Asked to leave for not wearing a mask

DuchessOfDisaster · 16/10/2021 11:11

I've just gone to my book group meeting. I'm mask exempt, and have a cold. Not COVID, we test twice a week at work. I was asked to wear a mask and as I didn't have one offered to leave. The other members said they thought that was best.

It's silly but I feel miffed! Even though I think it's the right thing!

It's probably best since if you catch a cold in the current circumstances you are likely to have to remain off work and likewise your DC off school until you are proven clear.

@JinglingHellsBells

That’s a super old article, published even before the Danish study. Where’s the study you mentioned earlier?

Lots of junk science in that article, which they at least had the decency to admit. I personally enjoyed the reference to the hamster study. Very science-y.

Love how you all think a shitty little mask stops ANY kind of virus 🤣🤣🤣🤡🤡🤡

So all health professionals wear them for shits and giggles?
masterblaster · 17/10/2021 18:51

Was the book you were studying “the hot zone?”

MyrtlethePurpleTurtle · 17/10/2021 18:51

@Pollythecat15

You might as well have walked in and said "Hey, I tested negative for COVID, but you can have my cold if you want".
😂

Selfish behaviour pre pandemic, tone deaf during a pandemic

Fuck me. Viruses are in droplets, which can get caught by a mask.

I’m uncomfortable around anyone not wearing a mask inside. I never understand why mask exempt people can’t ware a face shield? It’s simple thing to do, and just makes others less stressed and scared.

I'm uncomfortable around people wearing masks inside. They make me feel stressed and scared. 🤷🏼‍♀️

@fuckitbucket16

If there’s anything good to come out of this, I hope it’s that people continue to wear masks in public when they’re sick.

Honestly, no one wants your cold either.

I'm totally with you Bucket

Should we just stop wearing masks in operating theatres then? 🤷🏻‍♀️

There's extensive research to support the use of surgical quality or better face masks in reducing the risk of transmitting respiratory infections. They don't provide 100% protection - nothing does - but they help. Honestly, if people had just worn the darned things properly and followed basic hygiene and infection control, we wouldn't be in the current mess.

JesusIsAnyNameFree · 17/10/2021 19:15

@Fahrted

Don't be so ridiculous.

Newbabynewhouse · 17/10/2021 19:27

I know you've been skat3d enough and this isn't exactly answering your OP but I want to jump on the bandwagon here and say it pisses me off when people say they are exempt! Yes some are like if you have oxygen mask etc..... but some of the reasons are silly like "I feel trapped when I wear one"... who doesn't!?!??!! You could potentially be spreading a deadly disease as you feel a little out of breath wearing a mask.. it's only usually for half an hour when your shopping in Primark anyway so if it bothers you that much just don't go shopping! (This isn't aimed at you OP but a PP brought up that people are exempt for BS reasons so I wanted to join the rant)

Blueink · 17/10/2021 19:28

Should have stayed home with a cold, your.book club don’t want it or the ramifications of having potential Covid symptoms.

Blueink · 17/10/2021 19:31

Agree without PCR you couldn’t assume Covid negative, especially if you have been vaccinated, symptoms show up differently

AnnieSnap · 17/10/2021 19:31

@DuchessOfDisaster

I have severe asthma. I can cope with a mask for nipping in and out of a shop but longer than 15 minutes and I begin to wheeze.

Not everyone with a mask exemption is making it up.

I have asthma too, as do two of my adult grandchildren. So I suppose we are all mask exempt too. We all wear masks. They really don’t cause a problem unless and asthmatic is in the middle of an acute attack and an asthmatic wouldn’t be off to the shops or book group in that state anyway. If masks curtailed a person’s breathing, NHS staff wouldn’t be able to wear them for 12 hours and more at a time.

I’m not having a go at you. Maybe you haven’t tried wearing a mask because of all the shroud waving going on in society saying asthmatics are exempt. Honestly, try wearing a mask, you’ll be fine.

Newbabynewhouse · 17/10/2021 19:32

Just want to also agree with @Scirocco ... @Vinomummyinlockdown of course masks HELP limit the spread of all sorts of airborne diseases... imagine having an illness and coughing or sneezing in public without a mask... all those particles spread 2 metres around you... if you wear a mask and sneeze or cough.. then only 60% of those particles spread 1 metre around you (as an example) ..it might not STOP the spread but it helps so why not try??....

Vinomummyinlockdown · 17/10/2021 19:37

@Newbabynewhouse please feel free to share your research evidence. I’d love to read it. All I see is a bunch of masked sheep. Riding bikes wearing masks (!!!), walking along the street, wearing a mask in a pub whilst walking in then taking it off whilst sat down. Clown show. People are afraid of oxygen now.

Oh, the good old sheep insult. Always the same sort of people using that one.

Anitarest · 17/10/2021 19:43

It’s amazing that this dispute about masks is still going on. All my family except me are asthmatic and all wear masks whether they like it or not.
I didn’t wear one recently in a supermarket (unplanned visit and I forgot it) and I coughed. A lanyard wearer asked why I wasn’t wearing my mask so I said I’d forgotten my lanyard!
When I was being operated on I’m glad the staff wore masks and didn’t come up with excuses not to. When I’m at the dentist I’m glad she wears a mask.

UsedUpUsername · 17/10/2021 19:45

Gawd you’ll notice people wear professionally fitted respirators when caring for ppl with respiratory illnesses not surgical mask.

So drop that line of argument.

It’s mostly to prevent bacterial spread, as bacteria are much larger than a virus. Oh and splatter

Underhisi · 17/10/2021 19:54

"I never understand why mask exempt people can’t ware a face shield?"

Because some of them would pull it off their faces in the same way that they would pull a mask off. It's really not difficult to understand.

Scirocco · 17/10/2021 19:57

@Vinomummyinlockdown if you're interested in research of any kind, PubMed Central can be a good resource for peer-reviewed publications.

@UsedUpUsername A lot of us didn't have N95 masks, let alone respirators (!), we wore surgical masks when that was what we had. They aren't as effective as N95s, nobody's claimed that they are, but if wearing something is going to reduce the risk of me or someone else inadvertently transmitting a potentially deadly viral infection to others, surely we should wear that if we can.

I'm willing to bet that a good number of the people posting here about sheep and living in fear would still go to a hospital and seek help if they were to become ill with COVID. If you would seek medical help once you're ill with COVID it's probably a good idea to follow the medical advice being widely given with the aim of STOPPING you and others from getting ill with it in the first place.
