Out a walk with DS sleeping the pram this morning and I get a call...it’s the Morrison’s delivery driver. He’s outside and there’s no answer at the door. Well, that’s because I’m not in and my delivery is scheduled for 12-1pm. He’s called at 10.35am.
There’s me then having to rush home (luckily we had just set out so we were only 5 mins away) but I live in a flat and had to then get sleeping DS out of the pram and into the house etc. Just a faff really.

VERY grumpy delivery man tells me I should be in if I’m expecting a delivery as he “doesn’t have all day” 🙄

I’ve had them being late before - these things happen but almost 1.5h early?!

My driver always calls ahead and asks if I want an earlier delivery. You should have said no.

whatswithtodaytoday · 11/10/2021 12:56

Yup, we have this with every supermarket we've ever used. I purposely book for 9-10pm so my child is safely asleep and won't be disturbed. They arrive at 8pm when he's just settling and gets woken up by the van. It's SO annoying!

BrilloPaddy · 11/10/2021 12:59

My SIL works for Asda and they're not allowed to be more than 15 minutes early for a delivery. He spends a lot of time sat in the cab waiting on the side of the road ...... and in the summer it's miserable as they don't have air con in the vans.

We use Waitrose and they're often early but I allow an hour each side of the slot as a rule of thumb.

What did he say when you pointed out he was early?

I always mention if they are late or early.

Lovelydovey · 11/10/2021 12:59

Ocado have always called to check if it’s ok - and accepted when it’s not! And when I go for early slots I sometimes see them sat outside waiting and then they will knock at 6am or 7am on the dot. I often turn the light on and wave out the window so they know they can deliver early if I’m up and spot them.

If I wanted to do this, I wouldn’t book a fixed time slot at a higher price. I’d book a flexi slot which are much cheaper. If they say between x&y, they should be there between those times.

PippaPots · 11/10/2021 13:02

Morrisons drivers used to ring and politely ask if an earlier delivery was convenient.
Recently there's a notification on the app saying you're the next on the round and to give the driver space to unpack, even if it's hours before the slot booked. I've cancelled my delivery pass as I was fed up of having a shitty call while on the school run asking why no one was answering the door.

Tesco is terrible round here. My mil has hassle weekly with her shop. This week it arrived 2 hours early at 6am, the week before it didn't turn up at all. She called for a refund, then discovered that they had rescheduled and it had been dumped the following morning on her doorstep. After being sat there all day most it it went into the bin. When she called yet again for a refund for the inedible stuff she was told to be around for deliveries. You need to stay in for days either side apparently.

Well why should they be early, we book a certain slot for a reason. We shouldn’t have to add an extra hour on to each side, sometimes it’s the only slot available
Missmissmiiiiiiiiisss · 11/10/2021 13:03

You should complain. I’ve had drivers call and ask if it was convenient to deliver earlier and have be perfectly polite on the occasions Ive had to say sorry no, I’m out.
They can ask but they should expect and certainly shouldn’t be rude.

BubbleCoffee · 11/10/2021 13:04

I'd be complaining to Customer Services. I don't mind them phoning to ask if they can come early, although I still find it somewhat annoying. But they should a) be polite and prepared to take no for an answer and b) not tell you self-importantly that they 'haven't got all day' as though you can't possibly be busy or doing anything worthwhile yourself Angry

Moonface123 · 11/10/2021 13:05

To be fair though must be a logistical nightmare 're the one hour time slots. If staff are off, the picks run late, same 're delivery drivers, then traffic, often M1 near us is choc a block, vans break down and then you get customers cancelling on the morning.

YanTanTetheraPetheraPimp · 11/10/2021 13:06

My last Tesco delivery was 4 hours late; I’d contacted CS and was told that the driver had ‘knocked but you weren’t in’- complete bs because I was actually working in the front garden! On line check said ‘delivered’

The driver when he finally arrived was unpleasant. I won’t be shopping there again.

Crunchymum · 11/10/2021 13:12

I did ask the driver today if he could return in the delivery slot and was told it would just be refunded

If he really did say that, then he needs reporting.
That is terrible.

I've had it quite often with Sainsburys - once they were 1.5h early and I was hosting a Teams meeting for 10+ people (so I couldn't take the calls asking me if they could deliver early and the driver just turned up anyway and started ringing the bell, which I had to ignore)

For the most part they do call me and if I don't answer, they came at the agreed slot.

Sparklesocks · 11/10/2021 13:13

That is poor. I get deliveries with Sainsbury’s and sometimes they arrive 10-15 mins or so which I don’t mind - before the slot but 90 mins is ridiculous!

At least it’s not just me it’s happened to, was getting confused by all the “Tesco’s always call before they deliver” comments, they certainly have never called me when they’ve been early!

@TurnUpTurnip

Tesco’s are awful for this, shop due between 10-11 was on school run but back by 9.15 told by neighbour a Tesco’s driver was knocking at my door so I missed the shop as they didn’t even bother to call me, I called Tesco’s to complain but they basically called me a liar and said the driver said he came at the right time and I wasn’t in 🤦🏻
I've had similar from British Gas. Due 2-4, got in from shops at 1:17 (yup this is scorched on my memory) to a "missed you" card. Rang to confirm the engineer would still come from 2-4, lady on the phone said yes as nothing had been put on the system. You guessed it, waited til 4 and no one came. Rang the number again and was told that the engineer had attended at 3:30 and no one home.

The reason I remember it being 1:17 is that I took a photo of the card on my phone so it could be timestamped and show he'd been early yet still got told I was wrong. Twats.

whynotwhatknot · 11/10/2021 13:18

i would complain about that and him getting huffy

if hes ahead of schedule thats fine but if the customer isnt it he should come back in the slot time

BigFatLiar · 11/10/2021 13:19

Use Tesco and Iceland, never had an issue. Must be down to local areas, also never had a problem with Hermes.

godmum56 · 11/10/2021 13:20

I do wonder how many delivery drivers do the turn up early then cancel thing because no one ever complains and similarly if you do complain, no one ever escalates. I am getting hard nosed about this now and if a CS person says there is nothing they can do, then I ask for my complaint to be formalised and escalated. I know its a time suck pursuing it but as is said on here CF's will get away with stuff while no one stops them.

couchparsnip · 11/10/2021 13:21

Tesco have always called ahead if they are early for me too. They are always thankful that I've agreed to take delivery early too. It must depend on the drivers I think and how they are trained.

yes, my hermes people are lovely, also amazon, DHL and so on.
LampLighter414 · 11/10/2021 13:21

I figure there is an incentive for the drivers to finish early - do they just get to go home and get paid for the full shift? I can't see why some of these stories (Tesco seem to be the main culprit) they are lying about turning up on time, being inflexible to come at the later time slot etc.

Tesco policy needs to be changed if so

Tesco has tracking in their vans, so that can be checked.
ApplesAreTheBaneOfMyLife · 11/10/2021 13:23

I used to have this with Ocado. I booked a regular 11:30-12:30 Thursday slot based on the fact that I was out every Thursday until 11. Every week they’d turn up an hour early and phone me and ask me to come back early, and sometimes get quite grumpy about it.

I cancelled my reserve slot and stopped using them.

AutumnAlmanack · 11/10/2021 13:24

Slightly off topic, but I had a very weird substitution from Sainsbury's last week - I ordered a chicken mini roast and was given salmon en croute!!!
