DH nearly knocked woman flying

We were due to travel to Dublin and the security at the airport was ridiculously long - we were not going to make the flight. Once through security we literally sprinted to the gate, once there DH charged at the woman who was just closing the gate, she turned just in time to see him flying towards her and screamed “SHIT!!!” As he crashed into her - he caught her before she fell and breathlessly asked “we were stuck in security!”
She opened the gate back up and called the mini bus thing to come back whilst explaining that the two missing passengers had arrived - and nearly took her out in the process. I was mortified. The bus came back for us and the woman started laughing and said “Jesus, I need a drink”. I apologised profusely and she said it was ok, she just assumed she was being attacked for a minute. She then apologised for swearing (!!)
Once we were on the plane the pilot came on the tannoy apologising for the delay explaining that they had to wait for two late passengers. Everyone looked at us. I have never forgotten it and I do laugh when I think back but Christ, he could’ve been arrested!

Feeling shit today, AIbU to ask for your holiday disaster stories? (Lighthearted!!)

Also - AIbU to laugh about this now - years later - despite how “wrong” it was at the time?

As he crashed into her - he caught her before she fell and breathlessly

Do you have any published works?

WheelieBinPrincess · 11/10/2021 08:46

Luckily none that involve rugby tackling an unsuspecting member of staff to the floor, no.

Did your DH apologise?!

Thatsplentyjack · 11/10/2021 08:47

What was wrong about it? Did he mean to knock her over? Why would someone run at another person? I don't get it Confused

WheelieBinPrincess · 11/10/2021 08:51

I don’t have any airport ones- I am serene and organised Grin

But once going through security a woman was loudly exclaiming that someone had stolen her belt as she put it in the tray. She went absolutely nuts and it ended with her screaming and throwing her heels at the staff and she was marched off by security guards. They asked the man she was with if he wanted to stay with her or continue on his flight- he said ‘I’d like to get on that flight please’ and off he went- looking incredibly relieved that he’d got shot of her.

Mercurial123 · 11/10/2021 08:51

Is this Aer Lingus? It's happened a few times on flights I was on when passengers were late.

Oblomov21 · 11/10/2021 08:53

Good god, how embarrassing. Security at stanstead this Friday for a Ryanair flight to Lisbon was ridiculous. But people just said excuse me I'm going to miss my flight and edged their way to the front. No one minded. Maybe your Dh. And you. Should have been more assertive before?

Reallyimeanreally2022 · 11/10/2021 08:53

That poor women
Good on her for putting on a brave face

Your husband though Hmm

AmsterDAMN · 11/10/2021 08:54

Why didn't you speak to someone at security to get to the front? I'm surprised they weren't calling for you. Once they have your bags they need to get you on and a delay can cost thousands.
I've had this before - horribly long check in so stood in security ten minutes before flight. Showed staff the ticket and we went right through. Thankfully a small airport with a short walk to the plane.

Anyway, probably wouldn't get arrested for accidentally banging into someone

Reallyimeanreally2022 · 11/10/2021 08:54

Always baffled by people complaining about security

Surely everyone on same flight as you has been caught up in exactly the same queues but made it ok?

ShuddaBeenMe · 11/10/2021 08:54

Why did he charge at her? If she hasn't turned round would he have just pushed her out of the way?

Halfpace · 11/10/2021 08:58

@ShuddaBeenMe

Why did he charge at her? If she hasn't turned round would he have just pushed her out of the way?
Yes, what was he actually intending to do — physically prevent her from closing the door to the plane? Wouldn’t you have done better to explain to security staff that your flight was closing? The staff usually ask and expedite anyone running late in the queue.
GoBrookeYourself · 11/10/2021 08:59

DH and I are total opposites when it comes to travelling- I don’t like to loiter in airports and would rather get there as close to the flight time as possible and he’d rather be 8 hours early than risk missing the flight.

Our first holiday together (we hasn’t been dating long), I put my foot down and said we weren’t going to get there any earlier than x time before the flight (can’t remember how long now) and all was fine. Then I insisted we had time to mooch around the shops and get some breakfast and generally waste time. It got to the point where they were calling our names over the speakers telling us we had 5 minutes to get to our gate and I’ve not been allowed to be in charge of timings since.

