DH nearly knocked woman flying

We were due to travel to Dublin and the security at the airport was ridiculously long - we were not going to make the flight. Once through security we literally sprinted to the gate, once there DH charged at the woman who was just closing the gate, she turned just in time to see him flying towards her and screamed “SHIT!!!” As he crashed into her - he caught her before she fell and breathlessly asked “we were stuck in security!”
She opened the gate back up and called the mini bus thing to come back whilst explaining that the two missing passengers had arrived - and nearly took her out in the process. I was mortified. The bus came back for us and the woman started laughing and said “Jesus, I need a drink”. I apologised profusely and she said it was ok, she just assumed she was being attacked for a minute. She then apologised for swearing (!!)
Once we were on the plane the pilot came on the tannoy apologising for the delay explaining that they had to wait for two late passengers. Everyone looked at us. I have never forgotten it and I do laugh when I think back but Christ, he could’ve been arrested!

Feeling shit today, AIbU to ask for your holiday disaster stories? (Lighthearted!!)

Also - AIbU to laugh about this now - years later - despite how “wrong” it was at the time?

Don’t think OPs husband meant to knock into her. He did catch her so didn’t actually knock her over. There’s been a few times I’ve been in a blind panic being late for something and nearly smashed into someone. I’d of been so embarrassed 😂

ImNotDancing · 11/10/2021 09:56

@Fluffypastelslippers do you need to go back to bed? I think you need to move on with your day pickle

Tilltheend99 · 11/10/2021 09:57

Myself and my now DH checked into our room at a French hotel. Straight away the inside door handle fell off leaving us unable to get the door open.

DH rang down to reception and told them. The bloke on reception okay thanks the maintenance man will be in in two days time to take a look at it Grin

Eventually DH managed to explain why that wouldn’t work and someone came to open the door.

We had a near disaster last month. Staying in a cottage in a seaside town. It was our wedding anniversary and we’d booked afternoon tea at a hotel some 45 minutes’ drive away. So off we went, glorious sunny day, lovely afternoon tea in a fabulous country/lakeside setting. Went for a walk, DH suddenly says he can’t find the key to the cottage. So we looked in the hotel, retraced our steps on our walk, no sign of the key. So we set off back to the cottage, worried sick now in case we’d left the key in the door. As we drove down the hill towards the cottage we realised that not only was the key in the door, but the door was open! And miraculously nothing had been stolen. This was a busy road leading down to the harbour with people walking past all the time but thankfully none of them were opportunist burglars. There was a laptop of ours, the cottage TV and some other stuff, bottle of wine on the kitchen counter just inside the door still there. Just as well DH didn’t realise he didn’t have the key before we had tea otherwise our day would have been ruined.

You know it's ok for different people to have different opinions?

Years ago I flew to stay with friends in the US for Xmas. I had to change flights in JFK, and was waiting for my flight when a very good looking bloke came and sat next to me and we started chatting. We were having a lovely chat and then he said 'so why are you heading to Buffalo for Xmas?' I said I wasn't, I was flying to Pittsburgh. The poor bloke went white as he'd assumed I was on the same flight as him. He was so busy chatting he'd missed his flight. He ran off in a panic......it was Xmas Eve and flights were packed. No idea what happened to him after that!

CounsellorTroi · 11/10/2021 10:07

DH and I once accidentally went to the gate for the JFK - Gatwick flight rather than the Heathrow one. That necessitated a mad dash across the airport but we did get the flight.

ImNotDancing · 11/10/2021 10:08

@Fluffypastelslippers absolutely I do I just think it’s weird for you to hang around on the thread being mardy after you’ve expressed your distaste for it

PoshWatchShitShoes · 11/10/2021 10:08

My friend and I went on a mini break to Berlin years ago. The very stern airport security lady gave my friend a thorough pat down as she went through. When the security lady turned to me, I did a dramatic hand gesture and sang "check it out" in my best Black Eyed Peas voice...

She definitely did. I got the biggest death stare and a very stern body pat down. I'm really grateful she didn't drag me off for a strip search for being so cheeky 😂

Then there was the time my friend and I flew to Singapore. They had massive bowls of the fruity foxes sweets next to passport control. You'd usually take one or two. She dared me to take every single sweet in the bowl. I did...about 1kg of sweets...and the very lovely passport guy happily asked me if I wanted him to get me more 😂

Pythonista · 11/10/2021 10:08

As he crashed into her - he caught her before she fell and breathlessly asked “we were stuck in security!”

So he didn't see her until he crashed into her but magically was able to catch her.

FrankieDobie · 11/10/2021 10:13

Went to USA with my ex mother in law. She’s a joker and I warned her not to mess around with the American immigration officers. They asked us loads of questions and then asked her when sfe intended to leave the states … she replied “Never!! Haha”. He was not amused and we got hauled off for further questioning.

