Out a walk with DS sleeping the pram this morning and I get a call...it’s the Morrison’s delivery driver. He’s outside and there’s no answer at the door. Well, that’s because I’m not in and my delivery is scheduled for 12-1pm. He’s called at 10.35am.
There’s me then having to rush home (luckily we had just set out so we were only 5 mins away) but I live in a flat and had to then get sleeping DS out of the pram and into the house etc. Just a faff really.

VERY grumpy delivery man tells me I should be in if I’m expecting a delivery as he “doesn’t have all day” 🙄

I’ve had them being late before - these things happen but almost 1.5h early?!

I use ocado and waitrose. Both will call me to see if I can accept early delivery but if I can't or if I don't answer then they deliver at the booked time. Same with Sainsburys. I would also be complaining about rudeness as i would with any other firm. If I wasn't home (or otherwise busy) I certainly wouldn't be rushing anywhere at the behest of a grumpy deliveryman and (as already said) would NOT be tolerating rudeness. While people tolerate it they will get away with it...and if the delivery was cancelled because of a failed early delivery attempt I'd also be complaining and publicly on social media too!

brokenbiscuitsx · 11/10/2021 12:16

Agree Tesco are bad at this too.

VERY grumpy delivery man tells me I should be in if I’m expecting a delivery as he “doesn’t have all day”

Shock I’d have told him that there’s a reason for 1 hour slots (so people can plan their day around the deliveries) otherwise there would just be day slots!

Cheeky bloody bastard, I’d be complaining to Tesco if I was you! I had to complain recently as my delivery just didn’t turn up at all!!

IcedCoffeeAlways · 11/10/2021 12:16

@EatYourVegetables they pull from a very small shop when delivering to our area unfortunately so the number of missing items and substitutions is always ridiculous.

Tescos is pretty good.

Yes, I've had a phone call from a delivery service before now asking if I mind if they come early.

That's polite, isn't it?

But a bullying tone just because you have gone out for a much needed break in the fresh air is simply not on.

I would have rushed back but complained afterwards.
And asked for some money off!

Walesrecommendations · 11/10/2021 12:20

Tesco drivers always ring me and ask if they can come earlier if they're running ahead. Its a time slot for a reason, they can't expect you to be in all day!

brokenbiscuitsx · 11/10/2021 12:21

Never had this problem with Asda.

Asda’s substitutes are shocking though, at least they were a couple years ago. We used to get silly subs like celery instead of broccoli but the worst was A4 paper instead of kitchen roll Confused

Sundancerintherain · 11/10/2021 12:22

I stopped using Tesco for this reason.
I had booked the 2-3 pm slot.
DH was abroad for work and I am disabled , sometimes use sticks and cant manage to get shopping. I worked 9-12 .
Got a call at 11:30 from the driver, erm, I'm at work can you come back at arranged time ?
Him, no I'll have to change it to click and collect.
Me, I cant collect.
Him - take it up with Customer Services!
To be fair the CS lady was lovely and the female driver who actually delivered was also lovely BUT lots of my friends/ colleagues had similar experiences with Tesco .

Shellingbynight · 11/10/2021 12:22

You're not being at all unreasonable, but if it wasn't convenient you should have refused to take early delivery. Ocado sometimes call and ask to deliver early, often that is fine but if I'm out I tell them what time I'll be back and they wait until then - and they are polite about it.

throwaway201809 · 11/10/2021 12:23

Tesco are always early for us but when they call they always tell me they're happy to wait until the slot I've booked. Most of the time I head straight home so they don't have to wait, however the times they've waited have been fine and driver has always been chill

NotMyCat · 11/10/2021 12:24

Sainsburys have always rung me first. Special mention to when I had to take the cat to the vet as an emergency and leave a note on the door as I was going to miss my delivery
He rang me and organised I could meet him at a nearby delivery drop, and loaded everything in the boot of my car so I didn't miss my delivery

PurpleSproutingSomething · 11/10/2021 12:28

I use Asda because they're pretty reliable, I hardly ever get substitutions, I just get no item.
I ordered a box of washing tablets and they just cancelled it. I would have been okay with something similar, same with wraps. At least I can say no if I don't want them.

So i've still had to go down to the local shops and buy the things they didn't send.

