I feel like at 48, I have really started to age- creepy neck, a bit jowly, going a bit grey and not feeling great to be honest! I look after myself - don’t really drink as I see it on my face, wear nice clothes, nice hair etc but it’s becoming an effort ☹️ Wasn’t expecting it actually!! I always thought I looked pretty good for my age. I know it’s vain and I shouldn’t care but it’s just weird!!

@Mirw Dwpwnds on your definition of "looking older". To me, any lines or wrinkles sagging are a sign of ageing. I doubt your gran avoided those until she was 85?

honeylulu · 09/10/2021 19:22

About 36 when I realised my body shape was changing though my weight wasn't; more fat on my tummy and waist including at the back.

In my early-mid 40s I seemed to have a surge of attractiveness. I think it's partly because I stopped battling to stay at 8 stone and my face and cleavage filled out a bit. Now 47 and I seem to have developed frown lines and the start of a turkey neck in the last year so I think my late surge of looking good has expired.

and your genes

Its genes. I did all the right things, drank lightly, never smoked, sunscreen and wide brimmed hats, eat well and healthily, exercise.

None of it stopped face sag. My face is going the same way as my Dad's. Whereas I have friends who look so much more youthful as their face has held up. Its just your genes.

You can make things worse through excessive sun exposure etc, but your genes are the key determinant.

Is " face sag " even important?
I am a small size 10, I clamber up stairs fast at 3 at a time. I push big weights at the gym, I do Vinyasa flow yoga. I climb trees. My long hair is glossy. My face is a small part of my body.

fatimashortbread · 09/10/2021 21:20

I am 56 still don't feel or look old

No offence, but when I read this I visualised Julie Walters saying these words in a Victoria Wood sketch. As you were.

Could never parachute from plane, I would suffocate due to my face turning inside out.

Persephonee · 09/10/2021 22:05

39 .. downward slope from then ...

honkytonkheroe · 09/10/2021 22:15

I'm 52 now and say it started at about 45.

Alpacinoshoohaa · 09/10/2021 22:20

Butter flying wing I also agree.. I'm not giving in yet either.

Max14165 · 10/10/2021 08:08

I look back at pictures of my 50th birthday and I don’t really recognise myself .. I’m now 56..
Menopause, a total knee replacement and a sedentary job added the pounds, the wrinkles and the feeling that middle age is truly upon me .. I even started wearing comfy knickers and a support bra !!!! So I’m guessing that’s it !!!! Confused

speakout · 10/10/2021 08:18

I am yet to feel that I am "really starting to age".

I have a few wrinkles, but I have no difference in my body - same body I had in my 20s.
I am 59.

Benjispruce4 · 10/10/2021 08:44

I’m nearly 51, and same weight as 25. Yes I can see ageing but I’m not giving in. Exfoliate, don’t buy the next size up, never surrender!Grin

vivainsomnia · 10/10/2021 09:32

Yep, the menopause adds 10 years in 6 months!

Lack of good restorative sleep, skin loosing elasticity and that's that.

I find that the sane exercise regime I did 2 years before the menopause with ease is now like running a marathon every week. Takes days to recover. I never know how I'll feel the next day and it can be anything from not too bad to unable to get off the sofa all day.

I have finally accepted that it won't ever be the same but that it doesn't mean giving everything up yet and I'm still determined to remain fit.

speakout · 10/10/2021 09:46

I feel fitter post menopause- I do 6 gym classes a week. Sunday is my day off from exercise.

Benjispruce4 · 10/10/2021 09:58

I think expectation plays a part. I have a colleague who at 62 and she is stylish, slim and fit, still working out, runs 5k regularly. That’s my example. I’d you expect that everything packs up with menopause, it will.

Benjispruce4 · 10/10/2021 09:58

If not I’d.

Ah come on now, the face is everything, not just aesthetically/visually but as a reflection of character, state of mind, mood, etc.
Onedaylikethis21 · 10/10/2021 11:11

Thanks for all your comments- only just catching up now. Maybe I am feeling old cos of perimenopause- I feel a bit defeated and like I have no mojo and it’s maybe impacting on how I look too- friends on HRT say that has helped them. Pandemic hasn’t helped me either!

Face sag is important to some people as this thread shows . You have a different emphasis on being a " small size 10 " not a medium or large one ? Each to his own ?
CambsAlways · 10/10/2021 22:25

I’d say from 60 but I’m not really vain and accept it, eat healthy, and try to do what I can, very positive person, good nights sleep, drink plenty of water, non smoker, to be honest I’m very glad I’m still here, after hearing so many have passed away from covid, try to keep my sense of humour, and have some great friends

DogsandCatsB4u · 10/10/2021 22:43

I’m 32 and have no wrinkles, good skin and no aches some of you need to take better care of your self if you are aging at 32

GinJeanie · 11/10/2021 03:32

In my case, mid-40s when peri set in and I developed a fat back and beard. I find my failing eyesight useful when looking in the mirror though - the soft-focus makes me look quite dewy and youthful! 🥸

LorenzoVonMatterhorn · 11/10/2021 06:48

I asked my mum this question this weekend and she said when she hit 72. I mentioned this thread and she said we are being ridiculous and are all very young. You're not ageing until you're 70.

SirChenjins · 11/10/2021 09:18

I think it’s all different stages of ageing. I definitely feel older since I hit the peri menopause in my late forties - and talking to my friends we all feel the same. Even though we’re fit and healthy, working full time and looking after elderly parents and dealing with teenage children takes its toll. I remember my mum saying that she started noticing small things starting to go wrong physically at 60. Unfortunately she died of cancer at 70 so she didn’t get to find out how she felt in that decade. My MIL is 90 and sharp as a tack, but definitely old - she’d tell your 72 your old mum that she’s very young Grin