Also when I was younger and going on holiday with my parents, it’s usually an hours drive to our nearest airport; this time took 5 hours. There were accidents EVERYWHERE. My dad, being the same mindset as me (which is where I got it from), hadn’t left a lot of wiggle room and the flight was at something like 3.30pm and we got to the airport for 4.30pm. We tried calling and explaining but were told they couldn’t just hold the plane for us. I don’t know how but we made it! They’d held the flight until about 5 minutes after we got there, we made it by the skin of our teeth and we’d been resigned to missing the whole holiday. Half the plane was empty (presumably from everyone else stuck on the motorway) and we got cheers when we got on the flight. Felt very lucky indeed that we made it but sooo bad for anyone who didn’t.

SheeceRearsmith · 11/10/2021 08:59

First holiday as a family and I grossly underestimated how long it would take to pack and get to the airport in the morning. Never been late to the airport in my life before. We knew we would miss it if we didn’t get to the front of the queue so just edged our way in and apologised profusely to the kind passengers behind us. As a poster above said - no one minded. Still ended up running across the tarmac to the waiting plane! As it was people were still getting themselves into their seats when we boarded so we escaped extreme mortification. Just! Never again. I’ll always pack properly the night before.

Mychitchatdays · 11/10/2021 09:01

Only way you'd have been getting on my flight is if we hadn't found your luggage yet. It's not as simple as just opening up the gate again. So many people evolved in the process.

Have you READ the post? He didn't mean to knock her over. They were trying to get through the gate and she was in the process of closing it.

OP is asking for your holiday disaster stories, not for opinions about what happened to her.

You'd find you 'got it' a lot better if you read it.

Laurapb88 · 11/10/2021 09:03

I remember when me and my ex were going on our first holiday abroad alone it was the honey moon we never got splashed out to go in the private lounge and everything as we were about to board the plane there was two police officers stood waiting with a bit of paper in hand and we heard them say that's him my ex is 6ft. 4 so you can't miss him any way they stopped him like they were going to arrest him until they checked his passport we were both petrified I can laugh now but it wasn't funny preparing to fly to Turkey for two weeks alone Grin

Pythonista · 11/10/2021 09:03

Did everyone applaud?

YourFinestPantaloons · 11/10/2021 09:04

God I've done this before, me and mum were sampling perfumes in duty free when we heard our names being called Shock we just lost track of the time! I remember sprinting to the gate and mum - who 'doesn't do running' - casually meandering behind me saying "we've paid for our tickets it won't leave without us" Hmm and then when we got on the plane she loudly complained there were no two seats together. FFS mother, never travelled with her since Grin

Bluntness100 · 11/10/2021 09:09

How odd, this was years ago? Why did he charge her?

10yearwarranty · 11/10/2021 09:12

Light hearted thread goes wrong...

Soubriquet · 11/10/2021 09:13

I was a teen and feeling really ill and going through security to come home.

Had one of those metal detectors waved over me and of course it beeped near chest. Security guard raised her eyebrows, leaned forward and pinged my bra-strap before waving me forward. I was too ill to care but I would have been mortified if I was aware of what she had done

Fluffypastelslippers · 11/10/2021 09:18

It's all a bit much for something that happened years ago - do you tell this story often? Try to make it sound comical when actually what really happened was you were in a hurry and he bumped into someone?

As an aside, how could he have been arrested?

Mummyoflittledragon · 11/10/2021 09:20

YABU
Physically disabled woman here. Chronic pain sufferer. A man crashing “accidentally” into a woman on heels just to avoid paying for another couple of tickets isn’t funny. If a person “accidentally” did this to me, it could set me back years and cost me thousands in physio appointments.

UnemotionalVelvet · 11/10/2021 09:28

Yet again, MN has a humour bypass...

I don't think it's a bit much. The OP is recounting an embarrassing moment from her past, in a lighthearted way, on an Internet forum.

Some people really need to lighten up.
