do families of notorious and vile pieces of filth receive protection, new identities etc or are they left to fend for themselves?

let’s be clear ( i worked with victims of crime for 20 years) in criminal cases the only person who gets fully funded support via a solicitor and barrister paid for by legal aid is the accused.
the families of the accused/convicted get no support. more shockingly in my opinion the victims family /victim do not get any legal aid to instruct their own advocates or lawyers and there is no statutory support for them. there are charities reliant on funding to help but having worked in one i can say they aren’t legally qualified so can’t advocate or support the victim in the same way the system pays for in respect of the accused/defendant/perpetrator. yes they can hand hold but imagine this: the defendant gets a tax payer funded team to do everything they can to get him off or mitigate, the victim/victims family do not. the system needs an overhaul for all.
It’s very sad that he’s ruined the life of his family but at least they have a chance to rebuild sarah and her family do not ( neither do Nicole and Biba’s family or Sabina’s family, the list goes on)

* just to be clear I believe everyone should have access to legal aid when accused of a crime, however the families and victims involved also deserve funded support and advocacy
KittenKong · 02/10/2021 15:51

I have worked with people who work with the families of victims (especially child victims) and was amazed to hear that this was a Charity (amazed that there needed to be a charity for such things).

IsleofRum · 02/10/2021 15:53

At first I thought this was a trendy wendy knocking Sir Winston Churchill.

KittenKong · 02/10/2021 15:55

I thought it was w(anker) c(ocks*er).

ilovesooty · 02/10/2021 15:56

I feel desperately sorry for his wife and children and hope they are supported and not harassed.

@IsleofRum

At first I thought this was a trendy wendy knocking Sir Winston Churchill.
"Trendy Wendy"?

Winston Churchill is not universally admired and never has been. Nothing necessarily trendy about it.

As for the actual topic, I've long found it shocking that the families get so little support for something which has turned their lives upsidedown, potentially put them at risk from vigilantes, yet was completely out of their control. Help absolutely should be available for them, whether that is help to relocate, to sort out finances, divorce etc.

RoseAndRose · 02/10/2021 16:23

I can see the point in not naming terrorists who want to be famous martyrs.

I don't think the same applies to other criminals

PicsInRed · 02/10/2021 16:32

It's almost certain the wife and children of a man like this would have suffered badly in the home as these men don't make good husbands and fathers. Media reports indicated that she's from abroad, so they may have a few options for a new start elsewhere if they want that.

I wish his poor family all the health, happiness and luck for their future and all the support and care here in the UK if that's what they choose. ❤

YourFinestPantaloons · 02/10/2021 16:37

I hope his wife and children get to live happy and peaceful lives and the Met police have an obligation to them I believe to help them do all they can to achieve that

playinginashadow · 02/10/2021 16:45

I have a (not super close) family member convinced of murder (horrible horrible horrible but nothing like this crime in terms of depravity, cruelty etc).

I was in the public gallery all through the trial and for sentencing. I wasn't being supportive. I was going to make sense of it all and to make sure that I saw with my own eyes that he was sent away for as long as was possible.

There was no support for any family as far as I'm aware. My family member wasn't married but his children certainly didn't receive a minute of support and nor did anyone else.

We were all ok though. It wasn't our relative that was dead.

Myfilterisbroken · 02/10/2021 17:07

Heartbreaking case and so very sad.

LukeEvansWife · 02/10/2021 17:07

Again, even if his wife did know he was pure fucking evil what could she have done about it? How is she responsible? Yeah, she could have left him if she knew, and all power to her if she had left him. But would he have still murdered Sarah or someone else? Probably. Because he is evil and the police force he worked for (and the police in general) are rotten from the inside out. His colleagues nicknamed him “the rapist” ffs.

I didn't say she was responsible FFS. Yes he still would have done what he did because he's an evil cunt.

Myfilterisbroken · 02/10/2021 17:13

Im absolutle gobsmacked that the press and released photos of her🤬

CaveMum · 02/10/2021 17:20

In response to my comment about “denying him publicity”, @MeredithGreyishblue makes the point better than I did. It’s about keeping the focus on the victim, and not the murderer.

It’s the same with OJ Simpson - no one ever seems to focus on Nicole or Ron and what happened to them. Or Meredith Kercher being lost in amongst the salacious gossip around the totally innocent Amanda Knox. How many people can name Peter Sutcliffe’s victims, but we all know who The Yorkshire Ripper is.

The victim(s) should always be front and centre but that’s sadly rarely the case.

MerryMarigold · 02/10/2021 18:20

I think his family are victims too. I'm some ways it's worth than death to know sometime you trusted and loved could do that. And he's not even dead. You can't grieve like when someone has died even a death which was out if the blue (this is bad enough). You wouldn't know where to even start with grieving this. And it will be with them forever too. The kids have had their Dad torn away from them (quite rightly but that's what it'll feel like for them) and know he is a part of them. Their mental suffering will be huge and my heart goes out to them.

Kanaloa · 02/10/2021 18:29

But the victim isn’t front and centre here. If I wanted to keep Sarah Everard’s name at the centre of discussion I wouldn’t start a speculative thread about the wife and children of her murderer but then asterisk out parts of his name.

Kanaloa · 02/10/2021 18:29

And the same discussion point could have been achieved without even mentioning him, just by starting a thread about vigilantism/the family of criminals and support systems for them.

Heyyouwhatsthatsoundo · 02/10/2021 18:33

They’ll be run out the town they live in because people are idiots and have to start a new life with zero support.

Innovationstandard · 02/10/2021 18:50

I don't think it's unreasonable to start a thread or discuss what happens to that awful man's family. His poor poor wife and kids oh and his parents, siblings too if he has any? Imagine how you would feel?

WoodchipNightmares · 02/10/2021 18:51

I only hope that, when she initiates divorce proceedings, the judge gives her all the marital assets.

He's never getting out of prison; he doesn't need half of the house.

Lex345 · 02/10/2021 19:01

I feel incredibly sorry for his wife and children. Not only because of the shock as he showed no signs to them of this (and psychopaths are very well able to switch personality traits) but because he indirectly involved them in his crimes by taking them to the scene of it.

Appalling what he did to Sarah, but also appalling what he has done to his wife and children. I hope they genuinely do get support, new identities and a fresh start.

jinxyminxy · 02/10/2021 19:19

Out of interest, why do you think the victims would need access to a separate legal advocate in a criminal case? Criminal cases are prosecuted and paid for by the Crown. I agree that the victims and families of the convicted should have access to emotional/psychological/practical support. I can't see why they would need additional legal representation though.

Bunnycat101 · 02/10/2021 19:29

His family are victims in this too. The shock of what he was capable of etc must have been awful. I hope they can rebuild their lives but I suspect they will live with the horror that he took the children to the site of her body. By doing that he indirectly involved them. I suspect he probably wasn’t a particularly nice man to live with even if her sister thought he was nice .
