To think the monarchy will end at Charles?

I've just noticed a lot of republican talk recently (prompted by the other thread on the earth shot prize, also generally twitter and recent republican stuff happening in Wales) and I wonder whether it's because I'm in an echo chamber? Or is MN also an echo chamber? Either way. Are you a royalist or a republican?

Personally I feel the royal family is worth the money spent but should be kept out of politics. Kind of like other european monarchies.

But then on the other hand by dissolving the aristocracy wouldn't we be solving the problems of inequity in society?

I am not in UK and that precludes me from having a say in all this by vote or whatever.

However, to me the RF are symptomatic of the class system that is endemic in the UK, and the RF are top of the heap, therefore anyone associated with them has jumped the shark and is "in" LOL.

I wonder why Charles is so unpopular, anyone care to enlighten me? I understand that there is residual anger at his behaviour towards his first wife, but things have moved on now I think. He is just a boring old fart afais, and maybe he will set up a hemp growing enterprise in Highgrove and see out his reign in a pain free CBD oil existence whilst not forgetting to talk to the hemp plants while he is at it.

Andante57 · 06/10/2021 18:19

Very little that is in any serious fashion genuinely left wing

Catkitty go onto a thread about Boris’s speech in the politics topic. Posters are saying anyone who supports Boris shouldn’t have a vote.

Grin

But they are very empathetic, caring and above all inclusive, of course

GrimDamnFanjo · 06/10/2021 18:23

@GiantHaystacks2021

No, they'll never go. Not quietly anyway. The establishment and their voters prop up the monarchy and honestly there would need to be a full scale revolution, on the scale of the French one, to make it happen.
Agreed, how would this happen?

Which political party would dare to run a referendum?

WhileMyMeringueGentlyWeeps · 06/10/2021 18:25

I think the royal family will become much less important and highly thought of after the queen dies and then it will decline further after Charles and then the younger royals will change it dramatically.
Hopefully it will become more like other European countries that have royal families.

Libertaire · 06/10/2021 18:45

I’m a Republican & would definitely vote to abolish the monarchy after the Queen dies. As for what would replace it, my preference would be for an elected figurehead President with a mainly ceremonial role, based on the Irish / German model.

I would also abolish the House of Lords and replace it with a mainly elected upper chamber. There could be a group of eminent expert scientists, economists, medics, engineers etc also entitled to sit in this house. We could start the nominations with Prof Dame Sarah Gilbert.

I’m not optimistic that any of this will happen, but I do think Canada, Australia, New Zealand and possibly others, will become republics when the Queen dies.

Andante57 · 06/10/2021 18:52

Gianthaystacks
do you think a revolution would be a price worth paying for abolishing the monarchy?

Lol influenced not only by Twitter but also by The Guardian. I see...

Mustlovegin: I thought you would say this - No, I don't get my news from twitter. I see it as a way of gauging general sentiment of people and how they think. Hence wondering about the echo chamber. The guardian is a reputable source of information, but if it is too left wing for you the story (if you click and actually read the content) appeared in several news outlets if you would like to research this for yourself.

As a clinical psychologist I'm more interested in why you appear to be so angry in all your replies. Is it just this topic, or are you passionate about maintaining traditional values in general?

StoneofDestiny · 06/10/2021 18:53

Better if it ended right now

TertiusLydgate · 06/10/2021 18:55

I’m 100% republican and would love to see them abolished. I’d hope to it see it end when the queen dies.

The ridiculous forelock tugging when Phillip died made me nauseous. And as for those who bob and curtsy to them…? Ludicrous.

ChurchofLatterDayPaints · 06/10/2021 19:04

@Comedycook

William and Kate will be hugely popular. They seem to be doing an excellent job raising their kids, so I predict they will all be popular too.
Comedycook Seriously, how many 5 year olds do you know who get indoctrinated into grouse shooting?

