My son have shaved his head. His beautiful beautiful curls are no more. 😭

He's 21.
Hair grows back.
It's his hair.
Yes I am being ridiculous.
I'm also blatantly abusing AIBU so you can have a pop at me for that too. 🤣

So how often do you see girls with short hair? I often had my hair short as a little girl and so did many of my school mates but I never see it now.

Often enough. Nobody shrieks in horror or calls it an abomination. Again, where is it that you’re from that thinks it is?

FedUpAtHomeTroels · 12/10/2021 13:32

I get the feeling OP, I hate when my grown boys cut their hair, especially the oldest as it doesn't suit him but it's his head, so I bite my tongue.

LoislovesStewie · 12/10/2021 13:32

My son has just done the same thing! Is it the fashion now?

Tenfifteen · 12/10/2021 13:34

Sad I have a similarly curled boy (but mine is 5!) He must never never never cut his curls. I feel weak looking at that so feel your pain! YANBU!

I’m from South Wales if that I helps you at all. And I hardly ever see girls with short heir, and I mean short short, not shoulder length. Rarely even see a bob.
CounsellorTroi · 12/10/2021 13:40

Also my original post said “almost an abomination” you seem to have not noticed. I never said people were “shrieking in horror” or actually calling it an abomination. Just meant that long hair seems compulsory for little girls these days.

MrsRobbieHart · 12/10/2021 13:47

But is it really “almost an abomination” when a girl has short hair where you live? Or is it just not common? Everything goes in trends. Long hair in girls is trendy right now. It doesn’t mean they aren’t allowed short hair or that it is an abomination. Just like it’s not an abomination if someone is still wearing skinny jeans now.

nonetcurtains · 12/10/2021 13:47

On the plus side, that's his Christmas present sorted - a nice selection of hats to keep him warm.

MinnieMountain · 12/10/2021 13:48

I’m not looking forward to DS having his long, wavy hair cut. He’s 7 and loves it currently.

Apparently my uncle got really upset when my granny had her waist-length hair bobbed in her mid-30’s. Hair is emotional stuff.

Tal45 · 12/10/2021 13:50

It'd hard to tell from the pic but it looks like his hair didn't have any cut or style before, much better now I think.

Giggorata · 12/10/2021 13:52

I've still got DS1's chopped waist length hair in a drawer somewhere, when he decided to stop playing rock music and get a job.

DS2 has a halo of curls, which he hated and cut short when young, but in his 40s now gives no shits.
It does give me the chance to utter the immortal PG Wodehouse line: “Why don't you get a haircut, you look like a chrysanthemum”

thesugarbumfairy · 12/10/2021 13:53

OP I feel your pain. He did have glorious hair. He has a nice noggin though!

Mind you, my stepDM was very upset when I had my thigh length hair cut off back in the 90s. She'd spend the last decade telling me it looked much neater in a bob!

and @allIamMaz how can anyone be bestowed with such incredible toddler curls? Seriously no-one over 4 years old should have such beautiful hair!

Usecoooomonsnse · 12/10/2021 13:54

@Fizbosshoes hope she donated to charity ?

JumperandJacket · 12/10/2021 13:54

Looks good both ways!

Thulian · 12/10/2021 14:00

I think we have been through a decade or two where all girls seemed to have long hair but i see it changing now. It's a big trend in both my preteen and teen's schools for boys to have long hair and a lot of girls are getting short hair. (And this is aside from the trans trend - though I think it may be partly inspired by it, which would be good if it means kids are starting to realise they can do whatever "gender" stuff they like without having to be trans)

Wroxie · 12/10/2021 14:01

As a Black woman I can say this - his hair wasn't very moisturised before and other Black people might have seen it as unkempt (maybe white people too but I absolutely don't care what other white people think).
No one is required to moisturise their hair and it shouldn't matter, just like it shouldn't matter if a woman wears makeup or if a man wears well-fitting clothes, but he'll probably get more positive attention with the new haircut.

RedMarauder · 12/10/2021 14:17

@CounsellorTroi what age?

I see girls under 11 with short hair regularly.

I know some of the younger ones have accidents with scissors....

Couchbettato · 12/10/2021 14:19

@TertiusLydgate

I live in fear of my sons chopping off their glorious curls. Shaving in particular. I often tell them they have weird shaped heads to put them off 😆

So YANBU.

Mum is that you?

My mother says this to my brother. Tells him he'll look like a squashed Sheldon Cooper.

Belsizepark · 12/10/2021 14:24

@IamMaz

This is mine - aged 29 and not had a hair cut since Covid. I took this photo of him after he'd driven to see me, soaking wet, from jumping into a local river with his mates!!! Didn't have a comb or hairbrush on him!!!
Honestly I’d kill for curls like that.
dottiedodah · 12/10/2021 14:27

Remember crying when my DS was taken to Barbers age about 7. Grew back .Recently my DH had a HC and I didnt like it ! Been longer for about 6 months .YANBU at all you know!

SallyWebsterr · 12/10/2021 14:28

he looks lovely both ways BUT...his curls were gorgeous and i would be sad too!!

maddening · 12/10/2021 14:32

He has a lovely back profile op 👍

TatianaBis · 12/10/2021 14:48

I’d be much less 😭 about a buzz cut than when they start losing their hair. That will officially mean we’re all old 👎🏼

NewlyGranny · 12/10/2021 14:55

I'd have cried. I did cry when DS's was cut - not shaved, though. He had gorgeous glossy fresh-chestnut ringlets. He was 17 when he decided to get it cut short.

The ringlets did get him a part in the school pageant, though, as a cavalier commander!

Only a mother can tell a man his head is too weird a shape for shaving, but you're rumbled when he does it anyway. I never in my life saw a man or boy who looked better for shaving their entire head. I think women occasionally do, weirdly, but only if they are fine-boned.

TheBillboardsAreLeering · 12/10/2021 15:05

My mum's always going on at me about my hairstyle choices (in a "jokey" way but a lot of truth is said in jest) and honestly it's really tiresome.
