am on a restricted diet due to IBS and if there is chocolate / crisps around, I regularly end up bingeing on them. These foods are just so addictive. Sugar addiction is a genuine thing!

Miiaaoow · 03/02/2022 19:36

It doesn't mean you can't eat it, but it's kind of cruel to have it in the cupboards or to sit there and eat it in front of someone who is desperately trying to avoid it. Instead of takeaways, maybe take your children out for dinner.