Dixiechickonhols · 11/10/2021 12:30

Ocado rang me last night to deliver early and I was grateful. I’d booked 10-11pm as we were away for weekend. We’d got an earlier train and we’re in so a 9.30 pm delivery was very welcome. Used to use Asda and they always delivered in time slot.
It’s fine to call and give you choice but they should honour slot. If you work mornings or have a class etc you will have deliberately booked a pm slot etc.

spiderlight · 11/10/2021 12:33

I've never had them turn up early without ringing to check first, with the exception of a lovely Waitrose driver who pulled up outside my house just over an hour early last week and then just sat there until I opened the front door to let my DS in, at which point he peeked round the van door and said 'I didn't want to knock so early in case you were having your tea'. He was just going to wait until 8 on the dot, bless him - he was so grateful that I was willing to take the delivery early because we were his last stop of the day, and I was pretty grateful too because it was our tea!

Chipsahoy · 11/10/2021 12:38

We use Morrison’s. They are early every week, however the driver always calls or texts first. Friendly lovely driver. So I’d complain if I were you.

FatsoGatso · 11/10/2021 12:43

@EvilRingahBitch

Ocado ring and say "I'm in your area is it OK if I turn up early?" but are happy to take "sorry but that's not possible" for an answer.
This is our experience too.

The amount of companies that don't understand that delivering early can be just as much a pita as delivering late!

Unsure33 · 11/10/2021 12:44

never had a problem with tesco at all .

EatYourVegetables · 11/10/2021 12:48

Sorry, meant to say: of course YANBU; write to their customer service and if you can switch to another supermarket.

YonderTweek · 11/10/2021 12:49

@TurnUpTurnip

Tesco’s are awful for this, shop due between 10-11 was on school run but back by 9.15 told by neighbour a Tesco’s driver was knocking at my door so I missed the shop as they didn’t even bother to call me, I called Tesco’s to complain but they basically called me a liar and said the driver said he came at the right time and I wasn’t in 🤦🏻
Ooh, this has happened to me so many times with Tesco. I wouldn't mind the turning up early/not turning up at all as such (although it is annoying), but it's the lies they come up with saying they had tried to knock but that I wasn't in. I always sit by the bloody window looking for the Tesco van when my deliveries are due so there's no chance I could miss them. Luckily Customer Services have been pretty good and offered vouchers whenever one of their drivers has gone rogue.
GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 11/10/2021 12:52

Had that a lot a while ago when I was using Ocado. Morrison’s were often late. At the moment I’m using Sainsbury’s who seem to be getting it right.

It is annoying as if you’d wanted that slot you’d have booked it!

LopsidedWombat · 11/10/2021 12:52

I shop with Ocado and about half of the time they are early but always call and very politely ask if its OK first! Used to use tesco and asda but so often there are items missing or loads of substitutes and I can't just pop to the shops so find ocado much more reliable (albeit expensive).

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 11/10/2021 12:53

Ocado ring and say "I'm in your area is it OK if I turn up early?" but are happy to take "sorry but that's not possible" for an answer.
This is our experience too.

Yes this is true of Ocado for me too - I didn’t explain properly - just meant they were often early

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 11/10/2021 12:54

Sorry bold fail

ginjenny · 11/10/2021 12:54

My OH is a Tesco delivery driver!
If he knows he's going to be early he will always ring ahead and see if it's convenient, if it's not, no problem to wait.
Approx 1.5 hours early is not acceptable and neither is being very grumpy!
Please call Morrison's customer services and complain!

MayorGoodwaysChicken · 11/10/2021 12:55

I stopped using Tesco after they just cancelled my online order for a full weekly family shop, around two hours beforehand on a bank holiday when the shops were all about to shut. No note of an apology just an email saying the order had to be cancelled. I called c/s to be greeted with basically a shrug. You would have thought as someone regularly spending £100 a week they would have apologised, explained and sent some vouchers. That was the last time I ordered with them.

We have since been using Waitrose which is surprisingly comparable on price if you go for own brand stuff (Tesco got more expensive while Waitrose seems to have stayed the same) and the customer service and quality is outstanding. On the off chance they want to come a few minutes early you get a call asking if it’s ok and the drivers are always lovely and friendly to my children who enjoy ‘helping’ unload. They also rush to refund any product that isn’t literally perfect even if you keep it, so often end up getting a few pounds off through that.

MayorGoodwaysChicken · 11/10/2021 12:56

You also get a text 15 mins before with Waitrose which is great while wfh as I don’t have to stay off calls etc for the full hour and get some warning of when they will arrive.
