And before you all start I know that there are 101 very good reasons why some parents can't take their children.

But some could and just choose not to and I think that's sad for their children and sad for the school.

can't yo just take a limited amount to the school fair and when its gone it is gone.

LittleSleighBellasRinging · 08/12/2007 22:22

I'm so gobsmacked by the question, it's not even unreasonable.

It's just wierd.

Sad? That people choose different leisure activities to other people? Sad?

EricScrooge · 08/12/2007 22:24

We have a golden rule of only attending a school event if one of my DD's are actually doing something in it.

Otherwise it is just tedious crap with all the same faces there whose lives are just talking about their kids and knowing everything that is going on.

I can't believe the amount of crap we are invited to at this time of year.

I'll just leave it to the gossiping saddos thanks. There are plenty of them about anyway.

emkana · 08/12/2007 22:26

Oh ffs it's not about choosing between cinema and bowling! It's about raising money for stuff that YOUR CHILDREN will benefit from!

You're right, i can't be arsed.

I could insist seeing as i'm scum on benefits (that does mean according to most MNers i am scum, doesn't it?) that i don't pay anything towards the double costs of school trips for my twins, but i choose to pay it instead. And not go to tw@tting school fairs.

EricScrooge · 08/12/2007 22:28

I just give them money to spend. Simple.

We are there at every event they are taking an active part in but other than that - i would rather stay nome at pluck some nasal hair.

madamez · 08/12/2007 22:29

Not every family feels a 'community' feeling about the school anyway. Remember that a lot of people don't have much if any choice about what school their kids attend - they go to that school because it's the only one in the area and the parents either can't home ed or don't even know it's possible: if you get your 'community' feeling from activities outside the school then why should you feel pressured to attend events that are not compulsory.

camillathechicken · 08/12/2007 22:35

so how many events is it ok to attend, for you to have done your bit for the school? 3, 4, 5 or is one a year enough?

EricScrooge · 08/12/2007 22:41

Don't get me started on those School Board types................

camillathechicken · 08/12/2007 22:41

i still stand by everything i said though

Judy1234 · 08/12/2007 22:41

I can't be bothered. I used to. I'm in year 23 of mother hood and I've been to loads of Christmas fairs but now I'm just sick to death with them so I get someone else to take them and everyone is happy.

SantasUnderGodzillasBumcheek · 08/12/2007 22:45

Doodledotoo, nobody actually says it, but there seem to be several threads where it is implied.
The comments about people buying actual christmas presents for their kids instead of giving them a stick to play with at Christmas.
The thread about single mums. The people who imply because all is not tikkedy boo in their life that others should be damn well miserable. You know the type. Of course there are as many (if not more) MNers who aren't prejudiced - but the horrid ones have stuck in my mind too much recently. Sorry.

I didn't go to the Christmas fair last Friday, in fact I don't think I have ever gone to the Christmas fair. Why? Because it's on at 3.30pm, and I am at work. I gave the children £5 each and sent them in with a bottle of wine each for their mufti day and they went with their childminder. ds spent his money is about 10 seconds on the bottle tombola, so I guess some people might have thought he was a poor sad thing (luckily his rugby class was still held that night so he missed the first hour of the event). I go to the summer fair which is held on a Saturday (and the children spend ridiculous amounts of money) and pay for raffles etc, but as for many others the Christmas fair is not for me. Does that mean I don't appreciate the PTA enough, well maybe, but I'm afriad that's how life goes. Luckily no-one asked me my thoughts on the matter - not sure what I would have said, but yes it might have been along the lines of not "bothering" to work three hours at the week-end in order to take the time off on the Friday.

Swedes2Turnips1 · 08/12/2007 22:49

I bought a Christmas Pudding for £7.75 at the school Christmas Fayre. I noticed in M&S today that the Luxury one (the same size) is £5.99 and the standard one is just £3.99. I wouldn't mind but the pudding is not very good at all (I know because I bought one last year).

If the people spent the money they had saved by not going to the school fair in towards the Hall curtains or whatever, wouldn't that be better?