19th century values that belong in the 19th century.

mustlovegin · 06/10/2021 20:04

I'm not angry but I tend to be rather spirited

You, on the contrary give the impression of having been drinking valerian tea all day Smile

CathyorClaire · 06/10/2021 20:10

You may not like the truth or you may not understand what I wrote. But it's certainly not waffle

Of course I understood what you wrote Hmm but vague, unevidenced claims that they make the country far more than we spend on them (it doesn't stop at the Sovereign Grant) don't make for a convincing argument let alone the truth.

mustlovegin · 06/10/2021 20:13

OP, I hope you find your answers.

But...YABU for saying The Guardian is a reputable source of information. It's biased, distorting and hyperbolic.

Also you should consider reading a bit of history and learn about statistics and sampling. Even professionals in this area get it wrong most of the time, but you definitely cannot use Twitter to gauge sentiment

Soozikinzi · 06/10/2021 20:13

Yes definitely really I think the Queen should be the last . The Queen is brilliant but there are too many hangers on how can anyone be a lord or lady or whatever in 2021 ? It's ridiculous.

mustlovegin · 06/10/2021 20:14

are you passionate about maintaining traditional values in general

No, but it's frustrating when people are gullible and parrot inanities. There's a lot of that at the moment IMO

ChurchofLatterDayPaints · 06/10/2021 20:15

Waffle, drivel, garbage, batshit, horseshit, cowpat...

Just one tiny little link, book or article to justify all the monarchist rage and delusion? Pretty please nicely.

mustlovegin · 06/10/2021 20:24

I just don’t think it has a place in the modern world

What do you understand by 'the modern world'?

You are deluded if you believe monarchies have not been replaced by even more influential and autocratic (global) structures. Think of Twitter, Facebook, Amazon and the like. Think about how much power those who control these platforms actually have, and it will only get worse.

The Royal Family, their pomp and their modest expenditure should be the least of our worries really.

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 06/10/2021 20:25

I love the royal family, but in the way that they are characters in a reality TV show !
When I think about their position, it seems ridiculous, who decided they were better than everyone else ? It's quite bizarre really , they are just people , human beings , but almost universally worshipped .
If the whole world stopped " believing " in them, what would happen ?

StripeyBadger · 06/10/2021 20:28

It’s not a quick process to get rid of the royal family and so it would be very tricky to time it for when Charles’ dies. I think the reality is that it will carry on for some time yet.

ChurchofLatterDayPaints · 06/10/2021 20:28

"The Royal Family, their pomp and their modest expenditure should be the least of our worries really"

Yes I agree, their fascism, racism, landgrabbing and intimate knowledge of global paedophile rings and arms trafficking should probably be top of the list.

CathyorClaire · 06/10/2021 20:48

The Royal Family, their pomp and their modest expenditure should be the least of our worries really

Should we worry about cash for access, gongs for sale, multiple tax dodges, endemic successful lobbying in their own interests and princes playing hide and seek with the law instead?

UsedUpUsername · 06/10/2021 20:50

Isn’t she one of the world’s largest landowners? If not the largest?

Fairies would die Wink

MynameisWa · 06/10/2021 20:51

Twitter = left wing bias. Guardian = left wing bias. Mumsnet = liberal left wing bias. Republicans = left wing bias.

There is still a lot if support for the monarchy. If you don’t think there is then you are in a left wing bubble.

People love them because they are ingrained in British culture. What replaces it if it’s gone? Boris as the head of state like Biden and Macron? Oh yes that’s preferable. Can’t wait for that. Yes I get it that they are democratically elected, but that still doesn’t mean we end up with states people we are proud of.

Also, it’s a myth the royal family cost tonnes of money because The Crown Estate makes more than enough money to pay for the sovereign. Because of that the royals are a self funding entity as can be sen in the attachment.

Sometimes reigning generations are good. Sometimes they are bad. The point is the royal family is permanent and a constant in an ever changing world. This gives comfort and stability to many who need it.

I hope they are here to stay. William and Kate will be brilliant for the country. Stoic, elegant, selfless Kate. Our Queen!

Long live the Queen!
