do families of notorious and vile pieces of filth receive protection, new identities etc or are they left to fend for themselves?

OP posts:

Why would she move to the Ukraine? Her DC were born here, go to school here etc.

KittenKong · 02/10/2021 12:40

She might have wanted to be around her family (and away from him and potentially the in-laws). Her sister had said that she didn’t plan on leaving.

Joystir59 · 02/10/2021 12:41

Peter Sutcliffe's wife carried on living in their home for years after he was locked up, could still be there in fact. She taught at my nephew's primary school

Hazel444 · 02/10/2021 12:42

@HalzTangz

I would imagine she will return to the country she was born in, it would certainly be safer for her to return home where I imagine coverage of the murder isn't a huge as it is here in the UK
It's not all that simple though, she has a good career here and has been here since 2006, her children have grown up here and are in the school system. That evil man has ruined so many lives. I hope his family are allowed to live in peace whatever they decide to do.
Dollywilde · 02/10/2021 12:44

My uncle is a relatively well known murderer and is in prison and likely will be for the rest of his life. I don’t have the same surname as him and it’s a relatively common name anyway so I don’t think anyone would link us.

It came completely out of the blue and we have had no contact with him at all since the conviction, but it’s been the hardest thing our family has ever gone through, in particular for my parent who is their sibling. I don’t expect any sort of sympathy, especially when the family of his victim have been through so much more, but I remember reading comments about the case at the time saying the family ‘must have known’. That was really hard, his victim didn’t know he was a dangerous man, neither did we. That’s how he managed it. Coming to terms with a close family member being capable of something so monstrous is very, very hard.

KeflavikAirport · 02/10/2021 12:45

IIRC she was from Eastern Europe. Maybe moving back to be closer to her parents would be an option.

CaveMum · 02/10/2021 13:05

@actingsergeant

‘censoring’ his name is pointless and ridiculous. We all know his name, not typing it in full doesn’t undo what he’s done ffs 🙄
No but what it does is deny him some publicity. People like him often get off on their own notoriety, so let’s deny him that in our own small way.
Kanaloa · 02/10/2021 13:22

How does it work to deny him publicity though? The thread is still clearly about him and his name, although censored, is still there. The whole thread is speculating about his family. The only way to deny him publicity would he not to talk about him at all.

Anyway, I don’t think it’s as surprising as others that some families of murderers and criminals don’t move countries etc. It’s not easy to move across the world even when you’re on your best form, never mind when everything is going awfully. It’s a shame there isn’t more support both for families of victims and families of criminals.

FuckingFabulous · 02/10/2021 13:39

I know someone who had to move, change their little kid's schools and surname and get a different car and everything when their ex partner was arrested for sex offences. Their EX!! They were being targeted, called all sorts, saying they must have covered up for him etc. So for the wife and children of a murdering rapist that everyone knows... I can imagine it's a case of new area, clean slate and crossed fingers for years to come

funinthesun19 · 02/10/2021 13:52

I feel so sorry for his wife and children.

They are not guilty by association and people need to remember that and leave them alone. But some lovely members of society won’t see it that way and will think they’re doing a good thing by harassing his family. Hmm I hope anyone who harasses them gets locked up too.

I hope they’re being taken care of.

JustLyra · 02/10/2021 14:14

The wives/partners of people charged going to court doesn't automatically show support.

I worked with a woman whose husband was charged with child abuse, in particular making and distributing pornography showing child abuse and rape. She was given no details until the court case. All she knew was that the police charged him with various things and he was denying them.

She was obviously extremely suspicious of her husband because he was held on remand, but it was only in court that she realised how predatory and horrific he was, and that some of the abuse had happened in a property they owned jointly. She had two very, very young children and had no contact with social services (they said if she had started taking the children to visit him they'd have got involved) and as the children got older and needed support she's had no help whatsoever. She didn't even get financial help with legal costs when he tried to stop her changing the children's surname to hers.

‘Deny him publicity’? He’s not Gemma bloody Collins. It’s a major murder case, across the headline news and front pages. The asterisks just felt like a (rather naff) attempt to make a point.

Tellmesomethinggirl · 02/10/2021 14:21

I thought it was horribly irresponsible of some newspapers to publish his wife's photo on-line. I hope she can go back to the country where she was born and disappear. Those poor children.

TakeMe2Insanity · 02/10/2021 14:31

@Rosehip10

This!

I don’t get why she’d move to an area with a lot of instability.

Tellmesomethinggirl · 02/10/2021 14:33

Why would she move to the Ukraine?

Because the British press will never, ever, leave her or her DC alone.

lljkk · 02/10/2021 14:44

A lot of men and women (such women abound on MN) are very controlling characters. But few plot much less perpetuate evil deeds.

Ukraine is a basketcase country, I wouldn't want to live there or raise kids there, esp. kids who never lived there.

Lots of MNers post threads about hugely surprising stuff they discovered their partners have done. Do MNers want to start labeling those OP with "must have known", now?

RudestLittleMadam · 02/10/2021 14:45

So maybe there were warning signs (red flags as we say on MN) but she closed her eyes to them?

Or… she didn’t recognise them as red flags? Or she wasn’t ready to delve too deeply in a newspaper interview about those things? Whatever the correct theory, she is in no way to blame. Even if there were warning signs in their relationship that won’t have saved Sarah. Who was his wife going to go to warn about these warning signs? The police?! Hmm

This woman and her children should be left alone to repair their lives and move on the best they can. They are victims too. Not in the same way as Sarah and by the extension her family, but they have/are suffering.

LukeEvansWife · 02/10/2021 14:57

I feel sorry for the children.

People will assume that the wife knew about her husband. It seems fairly naive to have known absolutely nothing but who knows?

MurielSpriggs · 02/10/2021 15:03

@SandysMam

What happens to his assets in these cases? So if the wife divorces him, does he get half the house etc?
No moral judgment would be made about him in splitting the assets. The practicalities might come into play as they would for anyone who now has no income with which to support his ex-wife, and is being accommodated for free so has less need for assets of his own.
EvilPea · 02/10/2021 15:03

I think of his wife often. I hope she’s doing ok. I hope his kids are as well.

More innocent victims dragged into his sick world

@Tailendofsummer

Colin Pitchfork murdered one of his two teenage victims while his baby son slept in the car. I wonder how he coped with this knowledge growing up. So unfair. He (the murderer) has also just been released from prison, early 60s, with a history of raping and murdering teenagers. I wonder what could possibly go wrong.
@tailendofsummer

His son was in the year above me at school. He wasnt in my circle but some of my friends were friends with him. He looks so much like CP it's so unfortunate for him. He had a bit of a hard time at school from what I remember but he was actually a really sweet (& very camp) guy. His surname was changed and someone told me he didn't know what his father did until he was in his teens (can't verify this though).

Again, even if his wife did know he was pure fucking evil what could she have done about it? How is she responsible? Yeah, she could have left him if she knew, and all power to her if she had left him. But would he have still murdered Sarah or someone else? Probably. Because he is evil and the police force he worked for (and the police in general) are rotten from the inside out. His colleagues nicknamed him “the rapist” ffs.

I think it's meant more as a mark of respect for Sarah Everard. To keep her name not his on people's lips and in their minds.

You might see it as a bit wanky but someone trying to do the right thing isn't the end of the world.

It also stops people from finding the thread by searching his name.
