Washer dryer argument with DH

Magnoliamarigold · 05/10/2021 09:57

Me: We need a washer dryer, it saves space
DH: There is no such thing as a proper washer dryer, they all dry shit. We need a separate washing machine and a separate dryer. Everyone I know agrees with me.

I'm with your DH on this one.

A flat i had came with a washer dryer, the dryer was absolutely shit. I think i used it twice.

We're in a house now so have separates and it's great! The toddler generates a mountain of washing (how??? His clothes are tiny!) So having both running at once is great.

DoubleTweenQueen · 05/10/2021 10:18

We had an LG washer/dryer - lasted at least 12 years, with DH replacing/fixinf a few things now and again (eSpares are fab). Have just replaced it with the same, but updated model.
Works well for us - only really use the dryer for towels, although might try the gentler settings on clothing over the winter.
Decently made and compact

If you get a separate dryer, get a condensing one.

Neither of you are wrong, really. Depends on what you want - just get a decent warranty, whatever you go for.

CrackersDontMatter · 05/10/2021 10:19

I'm with your DH, sorry.

EatYourVegetables · 05/10/2021 10:19

Another vote for DH is completely right.

Practicebeingpatient · 05/10/2021 10:19

I totally agree with your DH. I'd rather go without a dryer than thave a washer dryer.

We recently bought a small holiday flat with no outside drying space. However it did have a very expensive, brand new washer dryer. I thought maybe they'd improved since I last used one but no, it was a total PITA. Clothes were either soaking wet or overly dry with creases baked in . Within 6 months I replaced it with a washing machine in the kitchen and a tumble dryer in the bedroom. Not ideal but better than before.

Peanutsandchilli · 05/10/2021 10:19

He's right. We had one once and it was absolutely crap. You can't load the machine to capacity because you have to remove half of it to dry, and even then it doesn't.

HoppingPavlova · 05/10/2021 10:19

Team DH. We had a mid-range one. Spectacularly shit. Was a 10kg washer that supposedly dried 4kg. Nope. Tried 2kg. Nope. It even found a pair of undies trying. Everything was just hot and damp no matter what you did. We thought it must have been the machine so got another one, top range as we really wanted it to work. Nope. Same issue. Never ever again.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 05/10/2021 10:19

I wouldn’t buy a washer/dryer unless I absolutely did not have space for both.

MrsTulipTattsyrup · 05/10/2021 10:21

I have one and I love it. It’s eight years old and has never broken down.

You just have to use it correctly. It will wash twice the weight of clothes as it can dry, so plan to use a wash cycle, then empty it and put half to dry on at a time. Not difficult.

Works wonderfully well, and fits in our little utility room.

fuckitbucket16 · 05/10/2021 10:21

With your DH sorry. They’re utter rubbish.

Franklin12 · 05/10/2021 10:21

I had one. As others say, NEVER again. Just rubbish. You will 100% regret is especially as its not a space issue. You would like a little more space but honestly, dont do it!

Allywill · 05/10/2021 10:21

We had one years ago, it was rubbish so unless they have massively improved since then (and from responses it would appear not) I would not bother.

Hoppinggreen · 05/10/2021 10:23

Mine is really good.
It’s a Hoover and I’m really happy with how it dries

bigbluebus · 05/10/2021 10:23

Even my DH who never does the washing knows that washer driers are crap.
Their drying capacity is less than their washing capacity so you either have to put a smaller load on or take some stuff out.
Also when I transfer clothes from my washer to a separate tumble dryer, I untangle them and shake them out as I move them across. I wouldn't want to be drying a creased and tangled up load of washing.
You can get far more washing done if you have separate machines. Clogging up the washing machine for 5 hours is going to be frustrating if you have a lot of washing to do.
They are notoriously slow at drying. My tumble dryer (vented) can dry towels in 45 mins.

Sorry to say this but your DH us absolutely right on this occasion.

bridgeofslides · 05/10/2021 10:23

Dh is right combined machines are shit.

We had one in the wanky flat exh and I had when dd1 was little.

lunar1 · 05/10/2021 10:23

Mine was a Miele at £1500, I hate it beyond words. I still use a separate AEG dryer that I got from MN as a product test and absolutely love.

I can't wait for the day the washer dryer gives up the ghost!

MissCreeAnt · 05/10/2021 10:23

What would you do with the extra space? If it would mean getting a DW, for example, that might be worth it. I'm struggling to think of anything else that's a better use of 60cm than tumble dryer.

AryaStarkWolf · 05/10/2021 10:24

Sorry, I also agree with your DH, washer driers are shite

mamaoffourdc · 05/10/2021 10:25

Sorry your husband is right!

mommybear1 · 05/10/2021 10:25

DH is right.

elbea · 05/10/2021 10:26

We have a washer dryer, it’s absolutely fine. It’s a pain not being able to wash and dry at the same time though. We get through lots of clothes with a toddler.

Ditto.

And don't get LG either; they're good at TVs but their kitchenware isn't up to it IMO.

Our tumble dryer is a Neff; it's pretty old now (easily 10 years if not more) and it's still excellent. It dries two giant bath towels in about 35 minutes flat. I'd highly recommend their dryers.

GrolliffetheDragon · 05/10/2021 10:26

I don't have a dryer - no space, probably can't afford to run it. I have used a washer dryer though and it was awful. People were complaining on another thread about the length of eco wash settings? The washer dryer took 5-6 hours and the damn clothes still needed to be hung up to finish drying.

Buy a dehumidifier and a laundry tent to go over your clothes horse. Cheaper to run than a dryer and it will reduce any condensation in your house.

Badabingbadabum · 05/10/2021 10:27

Yeah, if you have space get both. You can also wash and dry at the same time which is great on rainy winter days.
