To think the monarchy will end at Charles?

I've just noticed a lot of republican talk recently (prompted by the other thread on the earth shot prize, also generally twitter and recent republican stuff happening in Wales) and I wonder whether it's because I'm in an echo chamber? Or is MN also an echo chamber? Either way. Are you a royalist or a republican?

Personally I feel the royal family is worth the money spent but should be kept out of politics. Kind of like other european monarchies.

But then on the other hand by dissolving the aristocracy wouldn't we be solving the problems of inequity in society?

@Atmywitsend29

If anything, once William and Kate get on throne their popularity will be at an all time high

There are scores of people who massively disagree with that. They might be the press darlings but many general public are not quite so easily persuaded.

Plus they will be somewhere in their 70s probably

William and Kate will be hugely popular. They seem to be doing an excellent job raising their kids, so I predict they will all be popular too.

SirChenjins · 06/10/2021 16:26

I think it will continue with Kate and Wills, but i suspect they will significantly pare things down and hopefully they'll strip out the rotten and dead wood.

freudien · 06/10/2021 16:30

@IpanemaPeaHen

I think William and Catherine as a team are very popular. She saves him from coming across as too remote.
Rose hanbury might have finished him off. I mean figuratively of course.

Yet again Mumsnet is misreading the minds of Joe Public.
The Monarchy is safe.
This is the age of Celeb and people fight to get to be involved with Our Royal Family, look at her and him in the USA.
Do you think the fact we have all the pomp of a coronation in the next few years and William and Catherine and their children stepping into the limelight will be passed over.
Did Brexit not teach people that the liberals are out of touch, and that is why they will always misread the UK.

SirChenjins · 06/10/2021 16:32

Brexit taught us that lots of people are very stupid and believe everything they read on red buses.

IcedPurple · 06/10/2021 16:36

I'm not sure any individual heir to the throne even HAS the power to dissolve the monarchy without the consent of parliament?

Would even that be enough? Wouldn't the Commonwealth countries also have a say? They did when the rules were changed to allow girls to outrank their younger brothers was passed a few years ago.

I think abolishing the monarchy would be a massive headache, since the monarchy is entwined in so many aspects of British life. That alone, barring unforeseen circumstances, might be enough for it to continue.

If Charles comes even close to being as long lived as his Grandmother and parents Wills will be sixty or more before he takes the throne. It's hard to picture him seeming modern and relevant if that's the case and that's before factoring in the resting pissed-off face

What popular role do you see for George's spares?

Kates hugely popular...I think being married to her massively helps with Williams popularity. Who knows what roles Charlotte and Louis will have? They have names...no need to refer to them as 'spares'. They are people in their own right.

freudien · 06/10/2021 16:53

@Andante57

Freudian are you going to answer my question about your plan to ‘disssolve’ the aristocracy?
When we saw some dissolving of aristocratic power under Blair (paring down HoL for example) not even one guillotine or firing squad was employed in the end.

She can (and does) put pressure on PMs

How do you know? Have you been to the private weekly meetings or read it on Twitter?

Sauce for the kids goose and all that.

The fact is the two most modern understudies to the main royal role seem to have been left purposeless, resentful and obsessed with the lifestyle they think they're owed.

If the monarchy is to remain as popular as some seem to think it is now might be a good time for them to start thinking about the issue.

Andante57 · 06/10/2021 17:05

Freudien so what you mean is removing the remaining hereditary peers from the House of Lords?

freudien · 06/10/2021 17:07

@AppleBlueberryPie

What happens to the RF funding if the monarch ends? Presumably that would also be the end of taxpayer funded "working royals" so how would they afford to keep their homes and security. Would K&W have to find civilian jobs or would there be some kind of arrangement so all of them continue earning enough via property, investment funds etc?
Meghan and Harry are charging a $300,000 speakers fee for an evenings work- with the level of their network I'm sure they're not going to find themselves in Westminster jobcentre any time soon

YABU. I'm still hoping it will end at Liz.

@Andante57

I definitely think this should happen - birthright shouldn't play a part in our lawmaking - but as a follow on from this what do you then do about royal consent? If it's ceremonial there's no harm in it but my unease is with royal presence in the political decision making
OP posts:
SusieBob · 06/10/2021 17:17

Nah, we're stuck with the lot of them for all time.

Of course, the concept of a head of state being there because of birthright is fucking ridiculous, but for some completely inexplicable reason they remain popular.

TrufflyPig · 06/10/2021 17:26

I'd love it to end when the Queen dies but sadly it won't.

The Royal PR machine seems to be investing everything they have in William and Kate though, they are painfully aware of Charles' lack of popularity.

ScholesPanda · 06/10/2021 17:32

I hope not. I have no interest in replacing the Monarch with a President, I'm happy with things as they are.

mustlovegin · 06/10/2021 17:54

Is this a particularly republican minded forum

Lots of lefties, anti-establishment anti-authority types it seems

mustlovegin · 06/10/2021 17:57

predictably refuted by vague flannel and waffle

You may not like the truth or you may not understand what I wrote. But it's certainly not waffle

That’s funny. I see Mumsnet as generally pretty stolid. Some identifiable pockets of right wing reactionaries. Some pockets of socially liberal shading into left of centre/soft left. Some pockets of feminism. Very little that is in any serious fashion genuinely left wing.
CoughingInAisle15 · 06/10/2021 18:09

Definitely a Republican. It’s nothing personal, I just don’t think it has a place in the modern world. My preference is for it to end with the Queen.

OhWhyNot · 06/10/2021 18:11

Wait until there is an election

Labour were going to win by a landslide in every election for the last 15 years (though under Corbyn support wore off because of him but those that did support him were/are the most passionate of all political supporters)

Boris Johnson has been about to resign many many times if you believed MN

MN is most definitely left wing
