My friend won’t let me bring my gecko to her house. Aibu?

I’m going to visit my friend for the weekend soon with my kids.

We have to look after the school gecko for half term, so I asked if we could bring him with us. He’s very small and his tank is only shoe box sized so this seemed quite reasonable to me.

She responded in an extremely abrupt way to say that I couldn’t bring him and would need to find another arrangement. She was particularly irate about the idea I would need to bring live crickets to feed him with. I reassured her that feeding geckos crickets is totally ethical, and that they are in an escape proof container but she was resolute. Tbh I think she was drunk.

I feel really hurt that she wouldn’t allow what seems like quite a small request! If she wanted to bring her gecko to my house I would be totally okay with that. It’s very inconvenient for me too, I think that she just doesn’t value my time or friendship. I’m already having to make arrangements for my dog and chickens when we go to visit so the gecko is just a step too far.

Aibu?

Geck-no OP - this is simply not cricket 😁

WiddlinDiddlin · 14/10/2021 20:32

Assuming this is real.

Geckos are not suitable pets to be taken home by a different kid every holiday or weekend.

So instead of expecting friend to put up with noisey escapey crickets and an unexpected gecko, you need to tell school you will not further enable their abuse of this animal, and that they need to provide appropriate housing for it at all times, in one place.

HotSauceCommittee · 14/10/2021 20:33

You could come to my house with the gecko, OP. I would welcome you.

YouTubeAddict · 14/10/2021 20:35

😂 😂 Whilst I would personally would be fine with it, I still think YABU. Your friend has said no, it’s her house and you sound very entitled. You should have told the school that you can’t have the gecko this week.

ChristmasPlanning · 14/10/2021 20:36

You already have a plan fir the chickens & dogs, get the pet sitter or another pet sitter to look after the gecko too.

If you're not happy to do that stay home.

Getyourownback · 14/10/2021 20:37

Get the poor gecko a bigger tank! There’s no sport to catching the crickets otherwise.

Kb2942 · 14/10/2021 20:40

It's her house so her rules. I wouldn't allow it either tbh! Not because I'm an ass, but because I'm not into exotic pets. If it was a dog/dogs I'd let you bring them of course 😅

Wrenna · 14/10/2021 20:41

Sorry yabu. The smell of reptiles makes me heave although they are adorable IMO. I did the classroom thing too and had to keep two small lizards. I had to move them all the way to the furthest room because I couldn’t handle the smell and they were well cared for.

Bigassbeebuzzbuzz · 14/10/2021 20:43

What have I read Shock
If you were my friend I would assume you were smoking something amazing and would let you if you agreed to bring that smoke with you Grin

Ours doesn’t smell. I have super smell abilities and if he was even slightly stinky he would be gone
nancybotwinbloom · 14/10/2021 20:52

Fucks sake no.

If my mates come to stay they can bring their kids if they can't get baby sitters but they can't bring their fucking geckos and crickets though.

Embroidery · 14/10/2021 20:52

You are mad as a hatter

IndraOnTheMountain · 14/10/2021 20:54

Well I’m quite taken aback at the responses really. I guess our house must be more animal friendly.

Our chickens like to come inside and lie on the sofa (see the picture!) so it had never crossed my mind that a small gecko in a tank wouldn’t be welcome!

Really it doesn’t seem much to accommodate for a friend. No she doesn’t have her own gecko - if she did I think she would be more understanding of the situation. Hypothetically though - if she had a gecko I would be very welcoming to it.

Obvs I'm in the minority but I wouldn't mind?!! It's in a tank, not roaming free.

iklboo · 14/10/2021 21:01

Make like Elsa, OP.

seaandsandcastles · 14/10/2021 21:06

YABVU. And that’s cute that you let those animals on your sofa. I wouldn’t be going to your house.

seaandsandcastles · 14/10/2021 21:07

Not cute, vile. Weird autocorrect.

Franklyfrost · 14/10/2021 21:14

Mmmm now you say your chickens come inside I think your friend has been to your house, not loved the dr Doolittle vibe and doesn’t want anything roaming around sh*trying and chewing as animals are prone to do.

Franklyfrost · 14/10/2021 21:15

You’ve put her off all pets by having dog hairs in the jam. Your house, your rules. Her house…

Lovealovestory · 14/10/2021 21:22

Are you on crack
