'My Husband'

MudyTrudy · 01/10/2021 14:39

I have a long standing, very close group of girlfriends (6 of us altogether). We know each other's husbands/boyfriends/partners /children/parents very well.

The six of us were together a few days ago and one of the group kept referring to her husband as 'my husband' in any sentence that involved his name. It stood out as we just normally say our husband's names. We all know who he is, very well. Then she started doing it with 'my daughter' and she is my godchild?!

It drove me nuts, particularly the husband referring as his name is in most sentences she's says anyway. In the end I said 'who, you mean Clive, we know who he is!'

AIBU?

She can refer to him however she wants - I can’t see how it would rile you so much you need to start a thread about it 🤷🏻‍♀️

GiraffeClimber · 01/10/2021 14:45

Up to her what she does but definitely weird.

hellcatspangle · 01/10/2021 14:46

Does she think one of you fancies him?

Killthewinewitchnow · 01/10/2021 14:46

I think it’s more odd that it’s irritated you so much 🤷‍♀️

frogswimming · 01/10/2021 14:47

It's probably because she often talks to people who don't know her family, like work colleagues. She's got into the habit of referring to her husband and children without their names for people who don't know them.

LeaveYourHatOn · 01/10/2021 14:48

No, YANBU because it's odd!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 01/10/2021 14:48

I don’t think it’s a big deal myself!

PlanDeRaccordement · 01/10/2021 14:48

So? Failing to see the problem.

LaBellina · 01/10/2021 14:49

It’s a bit odd but wouldn’t bother me.
I would probably secretly laugh about it though.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 01/10/2021 14:49

Sometimes Ds talks about dd to me and says “my sister”. I say “do you mean (dd’s name)?” and he laughs, but he’s obviously just doing it because he’s used to saying that at school.

I probably shouldn’t pick him up tbh but it makes me laugh!

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 01/10/2021 14:49

It's really easily done, OP. I have been known to talk to my brothers about 'my mother' when we all share the same one. It's because I've mentioned whatever it is, to somebody else who doesn't know her.

There are some really nit-picky posts here at the moment.

IveGotASongThatllGetOnYNerves · 01/10/2021 14:50

What did she say when you gave that reply?

Ohsugarhoneyicetea · 01/10/2021 14:50

Maybe she has menopausal brain fog and cant remember their names

RaisedByPangolins · 01/10/2021 14:51

My DP does this when talking about his brothers - it’s always “I was talking to my brother Dave today” If he knew loads of Daves it would make sense, but he and I both only know this one! And when I talk about my brother and say “I saw Geoff today” he’ll reply “who? Of your brother Geoff”. It’s almost like he can’t picture them without the qualifier of their relationship as a brother! Weird indeed. I have picked him up on it and laughed about it. He also takes the piss for the way I stress the wrong syllable in ice cream or Love Island for example. We all have our strange ways!

GreatPotato · 01/10/2021 14:51

More annoying is when people do use their husband's/child's name in conversation and expect you to know who they're taking about Grin

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 01/10/2021 14:52

I don’t think this would bother me. I think this may be a regional thing.

RaisedByPangolins · 01/10/2021 14:52

“Oh your brother Geoff” that should be

MolyHolyGuacamole · 01/10/2021 14:52

I used to have this joke with my mum when she said 'my husband' when she was referring to my dad 😂 I said it in a voice like Khloe Kardashian every time because when she was married to Lamar Odom she always said 'myyyyyyyy husbaaaaaand' in a long drawn out dramatic tone, like she couldn't believe she had a husband and just had to keep reminding everyone.

I get it, it's odd

scarpa · 01/10/2021 14:54

Yeah, that's odd if you all definitely knew who it was!

Sometimes I'd do it if there was someone newer in the group I wouldn't expect to how my husband/sister/whoever's name. But this is a bit weird!

Siquijor · 01/10/2021 14:54

@hellcatspangle

Does she think one of you fancies him?
Absolutely not 🤪
Siquijor · 01/10/2021 14:55

@IveGotASongThatllGetOnYNerves

What did she say when you gave that reply?
She sort of giggled and said 'yes, I mean Clive'
Asleanna · 01/10/2021 14:57

I don't think it really matters to be honest! He is her husband isn't he? Or are they not married?

Asleanna · 01/10/2021 14:57

Think you've had a name change fail Op!

purpledagger · 01/10/2021 14:58

I don't mind that, I get more annoyed when people start using names like you know who they are talking about.

I used to work with someone who used to talk about various family members and used names, but never said who any of them were.

ModerateOven · 01/10/2021 15:00

It's probably because she often talks to people who don't know her family, like work colleagues

I think it's probably this. I've done it myself a few times and have noticed others do it too. My neighbour often refers to "my son" who I know perfectly well, since he was a baby. .neighbour works with a lot of customers all day so easily done.
