My son have shaved his head. His beautiful beautiful curls are no more. 😭

He's 21.
Hair grows back.
It's his hair.
Yes I am being ridiculous.
I'm also blatantly abusing AIBU so you can have a pop at me for that too. 🤣

As a kid my DS had tons of dark auburn corkscrew curly hair. People remarked on how beautiful it was, old ladies told me it was wasted on a bit and he'd shave it off first chance he got. Those old ladies weren't wrong Sad

He's had a short shaved head since he was 15 and he's 20 now. Occasionally promises to grow it back then just as it's starting to look promising, boom, shaves it off again.

I know it's only hair but it looks so good when it's grown in!!

*wasted on a boy that should read

NKFell · 12/10/2021 17:04

Oh I feel for you Grin

My DS's Dad is a barber and always insists on never letting it grow more than 1cm of curls on the top and BALD back and sides Envy

Chipperfish · 12/10/2021 17:09

Shave your own head to match
Tell him you have heard 'balds have more fun'
He will soon be growing it back

MyPatronusIsACat · 12/10/2021 17:15

What is it with mums and their SON'S glorious curls? Confused They are obsessed. Never see mums of girls raving about their DAUGHTER'S glorious curls. They make a fuss of them yeah, but mums make SO much more fuss of he 'glorious curls' on their sons!

Bizarre.

@IveGotASongThatllGetOnYNerves YABU.

MyPatronusIsACat · 12/10/2021 17:16

MyPatronusIsACat · 12/10/2021 17:17

Griefmonster · 12/10/2021 17:31

@RubbishRobotFromTheDawnOfTime

If you cry onto his head your tears may encourage regrowth.

You know YABU but also YANBU Smile

Oh love x I would miss burying my head in that cushion of curls and breathing in my child. You will have to make do with a bald weep and a sniff ... YANBU AND we are all BU.

I guess traditionally girls tend to keep their curls so you’re not likely to get that moment of seeing them shaved off.

Of course some girls have very short hair but the majority have at least a bob or longer.

BlackeyedSusan · 12/10/2021 17:36

mine looks netter with short hair, so yabvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvu to not feel exactly the same as me...

Wink
MyPatronusIsACat · 12/10/2021 17:38

I get what you're saying @Kanaloa but this fuss mums make over their sons 'glorious curls,' is before they are shaved off.

CorpusCallosum · 12/10/2021 17:39

@IamMaz

This is mine - aged 29 and not had a hair cut since Covid. I took this photo of him after he'd driven to see me, soaking wet, from jumping into a local river with his mates!!! Didn't have a comb or hairbrush on him!!!

Does he know he could be a bridal hair model?! 😍

flippertyop · 12/10/2021 17:42

I prefer it

I don't have daughters so I can only post about my sons.

And yes, I am absolutely unreasonable.

I no doubt would be equally so if I had girls instead of / as well as boys.

As a Black woman I can say this - his hair wasn't very moisturised before and other Black people might have seen it as unkempt (maybe white people too but I absolutely don't care what other white people think).*

I doubt he cares what you think

Simonjt · 12/10/2021 17:56

My son has never had a haircut, I’ll be gutted if he ever decides to cut it.

At least if he leaves it he should have enougj regrowth to keep his head warm in winter.

Legaleaglenot · 12/10/2021 18:19

When DH cut DD's curls off I said I'd have to have another baby.

Sorry OP Grin

NeverDropYourMooncup · 12/10/2021 18:22

Look on the positives - you know he is going to look absolutely fantastic if he has early Male Pattern Baldness.

And in the meantime, you get the lovely soft regrowth to pet each time he gives you a hug.

ClinkeyMonkey · 12/10/2021 18:35

Aw, his hair was truly gorgeous! I feel your pain. Long hair just looks RIGHT on some people, although I bet you'll soon get used to seeing him with his buzzed head.

DS1 is 13 and has long, black, wavy hair and, although he complains about the frizzy cloud that emerges in damp weather, he loves it long and so do I. It suits him. DS2, on the other hand, looks strange with long hair. It's match straight and very wiry, so sticks out at odd angles like a funny little cartoon character. He wanted long hair 'like his brother' for a while, then finally begged me to cut it!

MyPatronusIsACat · 12/10/2021 21:26

Your son has never had a haircut? Shock Why? Confused

I have noticed (from threads like these, of which there are many,) that the boys who end up having these very short buzzcuts, have mothers who insisted on keeping their boy's hair long for as long as they possibly could.

I don't understand the desperation from some mothers to keep their son's hair long.

As I say, it seems to be only the mothers who are desperate for their son to keep their hair long, who have sons who then go on to have it (and keep it,) as short as possible. (Or the father of the boys get it cut short without the boy's mother knowing he is taking him to get it cut.)

IveGotASongThatllGetOnYNerves · 12/10/2021 23:45

I can't speak for anyone else but me I just think it's really cute. Reminded me of when he was little and all the lovely memories of him bouncing about and dancing. I don't have daughters but if I did I suspect I'd be equally unreasonably sad if they decided to shave off all their hair.

Here's where I dripfeed the mother of all that is unreasonable. The most YABU worthy AIBU in the history of AIBU. If MN did annual awards, I'd be taking home the winner of the most hypocritical AIBU trophy.

I take the clippers to my own hair a few times a year. 😁

It just starts to bug the hell out of me, out come the clippers and my husband comes home to find his wife damned near scalped herself again. 🤣
