My son have shaved his head. His beautiful beautiful curls are no more. 😭

He's 21.
Hair grows back.
It's his hair.
Yes I am being ridiculous.
I'm also blatantly abusing AIBU so you can have a pop at me for that too. 🤣

I bet he looks equally handsome now. It’s good to have a style change as you get older, you want to have your own new ‘adult’ style.

In the interests of aibu-typical contrariness, yanbu! It’s understandable to feel a bit wobbly watching your little boy growing up.

MobyDicksTinyCanoe · 12/10/2021 15:10

Well I'm outraged and I don't even know him 😂😂😂

Improv · 12/10/2021 15:18

From the back, the "before" pic looks like a little old lady Grin

So I think he's made the right choice!

ravenmum · 12/10/2021 15:25

You are trying to be reasonable about being unreasonable, which is unreasonable in itself. Meta-unreasonable.

His hair didn't look in great condition before, I agree with pp.

My aunt got annoyed with my cousin when he shaved his "lovely thick" hair due to having bald patches at age 60!

IveGotASongThatllGetOnYNerves · 12/10/2021 15:29

@BeanyBops

I am going to be even more unreasonable and offer some unsolicited curly hair advice! His hair is obviously beautiful so not a criticism but he shouldn't ever brush it... Thats why PPs son (with pic) has lovely hair because he hasn't brushed the curls out! Son should try raking gel through it when soaking wet, leaving it to dry without touching. It will go all crispy and stringy - he then needs to 'scrunch out the crunch' literally scrunching it with his hands until the crispy look goes away. He will be left with beautifully defined glossy curls and will never want to shave it again! Just refresh with water in the morning. From one curly to another.

P.s. I will also cry when my daughter does this!!

That's why he always brushed it out, he hated the ringlets. Oh they were gorgeous though! And yes, more shiny than when he started brushing them out. His brother's hair has a much tighter curl and he keeps it short but not shaved.

@ElephantOfRisk

Aww OP, he may or may not grow it back.

DS shaved his off for charity a few months ago.

He actually suits it shaved but he's just letting it grow back in and it's a bit of a mess now.

His girlfriend did hers too and also suited it.

I thought the second pic was of his girlfriend and wondered why she was face down on the floor Grin
IveGotASongThatllGetOnYNerves · 12/10/2021 15:39

@Wroxie

As a Black woman I can say this - his hair wasn't very moisturised before and other Black people might have seen it as unkempt (maybe white people too but I absolutely don't care what other white people think). No one is required to moisturise their hair and it shouldn't matter, just like it shouldn't matter if a woman wears makeup or if a man wears well-fitting clothes, but he'll probably get more positive attention with the new haircut.
Yup. When he was little I used Shea butter and coconut oil (not at the same time) but he absolutely refuses nowadays.

Grin Her hair was long but not as long as his and a different colour When he came home for a holiday after having it done, i kept on getting a fright around the house as I didn't recognise him with an almost black haired buzz cut. DS1 lives at home and now has long dark ringlets

IveGotASongThatllGetOnYNerves · 12/10/2021 15:44

This was him when little.
School brushed his hair for photo day. I wish they'd left it alone because it was gorgeous.

My Dd had Rapunzel hair.A sheet of golden silk down to her knees.
(her choice). Then I 'nagged her to brush it too much' (she has ASD sensory issues so it was not easy length, but like I say, her choice).
Her next choice was to get it cut. Fair do's. I said I'd book it.
But she did it herself upstairs with kitchen scissors (she was 12).
Almost scalped herself on the left., chopped above ear on right.
She came downstairs with pillow case on her head. I knew...
(it's now a jaw length bob which is easy to keep clean & looks good. she still does'nt brush it much mind!)
Then, at the weekend, my 17 yr old went for a sleepover and came back without his glorious almost-Brian-Blessed-level beard: I almost squawked! It had been done by his 'friend' whilst he was asleep,. Grrr.... OP it WILL grow back x

Pazuzu · 12/10/2021 15:53

I don't exactly have the choice anymore. Other people get inheritance, I get male pattern baldness. Damn you cruel world!!!

As it happens, he can carry the look so it's all good.

Upsky · 12/10/2021 16:00

Ooh I envy you all with long curly haired boys.
Mine two DSs (23 and 25) inherited my dead straight hair and both have it very short.
I once had curls. Lost my hair due to chemo and it grew back in fabulous soft curls. They only lasted 6 months and it went straight again.
In fact during lockdown 1 I bought clippers and sheared everyone including me.
I will say OP that if he wants to keep it at exactly 1mm or whatever it is, he'll be forever at the barber.

Amrapaali · 12/10/2021 16:04

@2bazookas WTF is a terrorist beard? That had better not mean what I think it means...

ElvisPresleyHadABaby · 12/10/2021 16:05

Surely he'll be cold! It's a summer hairstyle, not one to do just before winter! He does have a gorgeous curl pattern though, will look beautiful grown back out Grin

ancientgran · 12/10/2021 16:07

But pat yourself on the back, you brought him up as a strong confident man. He might grow it back but if not you will get used to it. I've got 3 sons, they've all got very short hair.

Improv · 12/10/2021 16:13

A very big beard?

muddyford · 12/10/2021 16:15

As a PP has said, I have never seen a man who looks better with a shaved head. They have weird bulges and look like an entrant in a competition for the potato most like a human head. And don't get me started on shaved head plus beard. Just why?! If you want to look as though your head is on upside down, do it regardless.

Oh bless him! He looks like a little dandelion with it all fluffed up like that.
FrankGrillosWrist · 12/10/2021 16:24

Gimmee a shaved head any day over old lady perm look. Apologies to any old ladies out there that I offend, it looks lovely on you but it's just not for the boy.

Hesma · 12/10/2021 16:25

Buy him a beanie for winter!

I like Afro hair, it’s not really old ladies you’re insulting.

But what is the AIBU?????

FindingMeno · 12/10/2021 16:38

He's the one being unreasonable if he's still living under your roof.
Your house, your rules Grin

Maharajah20 · 12/10/2021 16:42

Sorry I don’t like boys/men with long curly hair 🤷‍♀️
I am on at my 26 year old son to get his mop chopped at the moment, he has a job interview coming up and I think shorter hair looks much tidier.
TBF op your sons is a bit extreme but in a few weeks he will have a nice covering back on there!

iloveeverykindofcat · 12/10/2021 16:48

My mum cried when I cut my curls off.

I was twenty-six.

The school photo reminds of the time she left my dad to do my hair when she went to an evening job. He just wet it with water, then blowdried it. No oil or anything. I got it from his family, as well. I looked like I'd been electrocuted.