CharityDingle · 11/10/2021 10:15

I should have realised it was going to be a disaster when our first plane was delayed at Heahtrow and a nun got her guitar out...

That line made me genuinely lol.
A few years ago, I saw a woman at a departure gate being informed by staff that her flight was with another airline, albeit the same destination. She wasn't giving in easily though. I think she thought she could still travel on the flight that she didn't have a ticket for. I presume they eventually convinced her otherwise.
I also saw a stand-off where passengers were being asked to hand over luggage that they had planned to take aboard, in order that it could be put in the hold instead. I don't know what happened in the end, because neither side was budging. The flight left on time anyway, so someone won or lost the argument.

SofiaMichelle · 11/10/2021 10:20

@Pythonista

As he crashed into her - he caught her before she fell and breathlessly asked “we were stuck in security!”

So he didn't see her until he crashed into her but magically was able to catch her.

And he asked her "we were stuck in security!"?

What an odd question to ask her - she wouldn't have had a clue where you'd been.

RantyAunty · 11/10/2021 10:21

I was exhausted when I got to the airport.

Got through and at the gates which were at the very end. It was so packed the queues waiting to board. Probably 800 people easily.

I just joined the queue that had my row letter and just slowly inched forward with the crowd thinking about how nice it'd be to get to my seat and sleep.

I get to the front and hand her my boarding pass and started down the PBB. I get to the plane entrance and the attendant looks at my ticket and tells me I'm on the wrong flight to Hong Kong.

Turns out they were boarding 2 747s using all 4 gates at the end and mine was the other gate. I ran back out and over to the gate and got on the correct flight to KL.

Miniestelle · 11/10/2021 10:23

No, I wouldn't still find it funny.

Do you have any published works?*

I wouldn't expect so if the quality of the writing is like this

Faevern · 11/10/2021 10:26

@PoshWatchShitShoes
I fly Berlin regularly they are indeed scary but efficient. I’ve lost count how many times I’ve been stopped or questioned.

TheOrigRights · 11/10/2021 10:27

@Reallyimeanreally2022

Always baffled by people complaining about security

Surely everyone on same flight as you has been caught up in exactly the same queues but made it ok?

Not if they left more time than the OP. I am a 'seat of pants' traveller, I allow enough time, but don't allow for unexpected delays. I've been trapped in long security queues, probably with some people on the same flight and many on flights which are not leaving for another 5 hours.
itsallgoingpearshaped · 11/10/2021 10:29

YABU. If it had been me who had been knocked over and many other older people, they would have struggled to come back from that due to existing conditions. There's no excuse for running at someone like that. He knew she was there. He lost control of himself and that's just not acceptable.

Miniestelle · 11/10/2021 10:29

It wasn't "wrong" it was wrong. You must have better funny stories to remember than this.

Minfilia · 11/10/2021 10:30

Holiday 1 with the DC - made the mistake of letting DH keep hold of the documents and boarding cards for all of us. He lost my passport post security. I got escorted back through by a lovely security lady and after 45 minutes we found my passport at the check in desk.

Holiday 2 - without DC - travelling to the US, DH had a new passport and forgot to get an ESTA. I had to go through by myself whilst he applied online. He appeared on the plane 5 minutes before we were due to take off as it was approved just in time.

Holiday 3 - booked connecting flights. First flight was late but we had plenty of time. Nope - our second flight was an hour earlier than we thought. But it was fine, we got off the first plane and onto the bus to take us to the terminal… which promptly crashed.

DH is a jinx and travelling abroad with him now sets me on edge Grin

chocolatecentral6 · 11/10/2021 10:33

Didn’t something similar happen in Home Alone 2? 🤣

Neonplant · 11/10/2021 10:34

If you were delayed by security you didn't leave enough time to heth through so Yabu to think that's not on you. I'd be absolutely fucking mortified if my husband did this. Does he normally throw his weight around with women or customer service workers?

What was he thinking?

Neonplant · 11/10/2021 10:36

@OneFlewOverTheOwlsNest

Well this thread cheered me up just as intended 😁 both the accounts of people who took the thread in the spirit it was intended and the sour faces who can’t wait to piss on someone’s cornflakes 😂
I suppose there's those of us who think being married to a twat is funny then there's those of us who don't.

Ultimately your husband behave like a dick and you don't like people pointing this out.

rookiemere · 11/10/2021 10:40

I don't understand people who leave it until the last minute to get to the airport, then expect others to give way to them as the rush through security etc.

Thankfully I've now converted DH and we generally arrive early enough to have a meal before boarding.
