I feel like at 48, I have really started to age- creepy neck, a bit jowly, going a bit grey and not feeling great to be honest! I look after myself - don’t really drink as I see it on my face, wear nice clothes, nice hair etc but it’s becoming an effort ☹️ Wasn’t expecting it actually!! I always thought I looked pretty good for my age. I know it’s vain and I shouldn’t care but it’s just weird!!

49 - ie this past year. Think I’m only peri rather than actual menopausal altho hard to be sure with Mirena in situ. But I ache… I gain weight easily, my hair is much greyer (have had to change hair dye to one to cover grey better), getting up most nights to wee.. if I sit on the floor, I struggle to get up. I think losing the couple of extra stone I’m carrying would help tho.

When I feel down at the ageing process I think of my lovely friend who died at 31 and then realise that growing older is a blessing

Ddot · 08/10/2021 21:09

40 you get aches, fifty you get menopause fifty five you wake up and some bastard has stolen the elastic from your body, plus your face is like a melted welly. 😉

LoisLane66 · 08/10/2021 21:09

The menopause and it's mother, the peri, passed me by unnoticed. Apart from my periods stopping nothing else happened. Hair still really thick and no change in my ability to do things requiring energy/effort. I do walk a lot and don't smoke drink or eat meat or shellfish. Apart from that I do love sleeping and have no trouble getting 8-9 hours. Sometimes use This Works sleep spray which does really work...for me anyway.

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHaands · 08/10/2021 21:09

Oh and my eye sights gone to fuck. Doing the mad juggle between multi focal and distance contacts and reading glasses.. great fun
@speakout what kind of yoga is hard core? I somehow find all the yoga classes that I’ve tried too soft and pointless (although I’m not that good wit my balance)
Vinyasa flow or Hatha have given me fab arm definition

ParkheadParadise · 08/10/2021 21:13

@Moonface123

When you have lost a lot of young people in your life, these conversations really grate.
This thread doesn't grate on me as I said in my previous comment, I aged when I lost my dd, but that doesn't stop me from wanting to look good.

I have regular facials, botox and spend money on expensive skincare. I also have my hair and nails done weekly.

speakout · 08/10/2021 21:22

OverByYer - is right.

There are many forms of yoga. Some is gentle, soft, often a general type. Brilliant for older, beginners, post partum, those with injuries, or looking for something relaxing.
Other types of yoga harder, and some very demanding. The Astanga, Vinyasa, dynamic or flow will be an aerobic workout , and very demanding on muscles. Movements may be fast, deep, requiring a combination of strength, flexibility and balance in one pose or a sequence of poses. I do body pump- but some of my yoga classes are much harder than weight training.
Have a look at this video of a woman in her 40s if you think yoga is easy

For me having had a difficult life and finally getting the help I needed I always say "I got my head together and my body fell apart"

I know I don't look my age: I'm 59+ 1 and I will stay 59+ whatever number until I'm ready.

Everyone thinks I'm mid to late 40s. I don't dress, act etc my age. Even though I have health issues ì don't walk around looking like a bag lady.

When I look in the mirror first think in the morning- eek

Having said that please also embrace it. I lost my husband nearly 4 years ago unexpectedly. He was 60. I also lost a friend who was 47 at the times some years ago and another at the age of 39

Growing older is denied to many as I personally unfortunately know too well

SallyWD · 08/10/2021 21:39

I'm 46 and think I still look quite youthful. Yes I have a crepey neck and lines around my eyes but I think I could pass for 40 (hope I'm not being too deluded here!). I really think the major change comes after menopause. At 50 no one could believe my mum's age. They all thought she was in her 30s! However a few years later, post menopause, she had aged dramatically. I'm expecting the same to happen to me.

JK59 · 08/10/2021 21:47

I was in the best shape I've ever been at 57; my skin and physical shape was ideal. Then after a major family emotional trauma a year later, plus a couple of minor surgeries ... Aaargh. At 62, I don't recognise my younger self. I'm trying not to dwell on it, but oooooh it's not easy!

Ddot · 08/10/2021 22:13

Found out I was poorly at 47 aged dramatically over the next two years. I could pass for ten year younger but with that and menopause, thats no longer the case. Face looks like an unmade bed

Phoenixrising1 · 08/10/2021 22:32

@LeaveYourHatOn

48. I've really noticed it in the last year. I don't know how much of it is due to lockdowns/covid/general shite and how much is natural, but I feel like I've aged 5 years in the last 12 months. It's really depressing actually.
48 too

Pre covid youthful 46
Post covid decrepit 48

DS friend saw me with him recently and thought I was his nan Shock

Goldiemummy · 08/10/2021 22:34

I would say once I turned 50. My face is getting more lines and I feel tired during the afternoon now,

dogsrock15 · 08/10/2021 22:36

I've gone from being told I look around 19 l(I'm 32) to in the last year ageing horrifically. i would say I now look my age. winkles have just come out of nowhere. it's awful.

nopuppiesallowed · 08/10/2021 22:37

@Branchlight
Organic coconut oil is your friend. Use a little every day. A real help.

ParkheadParadise · 08/10/2021 22:42

There was 15 years between me and Dd1 everyone thought we were sisters I bloody hated it😂
When I had Dd2 at 38 everyone thought I was her granny 😂😂

Libraryghost · 08/10/2021 22:45

I panicked at the age of 45 and went down the Botox and fillers route. I used a top doctor ( well known) because I was concerned about looking unnatural. I was over a thousand pounds lighter when I left her office and I probably looked slightly better for maybe a couple of months? But I also noticed lines on my face that weren’t there before because I was using different muscles. I just felt a bit weird. I wanted my old face back in the end.I wish I had spent the the money on a holiday, that would have made me happier. I have accepted aging now, I don’t like it but I have realised you cannot fool Mother Nature. That bitch wins every time.

Esspee · 08/10/2021 22:57

It’s as your oestrogen supplies start to diminish you age faster.
(That’s one of the reasons I’m staying on HRT for life - 32 years up to now)

ChinstrapBobblehat · 08/10/2021 23:18

Early fifties, definitely.
Was in great shape at 49 (v fit, strong and lean) and looked a fair bit younger, but the gradual slippage in every year beyond that has sadly accumulated so that 5 yrs on I now look and feel much older.
Big metabolism shift, much harder to control weight, much harder to build and maintain muscle strength and tone, soooo much more tired generally, drier hair, drier skin, drier foof, lower libido - the whole shebang.
It’s not the end of the world - I mean, it’s still possible to scrub up and look good, but Christ it’s so much more effort. And frankly I now give zero shits one way or the other, which is just one of the beautiful benefits of ageing Grin

Miseryl · 08/10/2021 23:23

I don't like being told to embrace ageing because some people die young, it's very patronising. You can be thankful to be alive but still hate ageing.

Absolutely this.

The alternative to not ageing is a lot worse.

Toomuchtrouble4me · 09/10/2021 00:38

Between 50 and 55 I turned into a different person. I always looked pretty much the same until 50 and then WHAM. By 55 (now) I’ve transformed. It’s crap but I’ve lost some beautiful people along the way and I’m grateful and blessed to be alive. It’s really weird being invisible though.

Toomuchtrouble4me · 09/10/2021 00:45

The odd thing is - I’m 4 stones lighter than I was 10 years ago when I wore a dress which had a fitted top but then flowed. I now can’t get that dress to fit over my bust! But I’ve lost 4st since then. How?

Toomuchtrouble4me · 09/10/2021 00:47
