Washer dryer argument with DH

Magnoliamarigold · 05/10/2021 09:57

Me: We need a washer dryer, it saves space
DH: There is no such thing as a proper washer dryer, they all dry shit. We need a separate washing machine and a separate dryer. Everyone I know agrees with me.

Agree with your husband

IamnotSethRogan · 05/10/2021 10:28

I have a washer dryer and it's perfect. It's a Hoover and is excellent, properly drys things. Like a previous poster has said, if it's a heavy wash take some bits out. My mum has a tumble dryer and doesn't out a full laundry load in either.

I had an Electrolux one before that was utter shit which would have out me off them, if it wasn't for the fact we definitely couldn't fit a dryer in. I'm glad I have them another chance as this one is ace.

KirstenBlest · 05/10/2021 10:29

I've had washer dryers and they were crap at drying

SylvanasWindrunner · 05/10/2021 10:31

If you want the space you can stack washing machine and tumble drier, if you have the height.

BruceAndNosh · 05/10/2021 10:31

I would never sacrifice a separate dryer for a mere cupboard.
Unless you are planning on using the cupboard for storing the half load of wet laundry that won't fir in the combo washer./dryer

thislifetoo · 05/10/2021 10:32

DH is right

Bellringer · 05/10/2021 10:32

Even which agree with him. You don't need a dryer anyway

Pretendingtosmile · 05/10/2021 10:32

Ours is awful (indesit) we now have a heated airer which is great. I never use the dryer function on our machine now because it doesn't dry a damn thing

DumplingsAndStew · 05/10/2021 10:33

My dad was a domestic appliance engineer for over 40 years. He would never own a washer/dryer.

They are much more likely to develop a fault. Often, if one part has a fault, the whole machine is out of commission. The dryer facility is not as efficient as separate appliances. You are literally halving the laundry capacity at any time.

You have separates at the moment, so clearly have the space. Stick with separates.

Magnoliamarigold · 05/10/2021 10:33

@SirChenjins

Which one do you have?

Love that - 'DH, I am NOT wrong, YOU are wrong' Grin

@Whycangirlsbesonasty

John Lewis own brand. Paid £800-ish 10 years ago. I pay no attention to how heavy the washing is, just fill the drum 3/4s full set it off and 5 hours later out pops clean and dry washing.
5 hours for one small-ish load of washing???

What a colossal waste of electricity.

I wash most of our stuff on the 1 hour wash and then hang it outside or hang it in the large airing cupboard, if it’s raining.
I rarely use the separate dryer but it’s there if needed.

LittleMysSister · 05/10/2021 10:33

We have gone from separate to combined.

Tbh I do agree with your DH, if you have the space (we don't really which is why we switched) I'd stick to separate.

A full load of washing took max an hour to dry in our dryer, whereas to get anything dry in the washer-dryer is 3+ hours. I do put it on through the night to save money but the reality is we end up barely using it because I'm worried how much 3+ hours of drying will cost us.

MarthaJonesPhone · 05/10/2021 10:33

I disagree. I've had both. I've got an AEG washer dryer, it washes and dries perfectly well.

nomoneytreehere · 05/10/2021 10:34

Your husband is right. Washer dryers are for people that never use the tumble dryer and want a lesser washing machine.

Phalarope · 05/10/2021 10:34

We had one in a cupboard in a tiny flat. Not only was it shit, it also got so hot that all the buttons on the duvet cover melted. And yet the duvet cover remained damp.

LittleMysSister · 05/10/2021 10:34

PS. This doesn't even include washing time. Including washing time the whole thing can be over 6 hours.
knittingaddict · 05/10/2021 10:35

They are terrible things - take ages to dry clothes and always going wrong.

We had one when we first moved to the current house and it was breaking down all the time. I stopped using the drying bit and it still broke down constantly. It's the only kitchen appliance that justified it's own insurance cover.

When we had enough we bought a standard washing machine and use a heated airer if we need to dry inside. It works a treat.

MrsMariaReynolds · 05/10/2021 10:35

Yeah, sorry Op, but your H is right. Combi washer/dryers are shite, I'm afraid. They may save space, but they waste energy by NOT getting things dry.

DameMaureen · 05/10/2021 10:36

We have a Bosch one and even the engineer says it is crap . We now only use it as a washing machine and got a Hotpoint tumble dryer in the garage which is really good.

Paintyourpaletteblueandgrey · 05/10/2021 10:36

Love my washer dryer. It's an AEG one and is fantastic!

swiftt · 05/10/2021 10:37

@Magnoliamarigold I have the LG washer dryer you linked to, and it’s fab. I was worried it wouldn’t dry great but it does as long as it isn’t overloaded. The only annoyance is when you have multiple loads to do, you have to wait for the one machine so you can’t have some drying and the next load washing.

ErrmWTAF · 05/10/2021 10:37

Don't LTB. Grin

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 05/10/2021 10:38

I have a really good washer dryer! No problems with it at all. It’s all I have room for. It’s a Bosch one - from John Lewis so it had a guarantee.

The wash dry cycle doesn’t get things completely dry, so you have to put in a gentle drying cycle afterwards but it works perfectly well in both functions.

sugarapplelane · 05/10/2021 10:38

Your DH is right here
Washer dryers are rubbish and not worth the money
Buy a separate dryer and put in the garage if you don't have space in your kitchen

I think it's very nearly unanimous OP which is rare for MN!
