To not want to camp this month

Benjaminbutton12 · 05/10/2021 08:08

Going away for a couple of nights later this month, basically my partner wants to camp, I don’t. I’ve said I’m willing to pay the difference for a hotel but he sees it as a waste of money. Not even a fancy hotel, just somewhere to put our heads.
I’m just worried it will be freezing and damp, and since we don’t drive it’s a lot of equipment to lug on the train for 6h.
We can’t seem to come to an agreement, what would you do? Has anybody camped late October and found it ok?

I wouldn't want to camp at all never mind in October 😃

Iggly · 05/10/2021 08:26

Are you travelling all that way for a particular reason?

Going all that way with camping kit sounds grim. Especially if it rains and then dragging back wet kit.

If he wants to try camping then do so when the weather is better. Camping is fun but not when it’s cold - it’ll be so cold you’ll need shed loads of layers for night which will be tough to carry! When you get cold camping, it’s hard to warm up.

rookiemere · 05/10/2021 08:29

Sounds ghastly- I wouldn't do it. Is there a particular reason you want to go to this location on these dates ?

BigSandyBalls2015 · 05/10/2021 08:31

I love camping but I wouldn’t go this late in the year and def not without a car!! Madness. That’s no holiday.

thefirstmrsrochester · 05/10/2021 08:32

I’d not camp any month of the year, however I have stayed in camping pods during autumn and they were lovely.

Yummypumpkin · 05/10/2021 08:33

I'm a very keen camper.

The cold won't be an issue really, nor the damp so much as the dark. Youre going to be sat around in the dark, pitching up in the dark...if the campsite allows fires this is one thing. Otherwise its just quite dull.

But the point is...you don't want to go. Don't go. This is an unusual demand he is making...refusing to go in July when you had a car and all the fear might be one thing but its very different to that and frankly your man hasn't really thought this through and isn't the adventuring genius he thinks he is!!!

Yummypumpkin · 05/10/2021 08:34

Gear not fear!

BoxOfDreams · 05/10/2021 08:34

Glamping will cost you more than a decent hotel!

sar302 · 05/10/2021 08:36

Surely you just say "no thanks, that doesn't sound like something I'm going to enjoy at this time of year."

There is no moral obligation to enjoy camping - especially in winter.

EdgeOfTheSky · 05/10/2021 08:36

I would be up for camping in October, yes, in my lovely warm (as tents go) canvas tent, sitting by my fire pit, sleeping on my thick SIM to insulate from the cold ground, in my bulky 3 season sleeping bag…and then carting the damp tent / muddy groundsheet home in the car to dry out.

Would I buy new stuff, lug it in a train to spend a night or two in the compromised comfort of minimal kit that can be carried? No, I would not.

Not til May, if it is a warm month.

MrsWooster · 05/10/2021 08:36

No way. You’re looking at 300£ to get sufficient kit to camp comfortably in October plus £10000 for a large car to carry it all in.

EnjoyingTheSilence · 05/10/2021 08:40

I absolutely love camping. Have only been once this year due to many reasons and have really missed it.

With your circumstances, there isn’t a chance in hell I’d be camping! October, on a train with three changes. No way. It’ll be miserable and you’ll hate it. Why bother.

Mummyoflittledragon · 05/10/2021 08:41

This. £65 a night is not expensive.

Why would you offer to pay the extra? I am happy in my own company and would let him sod off for a weekend, stay at home, get a takeaway, treat food etc.

SturminsterNewton · 05/10/2021 08:42

I've just come back from a weekend of torrential rail, staying in a lovely cottage, and that was bad enough. No way would I do it in a tent.

Is it even within walking distance if a pub?

Unless you are mad keen hardy hikers or enjoy camping for its own sake most people’s idea of going away for a few days involves going out to eat, seeing the sights.

Campsites are not always close to what you want to do.

You will need good lighting and back up power (batteries, power bank etc) for the dark from 7pm onwards.

Iggly · 05/10/2021 08:46

@Benjaminbutton12

Travelodge has gone up to £65 a night for our dates Shock
£65 a night is a great price for a hotel
Foreverlexicon · 05/10/2021 08:49

Definitely not. We are relatively keen campers but 2 nights in the Lake District in early September and we bailed and got a hotel for the third night. I slept in a coat and I was still freezing.

AntiSocialDistancer · 05/10/2021 08:50

It feels weird that you're incapable of saying "That doesnt sound like my idea of a holiday" to your partner. And weirder again that your partner cant understand your point.

A tent and sleeping bags wont make a mid October holiday. Especially with no car, and no funds to top up on anything missing mid trip. And 3 train swaps?

I'd swap the holiday or failing that, the partner.

Justcallmebebes · 05/10/2021 08:50

"Camping in October and you’ve no equipment apart from the basics ?
6hr train journey ?
Can’t afford a £65 hotel ?
It all sounds a bit nuts and quite unbelievable."

^ This. The camping I may be able to cope with if the weather is mild but a 6 hour train journey lugging all the equipment? No chance

merrymouse · 05/10/2021 08:51

I’m assuming he has a particular campsite in mind?

Near me campsites with facilities for tents (toilets, showers) close around the end of September.

Obviously people do find ways of camping later in the year, but l’m assuming your lack of equipment means you don’t have much experience?

hangrylady · 05/10/2021 08:51

I love camping and go several times a year but in October there's no way you'd get me in a tent. Are there any cheap B&B's? Or even a caravan which will at least be warm and dry.

Adm1010 · 05/10/2021 08:52

No chance . And I like camping!!

FatBettyintheCoop · 05/10/2021 08:52

Camping late October in a tent??

Fuck that for a game of soldiers.

If you don’t fancy it, (and only a masochist would), just tell him you won’t be joining him. Organise your own fun that week-end instead.

MydogWillow · 05/10/2021 08:54

Hang on, no equipment means neither of you have camped properly before? That is stress number 1.

On a train? Are you walking from the train station or taking a cab (expensive)? What are you doing for food?

In October? Yes, in summer you can travel light. Plenty of people backpack. However, even though we get some lovely days in October, nights are cold and damp. You'll need extra gear.

If DP wants an adventure he can go alone or take a mate. I think he's being unrealistic.

That train journey sounds expensive too and bloody awkward lugging heavy camping gear.

Glamping is a great compromise.
