To not want to camp this month

Going away for a couple of nights later this month, basically my partner wants to camp, I don’t. I’ve said I’m willing to pay the difference for a hotel but he sees it as a waste of money. Not even a fancy hotel, just somewhere to put our heads.
I’m just worried it will be freezing and damp, and since we don’t drive it’s a lot of equipment to lug on the train for 6h.
We can’t seem to come to an agreement, what would you do? Has anybody camped late October and found it ok?

I have camped all year round and been fine, but you do need the right kit and if you're on the train it's going to be a pain in the neck. Sorry OP.

ThinWomansBrain · 05/10/2021 08:11

sounds ghastly - & you can get a travelodge for £30 a night Hmm
I'd rather stay home than that.
Stay home - or you get a hotel, he camps & meet up in the day (when you're refreshed from a good nights sleep in a warm comfy bed, freshly showered....)

Benjaminbutton12 · 05/10/2021 08:11

We have a tent and sleeping bags atm, so we still need to buy a lot of equipment. Which will end up as more expensive than a hotel I imagine, even if we can use it again. Maybe I am being too negative though

I'd rather stay home than go camping with a stingy man!

Beamur · 05/10/2021 08:12

That sounds pretty grim actually! You might be lucky and get a few dry days but otherwise it might be pretty cold.
My DD is pretty hardy and is going camping this weekend and she's quite fond of winter camping with Guides.
You need a good sleeping bag and maybe a liner too.

Benjaminbutton12 · 05/10/2021 08:12

Travelodge has gone up to £65 a night for our dates Shock

& even heavier to lug the kit home when it's wet and soggy. It's your break as much as his, don't be bullied in to it.

BoxOfDreams · 05/10/2021 08:14

Well tell him going away for a weekend is a waste of money if he's going to be like that about it. Get yourself a B&B and let him sleep in a field if he wants to.

RedRec · 05/10/2021 08:15

Sounds grim, OP. Let the cheapskate go on his own and you have a lovely, relaxing time at home.

ModerateOven · 05/10/2021 08:15

Not a cat in hell's chance. I'd rather stay at home.

FreddyMercurysCat · 05/10/2021 08:16

I love camping but no way would I be camping in the UK at the end of October - urgh so damp.

And then brining damp grassy kit back on the train. No thanks

What about glamping as a compromise

Fluffandbubbles · 05/10/2021 08:16

What about one of those little camping hut/lodges ? This sort of thing www.billingaquadrome.com/holidays/glamping-pods/

They are basic but would at least be dry and warm ?

Benjaminbutton12 · 05/10/2021 08:16

All the hotels round there are pretty extortionate, it’s 3 changes on the train to get there too. It’s just making me not look forward to the trip

Mrsjayy · 05/10/2021 08:16

Honestly how is it going to be fun it sounds dreadful

Benjaminbutton12 · 05/10/2021 08:17

Yes I will have a look at glamping, sounds great

No chance! We went camping towards the end of summer when temps had dropped a bit. Dc we're freezing and we had to her three extra blankets from the car

HungryHippo11 · 05/10/2021 08:18

I like camping but now way would I camp in a tent in October

whatswithtodaytoday · 05/10/2021 08:18

If you can't afford a hotel you surely can't afford the equipment either?

It would not need my idea of fun, but thankfully my partner is on the same page and wouldn't dream of suggesting it. I'd happily pay £65 to be warm and dry.

EileenGC · 05/10/2021 08:19

The trip sounds fun if you have the right equipment and I'd personally really enjoy it.

But everyone enjoys different things and especially if you're tired with work, a decent bed is probably going to be much more... enjoyable, than camping in the wet without knowing how to do so properly.

Gladioli23 · 05/10/2021 08:20

I've camped in October.

At the beginning of October it was lovely - late summer type weather, warm enough - almost too warm. As nice as camping gets (still not as nice as a real bed...).

Late October: it was awful. Frost on the ground. So cold you had your boots as close into the embers of the fire as you could get without them melting. I have a 3 season sleeping bag but it just wasn't warm enough. Sleeping in clothes because it was too cold to change out of them. Hat and socks in "bed".

That plus taking all the stuff on a train would be the total antithesis of a holiday in my view.

KingsleyShacklebolt · 05/10/2021 08:21

Well I wouldn't camp ANY month so you are not being unreasonable.

Your partner sounds like a tight arse.

merrymouse · 05/10/2021 08:22

Where are you going? If you don’t have a car are you planning to do lots of walking? Have you chosen a campsite and what are facilities like?

Fallsballs · 05/10/2021 08:22

Camping in October and you’ve no equipment apart from the basics ?
6hr train journey ?
Can’t afford a £65 hotel ?
It all sounds a bit nuts and quite unbelievable.

Lolapusht · 05/10/2021 08:23

Campervan?

We go camping a lot and love it and there’s no way I’d be doing it at this time of year and we have all the gear you’d need.

I’d also not go camping for 2 nights as it’s a bit of a faff. Summer…fine as you’ll need less gear and can sit out enjoying the weather. Autumn…you’ll need more stuff to keep warm/dry. I’d also not go on the train.

You don’t sound keen on going so why does that not matter?

KingsleyShacklebolt · 05/10/2021 08:24

And if you don't drive, you won't even have the option of sitting in the dry car when (not if) it rains. Utterly miserable.
