Asked to leave for not wearing a mask

DuchessOfDisaster · 16/10/2021 11:11

I've just gone to my book group meeting. I'm mask exempt, and have a cold. Not COVID, we test twice a week at work. I was asked to wear a mask and as I didn't have one offered to leave. The other members said they thought that was best.

It's silly but I feel miffed! Even though I think it's the right thing!

Plenty of mask wearers and vaccinated are getting covid so your point is ridiculous.

Vinomummyinlockdown · 17/10/2021 20:01

@Scirocco yes that’s great. I’m asking for the research those saying masks protect against viruses are citing. If you claim something protects from viruses show me the research.

Ddot · 17/10/2021 20:04

In China its considered to be very rude to not wear a mask when your feeling ill. Don't be selfish, we have all been hidden away for over a year our immune system is getting lazy, dont spread your germs. And apparently their is a very nasty cold spreading about.

Ddot · 17/10/2021 20:07

Just lost my SIL sister she refused vaccine.

AnnieSnap · 17/10/2021 20:23

@UsedUpUsername

Gawd you’ll notice people wear professionally fitted respirators when caring for ppl with respiratory illnesses not surgical mask.

So drop that line of argument.

It’s mostly to prevent bacterial spread, as bacteria are much larger than a virus. Oh and splatter

And yet in an operating theatre during surgery they wear (drum) roll . . . a surgical mask!
KaptainKaveman · 17/10/2021 20:28

Of course you were unreasonable. Why would you show up knowing you were ill and likely to be infectious? How twattish. Hmm

Scirocco · 17/10/2021 20:30

@Vinomummyinlockdown I've just told you how to get access to the research yourself. Go to PubMed Central's website. Search for whatever your question is about (in this case, face masks in reducing the spread of COVID-19). Voilà, you now have access to peer-reviewed publications, which you know have not been cherry-picked by other people.

Masks and vaccines do not make people 100% immune. People can be vaccinated and wear masks and still get COVID. What masks and vaccines do is reduce the risk, and the vaccines also reduce the risk of serious illness or death if someone does catch it.

Honestly, people trust a mechanic to tell them what to do with their car, but don't trust doctors to tell them how to reduce the risk of catching serious illnesses...

Chuck2015 · 17/10/2021 20:31

I try not to be too judgemental on here but actually this post has made me angry. Covid is NOT over, we have nearly 43,000 thousand new infections in this country, people are still dying. To compare, Portugal has 828 and Italy 2772 and the highest is nearly 9 times less than us. This is because other countries have learnt lesson and ARE WEARING MASKS. When will people get it? It's like we are sleepwalking through this and behaving bluntly pretty selfishly. Of course you should wear one if displaying any symptoms at all, I've had covid despite two injections and its horrible but I still feel lucky to be alive. And as others have said, in the current climate who wants to put themselves at risk of getting anything, it's flu season also and some people get colds much worse than others.

JudgementalCactus · 17/10/2021 20:34

@Vinomummyinlockdown

Meta-analyses suggest that mask use provided a significant protective effect (OR = 0.35 and 95% CI = 0.24–0.51). Use of masks by healthcare workers (HCWs) and non-healthcare workers (Non-HCWs) can reduce the risk of respiratory virus infection by 80% (OR = 0.20, 95% CI = 0.11–0.37) and 47% (OR = 0.53, 95% CI = 0.36–0.79).

Take your uniformed silly opinions elsewhere!

MrsSkylerWhite · 17/10/2021 20:37

What’s your complaint? You offered to leave, they said yes.
I wouldn’t want your cold either, thanks.

Newbabynewhouse · 17/10/2021 20:41

@Vinomummyinlockdown

I don't need evidence as it's just simply common sense.. but I see we won't agree here as is seems you are one of the conspiracy theorists .. and that's fine, have your own opinion but surely it's just obvious that a mask can help limit colds and other infections...?

Lostandlittle · 17/10/2021 20:46

Just at the cinema and someone is sniffing up snot

blahblah789 · 17/10/2021 20:46

@DuchessOfDisaster

I have severe asthma. I can cope with a mask for nipping in and out of a shop but longer than 15 minutes and I begin to wheeze.

Not everyone with a mask exemption is making it up.

I have severe brittle asthma. I use a medication only around 50 others in the country use because it’s so expensive on the nhs because I’m so severe it’s the only thing that keeps me out of hospital. Also have around 40% lung function. Still manage to wear a mask and did throughout the whole pandemic. As someone who has asthma attacks regularly it shocks me that people would rather risk not being able to breathe for weeks with covid than wear a mask for a few hours. Masks absolutely do not affect ability to breathe. If they did then the hospital would have told me to take mine off everytime I ended up at a&e for nebulisers. Colds may be inconsequential to you but my last one caused a chest infection and 2 weeks in hospital away from my child. So disgustingly selfish.
Lostandlittle · 17/10/2021 20:48

I think most people just don’t like to wear them.

Newbabynewhouse · 17/10/2021 20:49

@Lostandlittle

Get off your phone in the cinema.. it's illegal to record Grin

Blinky21 · 17/10/2021 20:49

I think it's fair enough, esp if you have a cold

I’ve already watched this on priate

browneyes77 · 17/10/2021 21:09

@Rosesareyellow

I’m surprised by the responses on here. I’m sure pre-Covid no one would have thought it reasonable to tell someone to stay away from everyone because of a cold, except if you were visiting a new born maybe. Times have changed.
I absolutely would have thought it reasonable pre-Covid, to ask someone with a cold to keep away from me and others and keep their germs to themselves!

As someone who often suffers with bad chest infections/bronchitis from catching colds and who has an elderly mother with bronchiectasis, I am someone who has always been pissed off when people go out unnecessarily with colds and spread their germs around!

Fahrted · 17/10/2021 21:13
@Fahrted

Don't be so ridiculous.
Well, I think people are ridiculous for wearing the wretched germy things. Each to their own.

Barmychick · 17/10/2021 21:26

Ad numerous Doctors have stated you don't know if it's cold/ flu/covid
Stay at home! This winter is set to be extremely testing. Good luck to us all!

Hankunamatata · 17/10/2021 21:29

Anyone with with any wit these days know that you avoid going put and about unnecessarily within cold because you will make everyone nervous and probably spreading at worst covid or at least a cold

MarvellousMonsters · 17/10/2021 21:30

@pianolessons1

Mask exempt? For what reason? The vast majority of people who claim mask exemption to me (I'm an HCP with full access to their notes) it's BS.
I was just going to say this.

Put the mask on. Fucks sake.

Angie1403 · 17/10/2021 22:13

I said YANBU & oh btw, click bait titles are really annoying

Lweji · 17/10/2021 22:43

@Vinomummyinlockdown

Plenty of mask wearers and vaccinated are getting covid so your point is ridiculous.
This tends to happen when almost everyone is vaccinated and/or wears masks. It's still true that vaccines and masks protect people.

Just because people still die in cars while wearing a seat belt, it doesn't mean that seat belts don't make car journeys safer.

Anitarest · 17/10/2021 23:11

It’s not bull shit-it’s “I’m special, look at me. People didn’t know I was special but now they do because I wear a lanyard saying I’m special.”
Mind you I really don’t think staff on the delicatessen and sandwich counters should be allowed to get away with wearing lanyards. They might cough or breathe on my food.
