To not want to camp this month

Going away for a couple of nights later this month, basically my partner wants to camp, I don’t. I’ve said I’m willing to pay the difference for a hotel but he sees it as a waste of money. Not even a fancy hotel, just somewhere to put our heads.
I’m just worried it will be freezing and damp, and since we don’t drive it’s a lot of equipment to lug on the train for 6h.
We can’t seem to come to an agreement, what would you do? Has anybody camped late October and found it ok?

Camping can be fun when the sun is shining. It is not at all fun if it is damp cold and raining

There's a campsite where my parents live in the Lakes that's open all year round. Some people are very hardy and are there in the winter in a tent but it just wouldn't be my cup of tea at all.

Why are you going so far afield? Can't you go somewhere closer to home?

Furrydog7 · 05/10/2021 14:12

I wouldn't go camping in October. Even if the weather was nice it will be cold on a night. I wouldn't want to lug all the camping equipment on the train either. I have just come back from holiday and it was bad enough travelling on the train with a suitcase.

I can only reach two possible conclusions, one is that he has gone mad or two, that in actual fact he doesn't like you and wants to torture you into splitting up with him...

Gizmo98765 · 05/10/2021 14:40

😂 @Flummoxed23 agree

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 05/10/2021 14:45

I have camped in April which is probably quite similar.

But the point is that you don’t want to! Your partner can’t be the sole judge of what’s a waste of money. If you want a warm dry hotel room - and why wouldn’t you?- you should be able to get one.

ShrikeAttack · 05/10/2021 14:47

Camping in late-October is for the well-season hard-core only!

TuftyMarmoset · 05/10/2021 15:42

Depends where and what you’re doing. If you have the right kit it’s not a problem. I went camping in the lakes a couple of weeks ago and it was lovely but obviously got a bit colder since then. Camping on public transport is also not an issue if you pack fairly light and make good use of straps and bungee cords to attach stuff to backpacks. What I find weird is his insistence that you camp despite not actually having the equipment - does he have an aversion to hotels?

ChargingBuck · 05/10/2021 15:48

@Benjaminbutton12

We have a tent and sleeping bags atm, so we still need to buy a lot of equipment. Which will end up as more expensive than a hotel I imagine, even if we can use it again. Maybe I am being too negative though
Or maybe you are allowed to have a preference, express it, & not get talked out of it by a stingy man who just wants to get his own way.

Does he often find things that you like doing to be "a waste of money"?
Does he usually expect to hold the upper hand in 'couple decisions'?

welshladywhois40 · 05/10/2021 16:09

I enjoy camping but no way in late October. We camped late august last year and I still needed two sleeping bags at night.

Part of the fun of camping is sitting outside in the evening. In late October I wouldn't be doing this.

I quite like camping but get cold even in summer tbh.
