To think the monarchy will end at Charles?

I've just noticed a lot of republican talk recently (prompted by the other thread on the earth shot prize, also generally twitter and recent republican stuff happening in Wales) and I wonder whether it's because I'm in an echo chamber? Or is MN also an echo chamber? Either way. Are you a royalist or a republican?

Personally I feel the royal family is worth the money spent but should be kept out of politics. Kind of like other european monarchies.

But then on the other hand by dissolving the aristocracy wouldn't we be solving the problems of inequity in society?

I don’t know, but when you say end at Charles, end how? Do you think he’ll abolish the monarchy himself? Does William then get a say?
I think William and Kate are quite popular.

CatKittyCatCatKittyCatCat · 06/10/2021 00:42

I think a lot of respect has gone recently over Prince Andrew.

NumberNineTwo · 06/10/2021 00:46

I would vote to abolish them. We should be aiming for a meritocracy. Not giving the top jobs to one single family generation after generation, regardless of ability or behaviour. I don’t agree with being ruled by someone I didn’t vote for. At least a president can be removed if necessary.

Marcipex · 06/10/2021 00:46

PA is obviously a complete tosser; most of the family must be excruciatingly embarrassed by him.

SpindleWhirl · 06/10/2021 01:01

Andrew and the Queen's actions around him recently have made my heart harden against the royal family.

Who gets to be the last monarch I do not know. But I am personally revolted by them all.

MoChridhe · 06/10/2021 01:21

It definitely needs to end. It's all a big con, I bet they laugh at the masses every night all curtsying and bowing to them all day long whilst they carry on enriching themselves and hiding a sex predator in their many palaces. How many palaces does one need?

Cwenthryth · 06/10/2021 01:22

Abolishing monarchy and dissolving aristocracy are two very different things….unless you’re planning on seizing assets etc, then just removing titles will solve precisely nothing in terms of social inequality. The only benefit I can see to abolishing monarchy is taxpayer savings - and I’m not sure that is significant enough for wholescale change of how our country works. I’d support limiting our funding of the family before abolishing the system all together. I like having a ceremonial head of state, and our PM answering to them (even if it is mostly courtesy), and Parliament and Lords. I wouldn’t want Boris Johnson having the same level of power that POTUS has for example.

MoChridhe · 06/10/2021 01:49

I would rather be answerable to an elected politician than a head of state whose only merit is that they came out of a royal womb. They could be the thickest person in the country and we would still have to bow to them.

FluffyWhiteBird · 06/10/2021 02:10

I like the royals

480Widdio · 06/10/2021 02:15

I have no respect for the Queen,,the way she is protecting Andrew is despicable.

I hope the Monarchy ends, there is little support for it now.

GiantHaystacks2021 · 06/10/2021 02:19

No, they'll never go.
Not quietly anyway.
The establishment and their voters prop up the monarchy and honestly there would need to be a full scale revolution, on the scale of the French one, to make it happen.

Atmywitsend29 · 06/10/2021 02:51

Personally I'd be happy if the monarchy died with the Queen.

Oaktree1952 · 06/10/2021 03:17

The thought of a president is absolutely abhorrent to me. I much prefer the idea that the "top job" is not fought over and someone is brought up trained to do it. It's right that we vote for parliament and PM etc but it's also right that they have someone to answer too.

I also don't think we would notice any tax reduction if we got rid of the monarchy but we would loose a lot of our identity as a county.

I agree that the actions of one or two of the family have not been acceptable and maybe there needs to be something put in place but to get rid of the monarchy would be very short sighted.

1forAll74 · 06/10/2021 03:18

A paired down monarchy might be better., as in removing those that don't contribute anything, or not much, to the royal set up.

Flunked · 06/10/2021 03:25

Same.
Saoirse82 · 06/10/2021 03:27

I'll be glad to see the back of the lot of them.

Cattitudes · 06/10/2021 03:56

I consider whether in 1000 years we will have a monarchy, probably not. In that case will we have a monarchy in 100 years, harder to tell but again probably not, in that case just rip the plaster off now. Give the family enough of a pay off to last a few generations and find a system based on merit. I know they argue that the Royal family bring in tourists but I have never gone to Spain, Denmark, Norway, etc because they have a royal family. I guess I might visit a castle, but just because we stop having a monarchy it doesn't mean we have to pull down all the castles or stop having army parades.

Elsie296 · 06/10/2021 05:21

I wouldn't like to see the monarchy abolished, I think that people attribute more power to them then they actually have, and then see that as the problem.
I see them as an centuries old institution that has evolved into a beloved British tradition that I would love to see continued.
Plenty of badly behaved families to take their place if they were gone and, even if not 'official' the family would still be prominent and provide prime headline material and I doubt we would notice much difference tbh.
However, I do think we will see generational changes, I think that once millennials/gen z become the older members of society, the royal family will be less thought off. They haven't had quite the same upbringing in terms of respecting the queen, and have only ever viewed the royal family in terms of scandal- starting right from Diana in the 80's.

Lightswitch123 · 06/10/2021 05:24

I hope it ends with the queen.

londonrach · 06/10/2021 05:53

There's been alot less interest in them since covid, Andrew and harry situation. Saying that it be impossible to get rid of them as there's still enough support..weather that goes when the queen dies...don't know.. Charles is not popular but Kate and William are.

MimiDaisy11 · 06/10/2021 05:57

I’m a Republican. Sure democracy is flawed ( “democracy is the worst form of government – except for all the others that have been tried“) and people can choose idiots - though that’s often when it’s just a choice of two and there’s a lack of choice due to the particular system in place. I don’t like the US system and think a system like Ireland with division between head of state and government works best. You still have a figure to unite the country like you supposedly do with a monarchy.

Obviously people are free to disagree I just wish more people would read up on the monarchy, to look into how the duchy of Cornwall works for example. Sure Prince Andrew’s scandals make it into the press but there’s not much on more core aspects.
The blurred lines between public and private funds is often worked to royalist advantages.

Queen Elizabeth realises the importance/power of silence, Prince Charles doesn’t. On issues such as brexit I bet both remainers and leavers think she supports their position. When Charles is around when divisive issues come around he won’t be able to keep his mouth shut. That will put cracks in the monarchy but lots of people like William and he seems better at staying silent. So I don’t think the monarchy will go in my life time in the UK but I do think so for other countries like Australia and New Zealand.

LoveGrooveDanceParty · 06/10/2021 05:58

YABU - it is absolutely, categorically not going to end with Charles.

People have talked like this since the dawn of the Monarchy, and yet here we still are.

If the commonwealth countries - who talk about leaving often enough, but never actually do - still have the Queen as the head of state, you can bet your last $£€ that the Monarchy has a long, looooong shelf life yet, and is no going anywhere.

Doingtheboxerbeat · 06/10/2021 06:15

I'll settle for getting rid of the Tories - and that seems impossible, so no, I don't think it will happen in my lifetime.

SarahBellam · 06/10/2021 06:26

I wish they would. They're pointless and expensive, but they're bread and circuses for the great unwashed who enjoy tugging their forelock to someone because they're wearing a dress that cost the same as an average salary.

echt · 06/10/2021 06:38

I am a thoroughgoing republican.

The monarchy is far more durable than any reprehensible behaviour by some of its members. It will not end with the death of the Queen.
